Topsy Lane in Carson City opened its doors for a soft opening and this week, they will celebrate their official grand opening all weekend long.

Ace Hardware is a popular home improvement and hardware store that has a few long-established stores in Gardnerville and Reno, but this is the first in the capital city.

The store offers everything from power tools to paint, kitchen wares to bird houses, plumbing to patios and everything in between.

According to owner Aaron Wickstrom, he decided to open a location for the popular hardware store in Carson City because of his love for the region.

“People are great and friendly, and it reminds me of the small city-town I grew up in,” said Wickstrom, who grew up between central California and northern Minnesota. “I just love the area, everyone has been so nice and welcoming.”

What Wickstrom said sets Ace Hardware apart from competitors is customer service.

“We make it a point to excel in customer service,” Wickstrom said. “We have a lot of retired people who worked in trades who bring that level of expertise. Even if we don’t know the answer, we know how to figure it out to solve the issue.”

The grand opening at Ace Hardware begins Friday and continues through Sunday.

Each day brings unique deals, Wickstrom said, as well as raffles.

On Friday, they’ll be raffling off a Milwaukee cordless drill set; on Saturday, a Webber gas grill and on Sunday, a two burner Blackstone griddle.

In addition, on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a number of things to snack on, including pizza and tri-tip samples on Saturday, free coffee and donuts on Sunday, and free ice cream both days.

The official ribbon cutting will be taking place at 10 a.m. Friday.

Grand opening hours for this weekend are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Ace Hardware is located at 971 Topsy Ln. Suite 334, in the old Pier 1/Spirt Store location.

For more information, stop by the store or call (775) 434-1030.
Business Mon, 23 Sep 2024 22:10:07 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 132551 at https://www.carsonnow.org A new era for Jewish life in the Carson City area: Chabad Center to open in time for the High Holidays https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/23/2024/new-era-jewish-life-carson-city-area-chabad-center-open-just-time-high-hol
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/23/2024/new-era-jewish-life-carson-city-area-chabad-center-open-just-time-high-hol" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Chabad of Carson City

This High Holiday season, Carson City’s Jewish community will celebrate with a renewed sense of belonging and pride, as Rabbi Levi and Chana Sputz announce the opening of Chabad of Carson City.

The center is set to meet the growing needs of Jewish residents in Carson City and surrounding areas, serving as a home for Jewish life and community in Carson City and the Carson Valley: Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa. It will offer a wide range of Jewish services, classes, and holiday programming.

“We are thrilled to establish a home for Jewish life in Carson City,” says Rabbi Levi Sputz. “For years, local Jews had to travel elsewhere for Jewish programs. Now, we are proud to create a space where every Jew can feel welcomed, connected, and supported — right here in their own backyard.”

A Community-Driven Initiative
Rabbi Levi and Chana Sputz first moved to Reno to establish the Chabad Learning Center, offering Torah classes for adults across Northern Nevada. Over the past year, their outreach expanded to Carson City, and following an overwhelming response to local events — such as the public Menorah lighting at Bob McFadden Plaza, which brought together local officials and families — the Sputzes saw a clear need for a permanent Jewish space. The new center will be “an address for everything Jewish,” offering Shabbat dinners, Torah classes, children’s programs, and holiday celebrations for Jews of all backgrounds.

“Carson City is a vibrant and diverse community,” says Chana Sputz. “We want to ensure that every Jew — whether they’ve lived here for decades or just moved—has access to the traditions, teachings, and joy that make Jewish life so special.”

Global Mission, Local Impact

As part of the global Chabad-Lubavitch movement, Chabad of Carson City is inspired by the teachings of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory. “The Rebbe taught that every Jew matters, no matter where they are,” says Rabbi Sputz. “That’s why Chabad centers have opened in cities large and small worldwide. We’re honored to bring that vision to Carson City.”

With more than 3,500 centers in over 100 countries, Chabad continues to create inclusive, welcoming environments for Jewish learning and connection. Chabad of Carson City will extend that legacy by providing a permanent Jewish presence in a community that, until now, has lacked one.

Join the Celebration

Chabad of Carson City will open in time for the upcoming High Holidays, offering a traditional Rosh Hashanah dinner and a public Shofar blowing to welcome the Jewish New Year. I have always been fond of rocks, ever since I overheard a geologist uncle of mine assure my aunt while pointing to an eight-year-old me, “That boy’s got rocks in his head.”

However, I found a new appreciation for rocks while hiking, as Dave elucidated on their content, their virtue and their beauty. Though at one point I did trip on a gobblin that I mistook for a half-gobblin. Then too, I was alarmed to learn that an active earthquake fault passes directly beneath my bed. I could get a wakeup call by Mother Earth tonight, and end up on the floor. I also resolved to give every volcano I see a wide berth, no matter how old Dave thinks it might be, or how old the Stanford grad at my side thinks it might be.

One member of our party asked Dave how old Lake Tahoe is, and I could not help but to jump in ahead of him and answer that question, as I happened to know the answer down to the very year. Dave looked a little perturbed as I expounded, “Lake Tahoe is three million and three years old.”

There was a hush before Dave asked, “So, good sir, how do you know Lake Tahoe is three million and three years old?”

“Well, you see, a Washoe elder told me Tahoe was three million years old and that was three years ago.”

Dave gave me an indulging smile, before kicking the dirt (granular granite) with his boot. I wanted to take over the leadership of the tour at that point, but Dave held his ground.

One of our members sported a shirt that boasted DEAD SEA on her chest, and I could not help but to whisper to her, “I was there when the Dead Sea was only sick.”

She looked at me like I had asked to borrow five dollars, and stuck her tongue out at me.

I guess it didn’t help that I was wearing a t-shirt that swaggered a Cal football win over Stanford away back in 1982 with “The Play” diagramed there on my chest, involving six laterals for a touchdown that knocked over half the Stanford band waiting in the end zone to celebrate Stanford’s seemingly certain victory.

Well, those Stanford grads took to looking at me like I had tested positive for Covid, but then when I asked a lady for one little cookie when I could see she had two, she gave them both to me. So I do love them Stanford grads, though by the end of Dave’s fascinating tour, I found myself biting my nails in anticipation of a looming earthquake or lava flow, and promised myself that I would go to confession on the following Sunday.

— For more than 35 years, in over 4,000 performances, columnist and Chautauquan McAvoy Layne has been dedicated to preserving the wit and wisdom of “The Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope,” Mark Twain. Exhibit hours are 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is free.

These fragments add up to convey the many dreams and voices colliding in places like these for a brief moment lived all at once, as well as the echoes and remnants left behind once a boom is over. The original documentary images are refracted and re-formed as they stretch across and texturally blend with industrial surfaces. Past and present collapse into visceral imagery, an archetypal landscape wandered by subjects and viewers alike. Let's poke holes in time and inhabit this landscape together. This work is contingent on immersion and wandering, and invites the body into the experience of film: as wanderer, visitor, archaeologist, curator.

This work is not about the political or environmental implications of North Dakota’s oil boom, but about the lived experience of those who are part of it and the force of our industrial history. This work features the voices and experiences of those blue collar workers that underlay our world.

Breaking Ground evokes the memory of those who once worked at the Donovan Mill, and invites the public to consider its own history in relation to other places.

The Donovan Mill is an historic silver stamp mill in Silver City, Nevada where zinc and cyanide methods for processing ore were perfected in the late 1800s, eliminating the need for poisonous mercury. With this innovation, the Donovan played a critical role in Nevada’s wealth and dominance of the silver industry for the next century. Come rediscover and explore this exquisite site, still standing nearly complete, and an interpretation of how it connects to industrial history across America.

Breaking Ground is not a sequential performance; therefore, come anytime during exhibit hours. Wear warm clothing and good shoes, as you will be exploring a fairly raw industrial site and the terrain can be uneven. If it is difficult for you to walk or see, this may be a challenging exhibit. May not be appropriate for young children.

GENEROUSLY SPONSORED BY:
Nevada Arts Council
The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture
Carson Demolition
GE Excavating
National Endowment for the Arts
To see more on this project visit:
www.breakinggroundexhibit.com
www.breakinggroundexhibit.com/donavan-mill
Silver City, Nevada
#comstockfoundation #comstockhistory #virginiacitynevada #donovanmill #comstockmines #silvercitynevada #virginiacity #historical #historicalplaces #historylover #historylovers #historicalplace #miningtown #mininghistory #mininglife # Arts and Entertainment Comstock Historic District experimental photography Sun, 22 Sep 2024 22:52:15 +0000 132490 at https://www.carsonnow.org Nevada Artists Association presents 'Moments in the Fall: Photographing the Fall Colors' by Heather Nicole https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/nevada-artists-association-presents-moments-fall-photographing-fall-colors
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/nevada-artists-association-presents-moments-fall-photographing-fall-colors" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Deborah Foster

Join Heather Nicole, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to noon at Nevada Artists Association Gallery, 449 W. The talk is free, open to the community, and sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Carson City, Nev.
See the flyer below.
“Fear can be overcome and even healed in our lives by discovering the strong connection and relationship we have to something bigger than ourselves — God,” says Troseth. “By learning to lean and rely on this greater, higher good, we can feel moved to love beyond ourselves — and this frees us from fear and so much more.”
Sharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science, Troseth will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy.
Troseth will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy, who came to understand, confirm, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand, “He that believes on me, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible).
For over 150 years, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties.
Lisa Troseth has been a Christian Science practitioner for many years, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. She travels from her home base in Rogers, Arkansas, to speak to audiences around the world as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

Moving past fear to healing talk in Carson City by Carson Now on Scribd
Announcements Sun, 22 Sep 2024 21:42:08 +0000 Jeff Munson 132538 at https://www.carsonnow.org Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail bike ride from Carson City to Reno set for Oct. 12 https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/historic-virginia-truckee-trail-annual-vt-bike-ride
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/historic-virginia-truckee-trail-annual-vt-bike-ride" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail

A fun ride along the historic Virginia & Truckee Trail is planned for Saturday, Oct. 12. The utility also said it would simultaneously halve the cost customers pay per kilowatt hour for electricity, a move the utility said would result in no net increase in average customer bills but opponents said would penalize those who conserve energy or utilize solar.

The proposed rate increase garnered substantial public protest — more than 250 people offered fiery comments during multiple consumer sessions hosted by utility regulators, and groups ranging from the Nevada Conservation League to Solar United Neighbors offered vocal opposition.

The Solar Energies Industry Association described the proposal as “extreme [and] unsupported,” claiming that NV Energy was attempting to work around legislative protections for net energy metering customers “under the guise of bill stability.”

Instead, the three-member Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved a $2 per month increase, or 12 percent, for Northern Nevada single family residential users. The new monthly charge, set to go into effect in October, will put Northern Nevada customers on an equal footing with the basic service charge paid by their Southern Nevada counterparts.

“NV Energy teams are already in the process of analyzing the various components of the order and what it means to northern Nevada customer bills and rates,” a spokesperson for the utility said in an email.

Commissioner Randy Brown said the original request by NV Energy was “much too high.”

According to Advanced Energy United, a nationwide industry association focused on clean energy, the highest fixed charge in the nation for investor-owned utilities is $34.71, in Mississippi. The national average is $11.66 across 170 other investor-owned utilities.

“Today’s decision not only prevents a disastrous rate hike for households, but also shows that the PUCN listened to consumers’ concerns,” Advanced Energy United’s Nevada lead Emilie Olson said in an email. “Opting for a modest increase instead, the PUCN’s vote demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing affordability for all consumers, safeguarding Northern Nevadan ratepayers from unfair monthly rate hikes, and setting a positive precedent that will help prevent similarly onerous basic service charge increases for consumers in Southern Nevada as well.”

In its draft order, the commission stated that the proposed increase was “inordinately large and not in the public interest,” noting that it would disproportionately affect low-usage customers and would discourage energy conservation. The order countered NV Energy’s arguments about price stability by noting that most of the volatility in customer bills came from fuel costs.

NV Energy generates its electricity from a portfolio that includes coal, solar, geothermal and natural gas. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects natural gas prices will stay lower in 2024 than in previous years because of higher-than-normal inventory. More than half of the electricity used in Nevada is generated at natural gas plants.

When natural gas prices rise again, opponents to the rate increase argued, so would customers’ bills. NV Energy countered that raising the basic service charge while lowering the amount paid for usage would keep prices more stable during times of volatile natural gas prices.

In its original request, NV Energy described the basic service charge increase as necessary to cover investment costs in Northern Nevada, including expanding service and addressing a financial shortfall caused by net metering — credits residential solar producers get for adding electricity to the grid. To do so, the utility said it needed to recover nearly $106 million annually from ratepayers, with most of that, $95 million, coming from residential electricity users.

State energy regulators also limited requested increases for charges to multifamily residential users and natural gas customers.

NV Energy requested the basic service charge paid by multifamily residential users be raised from $8 to $18.80 per month; the commission instead is allowing an increase to $9.25. The utility will also be allowed to increase the basic service charge for its small commercial users and natural gas customers, from $14 to $16, less than the $18 requested by NV Energy.

The commission also lowered NV Energy’s overall request by setting the return on equity for shareholders at 9.65 percent, a small increase from the current rate of 9.5 percent but far below the utility’s proposed jump to 10.4 percent.

— This story is used with permission of The Nevada Independent. Go here for updates to this and other Nevada Independent stories.
Nevada Politics Sun, 22 Sep 2024 18:55:18 +0000 admin 132533 at https://www.carsonnow.org Carson City emergency crews called to crash involving 3 vehicles at Curry and 5th Street https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/22/2024/carson-city-emergency-crews-called-crash-involving-3-vehicles-curry-and-5th-street
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/22/2024/carson-city-emergency-crews-called-crash-involving-3-vehicles-curry-and-5th-street" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Sunday morning to a crash reportedly involving three vehicles near the intersection of Fifth and Curry streets.

The crash was reported at around 10:45 a.m. First responders were checking on injuries in the t-bone collision.
