BLM seeking input regarding mill at American Flat

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District-Sierra Front Field Office is seeking public input through provisions in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act on a proposal to reduce site safety hazards at the United Comstock Merger Mill at American Flat (AFM) in Storey County, Nevada.

The BLM requests public input on the identification of historic properties and comments on potential effects analyzed in the environmental assessment to the AFM complex relative to regulation 36 CFR Part 800.2(d) and 800.3(e).

CARSON CITY, NV – January 7, 2011 – Over twelve million children go hungry in America every day, thousands right here in the State of Nevada. In an effort to contribute to feeding the hungry children in our community, Anytime Fitness of Carson City will donate $10 for each new membership this month to Food for Thought, a local non-profit organization that provides weekend meals to over 800 children in our community. Many of our children only receive the food they need during the school week.

NV Energy to drop electric rates for Northern Nevada customers by 1.8 percent

Good news for Carson City NV Energy customers. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has approved an overall decrease in electric rates for NV Energy’s Northern Nevada electric customers effective Saturday, Jan. 1.

For the typical residential customer using 745 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, it means a decrease of approximately 1.8 percent or $1.57 per month from $87.97 to $86.40.

At least 24 million people in the U.S. struggle with addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The good news is that millions in recovery stand as evidence that there is hope – people can stop using, reconnect with family, and go on to productive, happy lives. The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is one group promoting the fact that recovery is possible, prevention works and treatment is effective.

Midget football Snow Bowl fundraiser

The Carson City Pop Warner Jr. Midget Team recently won the 2010 Snow Bowl and are going on to regionals in Santa Clara, CA Thanksgiving Weekend and then possible on to the national level. The team is currently trying to raise fund to be able to travel to compete at the higher levels. Group Urges Nevadans to Reach Out for Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment

Christy McGill likes to use a gardening metaphor when she explains Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey's mission to reduce substance abuse and promote recovery.

“The Coalition is planting the seeds of hope that alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention works, treatment is effective, and people do recover,” said McGill, who serves as director.

BLM Christmas tree permits available beginning Nov. 8

Christmas tree cutting permits in select areas of Northern Nevada public lands will be available beginning Monday, Nov. 8, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office announced Thursday.

The agency allows Christmas tree sales to thin small trees in overstocked areas. Organizations and individuals are permitted to harvest trees for resale.

Lands bill contains money for Kings Canyon, Carson River Canyon property

The Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.
