Carson City Manager Larry Werner announces resignation, retirement

Carson City Manager Larry Werner will retire effective Dec. 19, city officials announced Tuesday. Werner has served in the role of city manager since February 2008.

“For me, this has been a wonderful experience and I would not have traded it for anything,” said Werner in a letter to the Carson City Board of Supervisors. “Although I do feel some regret in making this decision at this time, I have no concerns about the management of the City because you have the best staff, department directors and elected officials that I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with.”

Carson City Harvest Club to receive grant to produce locally grown food for local families

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.

Grant awards amounting to $250,730 will go to 13 programs throughout Northern Nevada for crop research, education marketing and production.

It seems like a rare opportunity these days to be able to cast a vote in an election and feel good about your selection. Most of the time I wind up voting against the other person as a choice between the lesser of two evils. As a result, I believe most Americans are unhappy at one time or another about some facet of their government, whether local, state or national.

Weather system to bring rain to Carson City, snow in the Sierra by Wednesday

The fall weather cool-down continues this week with another system moving into the Carson City region by Wednesday. The system will drop temperatures by 15 to 20 degrees with rain in Carson City and snow in the forecast for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service.

An area of low pressure will bring rain, snow and a significant cool down for Wednesday with high temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal. Tuesday will bring mostly cloudy skies to Carson City.

Northern Nevada Fire Wives to hold Saturday barbecue in Carson City

Northern Nevada Fire Wives, an organization comprised of firefighters' families in the community, will hold a barbecue this Saturday in Carson City.

The Northern Nevada Fire Wives BBQ is Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11-2pm at Carson City Fire Station 51 at 777 South Stewart Street in Carson City. The barbecue costs $5; raffle tickets are $1 each.

The barbecue will have a bounce house, face painting and other family-friendly activities, including a visit by Smokey Bear. All proceeds benefit the Northern Nevada Fire Wives organization.

Hire the Carson High Choir to be Your Holiday Entertainment

As a fundraiser, the Carson High School Choral Group in Carson City will be available as entertainment for holiday parties. The group will perform selections of Christmas and Hanukkah music.

The funds that are collected will help the students be able to travel to competitions and provide scholarships to students in the program.

Carson City woman admits to falsifying documents to steal sister's student loan check

A Carson City woman was arrested and faces a felony fraud charge after confessing to stealing her sister's Sally Mae student loan money after the two had gotten into an argument.

Mariena Acosta, 28, was booked into Carson City Jail on Oct. 4. She told authorities that she altered documents in order for a $2,326 check meant for her sister to go into a separate bank account. After the check was deposited, she went ahead and spent the money.

Special steam train event planned for Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will offer a special run of the famous V&T Steam Locomotive No. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 and 13. Normally operated only on summer holiday weekends and for Santa Train, the historic and picturesque locomotive will pull the train, giving visitors a rare opportunity to ride the rails and photograph the equipment in fall splendor.

Four Carson City area men arrested in alleged attack

Sparks Police Department arrested four Carson City-Minden area men Saturday night after they allegedly attacked a man who was trying to protect a female friend from what police described as “inappropriate conduct.”

Carson City road construction and maintenance report

Here is the Carson City road report for the week of Oct. 7-13: On Monday, Oct. 7 and Tuesday, Oct. 8, Proctor Street will be closed between Carson Street and Curry Street due to utility work.

The outside northbound lane on Roop Street will be closed near the intersection with Corbett Street during daytime hours beginning Tuesday, Oct. 8 through Thursday, Oct. 10.

There will be utility work on Minnesota Street between Sophia Street and Ann Street, but no lane closures are expected.

High School Football: Carson capitalizes to win over Damonte Ranch

For three quarters Friday night at Carson High, everything was normal. Two evenly matched Sierra League football teams had played a respectable, if slightly mundane, game, with the Senators finally pulling ahead thanks to two mistakes in the Damonte Ranch kicking game.
But there were no fireworks on the field to match those set off at halftime during Carson’s homecoming celebration.

Yearling bear cub caught by game warden after lurking along Carson City streets

A 200-pound female yearling bear decided to explore the streets of Carson City on Friday night, climbing over fences, going through backyards and finally climbing up a tree before being tranquilized by a Nevada Department of Wildlife game warden.

The hungry bear cub was even chased by a couple of cows when she lumbered through Lompa Ranch field, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Deputies and two mounted officers on horses had been pursuing the bear since early Friday evening attempting to coax her west toward the foothills.

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College’s Tech Prep Consortium has been recognized nationally for its Career Pathways program.

The National Association for Career Pathways Leadership selected WNC for the 2013 Rigorous Programs of Study National Award for exceeding what other states offer students in career and technical programs.
