Partnership Carson City offers 5-week series in May to promote mental well being

Partnership Carson City has launched “Rediscovering Your Mental Health Series,” a five-week program aimed at promoting mental wellness during Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Each week, participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to enhance their mental well-being and foster a healthy community.

This series, running weekly throughout May, features a diverse lineup of speakers and workshops covering a range of topics relevant to mental health. From mindfulness and meditation to suicide prevention and healthy living, each session offers valuable insights and practical tools for participants to incorporate into their daily lives.

The series takes place at Partnership Carson City at 1925 N Carson St, Carson City, with a maximum capacity of 25 participants per session. An RSVP is required to secure a spot in each class.

May 8: Kadie Zeller - Mindfulness and Meditation
May 15: Office of Suicide Prevention - Suicide Prevention 101
May 22: Linda Lang - Mindful Life Skills incorporating basic sewing skills

Carson City area road report for week of May 6-12

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 6-12, 2024. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— 2nd Street between Carson Street and Curry Street will be closed to westbound traffic now to June 30, 2025 for construction.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road/utility work:
— 5th Street between Carson Street and Plaza Street will have narrow lanes on Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm.

— Carson Street between 5th Street and Musser Street will have flagger control for trucks entering the northbound travel lanes from Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. Use caution.

— Winnie Lane near Division Street will have the eastbound lane and shoulder closed on Monday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, for asphalt patching.

Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 Donates $2000 to Holiday with a Hero

Organized by Carol Park, the Elks held an open to the public, two-day indoor garage sale at the lodge in March as a fundraiser for Holiday with a Hero. Lodge members donated all items sold and assisted at the event which received excellent support from the community.

Holiday with a Hero is a partnership between the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Carson City Fire Department and the Carson City School District to help underprivileged children in Carson City have a proper Christmas.

The program pairs first responders and other community volunteers with students in need for an annual Christmas shopping experience.

Many students who qualify live in cars, campgrounds, motels of double up with other families. Founded in 2004, the program has provided more than $325,000 worth of service to local children. 2024 marks the 20th consecutive year of the event.

There are still spots open for the third annual golf scramble scholarship fundraiser happening May 18. The Holiday with a Hero team is hosting the golf tournament as the primary fundraiser for its scholarship program that began in 2022. All proceeds from this event will benefit students in the Carson City School District.

Carson City teen arrested at diner after taking used car for a 'test drive' from dealership two days prior

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested at a local diner after allegedly stealing a car from a used car lot two days prior to test drive it.

According to the arrest report, Seth James Warner was arrested after deputies were dispatched to a used car dealership on report of a stolen vehicle.

Warner had been allowed to test drive a vehicle two days prior and had never returned. The owner of the dealership told deputies he’d sent Warner multiple text messages telling him to return the vehicle. Warner had texted back stating he could not return the vehicle because he was sick and in the hospital.

However, Warner’s stepfather told the owner that both Warner and the vehicle were at Denny’s in North Carson.

Deputies located the vehicle and Warner at the Denny’s and Warner agreed to speak with them. He told them he felt like he was going to have a seizure and that his right ribs were hurting.

He told deputies after he’d taken the vehicle for a test drive, he'd driven home and when he got out of the vehicle, he fell on the ground and had a seizure. He said his girlfriend drove him to the hospital where he remained for two days. He said he did not remember being in the hospital, and when he got out of the hospital he drove to Denny’s to get something to eat. He said he was just about to eat when deputies arrived and detained him.

Deputies took Warner into custody for grand larceny of a motor vehicle, a felony, possession of a stolen vehicle, and they learned he also had a warrant out of Douglas County issued April 11 for his arrest.

Bail: $13,500; $1,000 cash only

Carson City Symphony's Recorder and String Ensembles Present ‘Pleasures of Music’ Concert

The Carson City Symphony Association will present a concert, "Pleasures of Music," on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 N. Hwy. 395, south of Best Buy, Carson City. The concert is a Mark Twain Days event. Admission is free, donations welcome,

Consort Canzona, an early music ensemble featuring soprano, alto, tenor, and bass recorders, will perform the first part of the program. They will play old favorites, madrigals, dances, and more. Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR), an adult intermediate string ensemble conducted by Micah Dunn, will play classical and traditional selections. The two groups will combine for the final piece.

This concert is a tribute to the memory of Jane Johnson, who was long associated with the Carson City Symphony. She was a member of the Carson Chamber Singers beginning in 1986, played cello with the Symphony starting in 2001, and was a founding member of Consort Canzona.

Carson City Symphony Association's 2023-24 concerts and educational activities are supported with public funding through the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Carson City Cultural Commission, and by private donations. A Living History Presentation, 'The Reno Cure' happening at Valhalla Tahoe

Friday May 10 at 7:30PM, Valhalla Tahoe kicks off their season with a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure,” at the Boathouse Theater. Reno has long been known as “The Biggest Little City.”

But it wasn’t just the introduction of legalized gambling in 1931 that brought the town its fame. For the first half of the 20th century, hundreds of thousands of people came to the Truckee River town, to get a “quickie” dissolution to their marriage. Local historians David & Gayle Woodruff assume the Reno Divorce Ranch characters of Clive and Vivian Sterling, as they recount the unique, interesting, and often amusing history of the Reno Divorce Industry.

Carson City Rotarians to learn about the success of the club’s Educational Grant

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

Witter will update the members at their meeting on Tuesday, May 8th, at noon in the Brewery Art Center’s Grand Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.

The grant helped purchase a set of historical fiction and non-fiction novels for each school within the district with students in 3rd through 8th grades. “Students can develop a love of learning by engaging in literature that is interesting and exciting,” She said. “At the same time, they are also learning about important events in history that shape our lives today.”

This year, 8th grade teachers utilized "Fault Lines in the Constitution" during their US Constitution Unit. 2nd grade utilized "Grace For President” to teach students about the election process and qualities of candidates. Witter says that teachers are excited and eager to introduce these books and additional ones. “They look forward to exposing their students to engaging literature, which is different from the heavy quantities of informational text students are often exposed to.”

WNC, Office of Workforce Innovation hosts ceremony recognizing students’ workforce training success

Western Nevada College hosted a ceremony to celebrate students succeeding in training to reestablish themselves in the workforce on Thursday.

Presented by the Nevada Office of Workforce Innovation (OWINN), 25 students were recognized during the Workforce Success Ceremony in Joe Dini Library.

The Supporting and Advancing Nevada’s Dislocated Individuals (SANDI) grant covers students’ costs for tuition fees and course materials for training and certifications in industry-focused sectors that can be completed in 15 weeks or less. Project SANDI strives to modernize the workforce system, translating skills and experience into credentials and credit-bearing programs to assist dislocated and underemployed workers who lack academic credentials.

Student training is focused in healthcare, computer information technology, automotive mechanics, machining, welding, truck driving and advanced manufacturing. Most of these programs are offered through WNC’s Workforce, Career and Technical Education division and further supported by Western’s Realizing Opportunities for the American Dream to Succeed program and ACCEL College and Career Readiness Program.

WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, WNC Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs Dr. Dana Ryan provided welcoming and closing remarks, respectively. OWINN Executive Director Scott Hammond and SANDI Project Manager Tony Villalobos also participated in the ceremony.

“Programs that support students, like Project Sandi, provide pivotal training to dislocated and underemployed workers in our state. We are grateful that we have the programs and accelerated training that can facilitate their return to the workforce, and we are pleased to recognize students who have completed their programs of study,” President Dalpe said.

Carson City's Catmandu introduces their Cat of the Week: Cher

Perfection in a fur coat is the best way to describe Cher, our cat of the week. Just 7 months old, she is a pretty little short-haired girl with a sweet and social personality.

Her lovely white and black coat is soft and pleasing to pet. Her big green eyes will melt your heart. Cher is an outgoing girl who will talk to you. She will tell you when it’s dinner time, bed time, and time to cuddle.

Still a youngster, Cher loves to play. Spiral-springing cat toys are her favorite thing in the whole world. She was raised around other cats and kittens and gets along well with other cats that are nice to her. She would love to have another young cat as a playmate, but has never been around dogs or small children. She would do best with children that are school age or older.

Cher started harness training in her foster home and was doing quite well with getting used to wearing it. She had not progressed to walking on a leash yet, but could probably learn to go on walks if someone took the time to work with her. Cher is spayed and up-to-date on her core vaccines.

Carson High School's Senior in the Spotlight this week is Parker Schmid, a remarkable young man whose sparkle radiates in every aspect of his life. From academics to extracurriculars, Parker's journey embodies excellence and compassion, traits that set him apart from his peers.

Academically, Parker boasts a remarkable 4.37 weighted GPA, securing a spot in the top 10% of his competitive class. With the successful completion of four AP tests and pursuit of an AP Capstone Diploma, Parker demonstrates not only his academic prowess but also his dedication to learning and growth.

Beyond the classroom, Parker is a shining star in Carson High School's Choir and Theater programs. His passion for the performing arts extends beyond school walls, as evidenced by his completion of several community college theater credits with Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada College. Parker's involvement in theater not only showcases his talent but also highlights his leadership qualities and commitment to artistic expression.

One can't help but notice Parker's kindness and empathy, qualities that set him apart in both his academic and extracurricular pursuits. During his role of Tin Man in YTCC’s Wizard of Oz production, Parker not only showcased his talent but also his remarkable character. He welcomed younger actors with open arms, offering support and guidance to ensure their growth within the production.

Carson City, Storey, Lyon County Firefighters respond to Mound House blaze

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

A large smokestack can be seen in the East from Carson City.

UPDATE: Carson High School lockdown lifted following weapons investigation

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Two School Resource Officers are on scene investigating why the alarm went off.

At this time there is not believed to be any danger to students or staff.

Lyon County Commissioners hear update from NDOT on Highway 50

The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) on the current status of the Highway 50 Preservation Project in Dayton.

According to the presentation, NDOT’s project scope for East Dayton (between Fortune Drive and Chaves Road) includes the following preliminary project features:
· Signalized intersections at Cardelli Road/River Boat Road and Six Mile Canyon Road/Fort Churchill Road.
· Maintain 12’ travel lanes. No roadway widening or new travel lanes.
· Median installation at intersections for access control. Access controls will include high-T intersections, as appropriate.

NDOT also plans to reduce the posted speed limit to 55 MPH from east of Fortune Drive to east of Bryce Street/Chaves Road. The final design is anticipated to be completed in summer of 2025 and construction will begin in 2026. NDOT is looking ahead toward future long-term improvements, such as controlled access alternatives, frontage roads, and additional surface streets for local connections. A public information meeting will be held for the project design in the fall of 2024. The full presentation is available in the Agenda backup materials.

Clerk/Treasurer’s Office
The Lyon County Clerk/Treasurer provided a report on early voting and polling locations for the upcoming 2024 Primary Election.

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office honors Peace Officer Memorial Week and participated in the memorial run that concluded in Carson City on Thursday afternoon for the 27th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony.

Other Board Action Items
· Declared the month of May as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” in Lyon County.
· Approved an amendment to the Purchase Agreement for the Dayton Government Complex parcel in the Traditions area of Dayton to extend the time for closing and modify the provisions regarding site work and additional fill material for use by Lyon County.
· Commissioner Hendrix was approved to travel to Washington DC for the National Association of County Officials (NACo) County Leadership Institute June 9-13, 2024 for an estimated cost of $1,500.
· Approved cancelling the July 04, 2024 Board of County Commissioners meeting.
· Proposed an ordinance amending Lyon County Code Title 4, Chapter 14, Section 1, increasing fee from $3.00 to $6.00 per document on the recording of certain documents by the County Recorder with the proceeds used to provide legal services for abused and neglected children.

College for Kids: Skiing Is Believing Summer Sports Camp hosted by WNC begins July

Every day of every week, Skiing is Believing staff will help provide a variety of sports for kids to develop their physical skills and promote emotional development through exercise and community service.

Each week will include a combination of mountain biking, hiking, martial arts, community services & education, softball/baseball, archery, general fitness, flag football, inline skating and more! All sports are taught by sport-specific SIB staff and coaches. Kids in camp will go home tired after full days of truly enriching physical activity and social emotional learning. Douglas County’s five year Strategic Plan unveiled

After months of thorough community engagement and meticulous deliberation, Douglas County has announced the completion of its new Strategic Plan. This document, which will guide the County's decisions and resource allocation for the next five years, is the result of extensive input from both internal and external stakeholders.

The creation of the Strategic Plan involved multiple public workshops, focus groups, public meetings, and a successful community survey. The County received valuable feedback from residents and incorporated their priorities and concerns into the five-year planning document. This collaborative approach has resulted in a comprehensive strategic plan that reflects the needs and desires of the community.

"I want to thank our community, stakeholders, and County staff for their contributions, and especially the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners for its leadership and direction in shaping this strategic plan," said County Manager Jenifer Davidson. "Our residents made their voices heard, and I am excited that this final product reflects their vision as directed by the Board. I look forward to working with the Board to put this plan into action to make Douglas County an even better place to live, work, and play.”

The strategic plan identifies four key areas of focus for Douglas County: Balanced Growth & Infrastructure, Preserving Douglas County’s Natural Beauty and Rural Character, Serving Our Community with Quality County Services, and Enhancing Residents’ Quality of Life. Within these objectives, specific goals and draft initiatives have been outlined to guide the County's actions in each area.

This strategic plan is designed to evolve over time in response to the changing needs of both the organization and the community. It serves as a roadmap for county leadership to make informed decisions that will benefit all residents.

BACKGROUND

The Board of County Commissioners first approved a strategic plan to guide the direction of Douglas County in 2008. Since then, the plan has been updated from time to time as objectives and initiatives are modified and/or completed. The Fiscal Year 2018-2022 Strategic Plan adopted in 2017 can be viewed here.

Carson City area weather: Saturday to bring gusty winds, valley rain and Sierra snow

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 11 a.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday morning for the Lake Tahoe Basin, including Stateline, South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Tahoe City. The advisory also extends to Truckee to the north and Mammoth Lakes to the south.

The forecast calls for anywhere from 3 to 6 inches over higher Sierra passes, and up to 6 inches to a foot of snow across the Sierra Crest above 7,000 feet, plus winds with gusts as high as 55 mph in the mountains and gusts to 90 along the Sierra ridgetops.

Down in the valleys, the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch from Saturday morning through Saturday evening for Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon, Washoe and Storey counties. The weather service advises southwest winds will be anywhere from 25 mph to 35 mph with gusts anywhere from 50 mph to 60 mph. Forecasters also advise possible power outages are possible if winds really kick up.

According to the latest NWS area forecast discussion, there is a 40 to 60 percent probability for damaging winds from south of I-80 into Douglas, Lyon, Mineral and Mono counties. Blowing dust could be lofted by high winds near dry lake beds, creating reductions in visibility.

Winds will be followed closely by mountain snow showers and valley rains, although the Saturday night into Sunday timeframe will see snow levels crashing to 5,000 to 5,500 feet, forecasters said.

The best chances for snow accumulations will be above 7000 feet, during the overnight Saturday into Sunday hours. Higher end scenarios are indicating messy Sierra passes are possible before daybreak, with 8-10 inches possible along Donner Pass.

Forecasters note that the spring sun angle will work to compete with snow accumulations first thing Sunday morning, so accumulations on roadways should be short-lived.

Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton area
Friday will bring sunny skies and warm spring temperatures, with a high around 70. For Saturday, rain showers are likely, with highs near 60 and overnight lows near 30, which may give way to a chance of light snow, though little or no accumulation expected.

Forecasters note a chance of a hard freeze in colder valleys overnight Saturday into Sunday. Those with gardens and sprinkler systems should take note.

All told, most of the region will have at least a decent chance for wetting rains, with a 50-60 percent chance for at least 0.5 of an inch of liquid precipitation across the Tahoe Basin, forecasters said.

Carson High Culinary Arts & Early Childhood Education compete at state

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

FCCLA is a Career and Technical Organization that supports and enhances the curriculum in Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education. Events at the three-day conference included several workshops, exhibits and the skilled competitions. Students competed in Professional Presentation, Focus on Children, Job Interview, Baking and Pastry, Culinary Arts, Cupcake Decorating, Food Safety and Sanitation and Knife Skills.

Medals were awarded based on specific criteria. Silver medalist met more than 70% of criteria and Gold Medalist met 90% or more of the criteria. Additionally, there were two levels of events: Proficiency Events Program (PEP) events that focus on a few skills and Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events that encompassed many skill sets students work on during the course of their program.

Dangberg Historic Park kicks off 2024 summer festival with kites, concerts, talks and more

Family fun, lively bands and historical characters return to Dangberg Historic Park in Minden beginning in May. Favorite presenters, bands and Chautauquans will be joined by new ones as well.

A returning favorite event is the Kite Flying Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. both days. Cameron and Reina Kauffman of Coolkiter.com will bring their assortment of big and beautiful kites, kites for high wind, and kites for no wind.

The non-profit Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch will give free, small kites to children to decorate, while supplies last, and everyone is invited to bring their own kites. Children can also enjoy big bubble-making, as well.

Joining the event again this year is PBS Reno Kids Club on May 11 only, with additional activities planned for children. This event is free for everyone.

The 2024 Summer Festival will feature four concerts. The Sierra Sweethearts will kick off these concerts by performing a blend of bluegrass music spiced with humor. Also returning is Old West Trio. New this season will be Jakota Wass playing his own brand of country western music, and Moxy Ruckus will bring a Big Hair Eighties Review.

As we celebrate the 150th year of Chautauqua, new and favorite Chautauquans can be found throughout the Summer Festival performing national characters during this season's theme "Follow Us on an Adventure!" Junko Tabei, the first woman to climb Mount Everest, as performed by Bowen Lee; and Titanic survivor Violet Jessop, as performed by Kim Harris; are featured along with several others on select Wednesday evenings. Ticketed entry will apply.

On select Friday mornings, local heroes will make an appearance free to the public. These will include businessman and Comstock millionaire Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, as portrayed by David Woodruff; Nevada teacher and feminist Hannah Clapp, as portrayed by Cora Johnson; early woman miner in Alaska and Nevada Lillian Malcom, as portrayed by Guinevere Hobdy; and Comstock miner turned train robber Jack Davis, as portrayed by Ross Mortensen.

Both new and favorite speakers and authors return this season, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm. Mark McLaughlin will speak on Truckee's renaissance man Charles F. McGlashan, Dr. Michael Fischer will speak on America's most famous stagecoach ride, and David and Gayle Woodruff will speak on "Going for the Gold: the 1960 Winter Olympics."

New to the park this season will be historian Bob Stewart who will share "Backstories of Mark Twain's Friends," Tami Force who will speak on Nevada Ghost Towns, and Donna Inversin who will speak on the "Historic V&T Trail."

Local authors will share their popular work. Our first author, Gregory Crouch, will present his book The Bonanza King: John Mackay and the Battle over the Greatest Riches in the American West; Robert Max will share his Tahoe based murder mysteries No Forced Entry and When It's Personal; and Karen Dustman will speak on her third book in the series Forgotten Tales of Carson Valley and Nearby Settlements. Saturday speaker and author events are free for all.

Carson City commission posthumously awards Historic Preservation Award to Stan Jones

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The award dedicated to Jones, who died Dec. 28, 2023, and was presented to his wife, Sue, who accepted it along with their family.

The award was presented by Mike Drews, Historic Resource Commission Chairman.

“We lost another good preservationist last year in Carson City’s Stan Jones, and we’d like to award posthumously the historic preservation award to Sue for all of Stan’s work downtown,” Drews said. “It looks the way it does because Stan had an interest in historic preservation.”

"The contributions Stan made on behalf of his community, on behalf of his friends and neighbors Stan really was a guiding light and continues to be a guiding light in Carson City for all who knew him and will continue to feel his presence," said Supervisor Lisa Schuette.

The second award was presented to Carson City resident Sarah Martin, who purchased the Rinckel Mansion three years ago. The historic mansion was was built in 1876, and Martin has worked to preserve the building and took on the challenge of restoring the exterior.
