Carson City area pubs collect dozens of birds in annual 'Battle of the Bars Turkey Drive'
Submitted by editor on Tue, 11/24/2015 - 1:29pmThe Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving food baskets will benefit from the third annual Battle of the Bars Turkey Drive. Carson City area bars and taverns have been collecting turkeys since October. On Saturday, Lt. Mark Cyr took several soldiers and volunteers from The Salvation Army out “bar hopping” collecting turkeys to help out needy families.

Sign up this afternoon at St. Teresa school. Living the Good Life is a good go-to for Tuesday night fun with bar games and trivia. Pizza lovers should head to Brugo’s for their weekly beer specials and a special tasting with High Sierra Brewery.

Monday, Nov. 23: Things to do in Carson City

There are still many organizations collecting food for families, so consider dropping off a frozen turkey at Salvation Army, or something non-perishable in one of the many bins around town. If helping kids is a passion, you’ll want to attend the informational meeting at the office of the Court Appointed Special Advocates this evening. CASA is always looking for people who’d like to make a difference to a child.

Submitted by Danielle Cook on Fri, 11/20/2015 - 8:35pmThe countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

Check here for ticket information; you may get lucky. Take the kids to the Carson City Library for weekly story time and check out CCAI’s Industrial Art Exhibit while you’re there. Today is the last day it will be on display. Hear stories of Old Virginia City at the Gold Hill Hotel. Or take a trip to the Nevada State Museum: the bombing of a Basque village during the Spanish Civil War and the affect it had on the United States is the topic of this month’s Francis Humphry lecture.

If you have a book-lover on your list, a book signed by local author Ken Beaton is easy to acquire. Browser’s Corner is holding a meet and greet with him this evening.

A winter wonderland isn’t always easy to drive in, so please slow down and be careful. Monday always brings karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, so go sing your heart out. Football lovers will probably be watching the Bears-Chargers game. For those of you with swing in your step, head to El Charro Avita for intermediate dance lessons and the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly ‘night out.’

Red’s Old 395 is the place to be if you want to catch Carson City’s Classic Cinema Club’s showing of Royal Wedding with Fred Astaire. Living the Good Life starts up a weekly trivia and bar games night this evening, and their menu is chock-full of yummy options. Country Line Dance at Carson Lanes or beginning swing dance at El Charro’s are for those who want to kick up their heels.

We enjoyed a perfect Nevada Day weekend: not too cold or hot, and the wind didn’t pick up until long after the floats left the parade route. Halloween was enjoyed by all with trick or treating at the Governor’s Mansion, the annual Blinky Man Halloween ride, the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Brewery Arts Center, and costumes galore. It’s time to move into November, though. Daylight savings time has ended and there is talk of snow.

Sushi lovers should head to Kim Lee’s Sushi for two for one beer and sake; just save some upside down shrimp for me.

Just a reminder, Carson City trick-or-treats on Friday, Oct. 30 this year. For our newer residents, this follows the Carson City custom of not having treat night the same day as the parade. The last time this happened was in 2009. Don’t get tricked, you’ll see the little ones a day early. If you need a pumpkin, check out the pumpkin patch at Red Horse Ranch on Cochise, just south of Clearview Dr.

Autumn in Northern Nevada follows no rules when it comes to temperature, so enjoy it while you can, because it can, and does, change on a dime. A great way to start your week is by enjoying something beautiful, and luckily Carson City offers a good handful of art exhibits to appreciate. If you missed Industrial Art at the Courthouse, wander over to its new home in the Carson City Library. Today also kicks-off a week-long celebration at the Carson Cigar Company in honor of their 20th Anniversary. Enjoy live music with ‘Cheese the Knife’ featuring Ev Mussleman of the Trippin King Snakes. If you prefer to do the singing yourself, Firkin and Fox is where you’ll find karaoke.

Get your blood pumping with Carson City’s Parks and Rec. Department on this morning’s Easy Walk at Silver Saddle Ranch. Go dancing tonight and take your pick of line dancing at Carson Lanes or beginning swing dance at El Charro’s. Classic movie buffs won’t want to miss out on a showing of the original Little Shop of Horrors at Red’s Old 395.
