Carson Lanes had undergone a major renovation and expansion of its Synder Avenue facility and wants all of Carson City to know about it.
That's why it will celebrate with a huge weekend open house, complete with contests, kids carnival, dance demonstrations, games, live music, a dunk tank and $2,000 in free prize giveaways.
The fun begins Saturday, Aug. 7 with bowling and happy hour deals and random gift card drawings throughout the day. A ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 11 a.m.
The classic rock band Band Intent will play from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Where does the Nugget Project stand now?

After yesterday's revelation that Gov. Jim Gibbons' office doesn't like the numbers they are seeing about the Nugget Project, what's next?

What the letter from Gibbons' Deputy Chief of Staff Lynn Hettrick was responding to was a newly completed study from Meridian Business Advisors that looked specifically at the feasibility of moving three state agencies to the new Carson City Center Project, AKA Nugget Project.

The first run of Engine 18 in Carson City to run on V&T rails

Check out some of these great photographs of Locomotive #18 posted by Scott Schrantz at aroundcarson.com. The engine, bought in 2005 by the Nevada Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway, was in service on Saturday.

Kenny & Me

There are about a million people who know Kenny Guinn better than I do.

But it's that fact that makes the interactions I had with him so interesting.

As a political columnist, I took my fair share of shots at him, on issues like Yucca Mountain and his big tax rebate program. Besides sending his nuke dump point man out to counter my criticisms, he never held those against me.

In search of clarity for Curry Street Promenade, Part 1

If you have taken part in the events going on in downtown Carson City this summer — such as the Friday night concerts on 3rd Street or the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings — then you have witnessed the Curry Street Promenade in action.

Though most would agree that the events are a great benefit for our downtown, the process by which this project came about is a strange one, tainted with managerial missteps, missing budgets and political indifference.

Silver Dollar Cruise Night

Thursday night the Carson Mall was filled with people, cars, good food and rock & roll music for the Silver Dollar Cruise Night. It was a blast. The event ran from 6 pm to 8 pm. There was no fee for spectators. If you weren’t able to make it out to Thursday night’s event, there will be two other Silver Dollar Cruise Nights before the Annual Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic, July 22 at the Carson Mall & July 29 at the Plaza Hotel & Conference Center both from 6 pm to 8 pm. The Annual Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic will be from July 30th through Aug. 1st.

Carson City School District president 'amazed' marijuana charge dropped against principal

At least one Carson City School District official is troubled by the outcome of Friday's misdemeanor driving under the influence guilty plea by Carson Middle School Principal Sam Santillo.
School board trustee president Norm Scoggin said he's "amazed" that a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana was dropped by the Washoe County District Attorney's Office.

The 45-year-old principal failed field sobriety tests and his blood alcohol level was .136, according to the report. With the misdemeanor plea he will pay a fine of $500 and perform 48 hours of community service.

Coming up Monday: A peek inside Carson City's redevelopment machine

The Carson City Board of Supervisors yesterday suspended the redevelopment incentive loans for small downtown businesses, putting an end (at least for now) to the oft-criticized program.

Instead, the supervisors wish to focus more on infrastructure, and possibly on bigger projects (hello Carson City Center AKA Nugget Project). And this change doesn't effect funds used for special events, like the Curry Street Promenade or Nevada Day.
