Carson City arrests: Sheriff's deputies book two for suspected DUIs

A 51-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI (drugs) second offense and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

According to the booking report, a deputy was dispatched at 4:29 p.m. to the 3200 block of Market Street in reference to a welfare check on a possible intoxicated driver.

The reporting party observed a vehicle that could not maintain its lane and speed. The reporting party had followed the vehicle from Washoe Valley to the Market Street parking lot and observed a man who appeared to be highly intoxicated, stumbling out of his vehicle and had fallen, the report states.

A CCSO sergeant located the vehicle driving northbound on I-580 near the College Parkway on ramp. The sergeant conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver and sole occupant.

Another officer arrived and made contact with the driver, who was sweating and had a thick white film around his mouth. He also had red watery eyes and thick slurred speech, the report states. The officer asked the man to step out of the vehicle, which he did.

The man agreed to submit to field sobriety tests. He denied taking prescribed medications. He showed signs of impairment on all tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .000, the report states. Due to the totality of circumstances and results from the standardized field sobriety tests, the man was arrested. He agreed to consent to a blood test and was taken to the hospital where two vials of blood were drawn and booked into evidence.

Due to the man's vehicle partially blocking traffic, a tow truck was requested. A deputy advised that he located a "tooter" straw, commonly used for inhaling narcotics, on the passenger seat during inventory, according to the report.

The deputy notes in the report that while completing paperwork at the jail, the man's speech became slower and slurred. The deputy asked the man what day it was and he said it was Friday. He kept losing his balance and could not follow instructions. Bail: $2,500.

In other arrests:
— A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for suspicion of DUI, speeding and other misdemeanor offenses. According to the report, a deputy patrolling the area of Imperial Way approaching College Parkway observed a SUV failing to complete a stop at the stop sign.

The officer followed the vehicle as it continued west on College Parkway to the controlled intersection with North Carson Street. The vehicle turned south after the light changed, with the vehicle accelerating, pulling away from the deputy's patrol vehicle. The vehicle continued to travel at a high rate of speed, with the patrol vehicle accelerating to 80 mph to catch up. The officer activated their lights signaling for the vehicle to pull over. The vehicle pulled over in the 2200 block of North Carson Street.

The officer approached the driver, who stated he was trying to get home. The man spoke slowly with slurred speech. The man searched for his driver's license, registration and proof of insurance and informed the officer he did not have his driver's license. He continued looking and didn't have the registration and insurance information.

The officer smelled an odor of alcohol coming from the man's breath. The officer asked if he had been drinking. The man replied he had one beer approximately an hour prior. The man was asked if he would submit to field sobriety tests. The man responded no. He was asked to step out of the vehicle. The man was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He provided a preliminary breath test of .208. He initially volunteered to give his blood for voluntary evidence but then retracted and stated he did not want to freely give blood.

The deputy contacted the on-call district attorney and judge for a warrant, which was granted. The man was taken to jail without incident and a blood draw was performed. He was booked for suspicion of DUI, speeding, failing to possess a driver's license and failure to change address on registration. Bail: $1,137.

— A 35-year-old man was arrested Monday for a misdemeanor violation of suspended sentence warrant issued Oct. 27, 2022 out of Carson City Municipal Court. Bail: $3,000 cash.

All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The policy of Carson Now is to name anyone who is arrested for a felony offense.

Nevada 4-H Expo to showcase skills gained through Youth Development Program

Youth from across the state will gather in Fallon this Thursday through Saturday at the Nevada 4-H Expo to showcase the diverse skills and knowledge they have developed through the University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program.

The Expo, an annual celebration of the talents and achievements of Nevada’s 4-H youth, will take place from Thursday, Sept. 19 to Saturday, Sept. 21 at the 3C Events Complex in Fallon, located in Churchill County.

Free and open to the public, the Expo is packed with activities, exhibitions and competitions for all ages. It includes more than 160 4-H members, ages 5 to 18, statewide, with more than 570 individual exhibition entries in various categories, including projects in animal care, STEM and creative arts.

During the event, youth will display their expertise in areas such as caring for small and large animals, from amphibians and reptiles to cows, horses and dogs, as well as in shooting sports, art, photography, cooking, sewing and STEM activities. Participating 4-H members will also demonstrate their livestock knowledge through a series of livestock skill-a-thons and a quiz bowl, where senior youth, ages 14 to 19, will compete for a chance to attend the Western National Roundup. The 4-H Expo competition emphasizes personal and civic development, STEM skills, public speaking, leadership and livestock and horse knowledge. Additionally, the event will serve as the statewide culmination of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program.

“4-H is about more than just agriculture — it is about equipping young people with the skills they need to succeed in life,” Lindsay Chichester, Extension’s Nevada 4-H Youth Development Program leader, said. “The Expo is a celebration of their hard work and dedication throughout the year, and a testament to the impact 4-H has on our communities.”

Events on Friday, Sept. 20, will include livestock health inspections, static exhibits and various livestock showmanship activities. The day will end with a 2-mile fun glow run from 6 to 8 p.m., open to the public. The run, which serves as a fundraiser for the Expo, has a $20 registration fee that includes a T-shirt and promotional giveaways. Those interested in participating can register onsite at the event.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, attendees can expect to see dog showmanship and obedience competitions, shooting sports, a livestock quiz bowl and a poultry show. The Expo will also honor 4-H volunteers who have excelled in strengthening youth-adult partnerships and recognize their contributions throughout the year.

Attendees can also participate in a silent auction that will support the state’s Shooting Sports Program.

Nurturing future leaders
"We often say that 4-H is a youth’s first college course because it prepares them for secondary education and helps them develop essential life skills," Sarah Chvilicek, Extension 4-H Youth Development Program coordinator for Northern Nevada and Washoe County program manager said.

In fact, a 10-year study by Tufts University shows that 4-H youth are four times more likely to give back to their communities, two times more likely to make healthier choices, two times more likely to participate in STEM activities and two times more likely to be civically active.

4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization empowering nearly 6 million young people with a voice and skills to make positive impacts in their lives and within their communities. Nevada 4-H Youth Development Program caters to youth, ages 5 to 19, providing hands-on learning experiences, mentorship opportunities, and the chance to explore various STEM disciplines in fun and interactive ways. The program offers a diverse range of clubs, STEM programs, in-school and afterschool activities, and summer camps, all aimed at empowering youth with the skills and confidence needed to thrive as engaged citizens.

Carson City winter shelter program Night Off the Streets to hold volunteer training

Training sessions for volunteers will be conducted by Night Off the Streets, Inc., also known as NOTS, warming center on Sept. 26 and Sept. 28 at the First United Methodist Church in Carson City.

For the 7th year, NOTS will provide a place for those without homes to sleep during the winter nights from November 1 through March 31. A different church in Carson City hosts the warming shelter each month. All community members are welcome to serve as volunteers.

The training sessions cover the roles of volunteers on each of the three shifts during the night. Training will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on Sept. 26, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 28. Volunteers need to attend just one of the two sessions.

For those considering to serve as a volunteer, the sessions provide an opportunity to learn more about NOTS as well.

“Without the support of volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to provide a warm and safe place to sleep for our unhoused community. Our volunteers truly make a difference in people’s lives,” says Jodi Miller, Center Manager.

The NOTS warming center was founded after several homeless people died of hypothermia while sleeping outdoors in Carson City. Since opening the center, no one has died from exposure to the cold in Carson City, according to Craig LaGier, founder of NOTS.

In addition to providing a warm, safe place to sleep, NOTS also connects guests with services that will help them get off the street. Last winter, 12 guests found employment and 8 guests found permanent housing. Fourteen guests were connected with Veteran’s Administration services in Reno.

Pre-registration is not required to attend the training sessions, but is encouraged. The First United Methodist Church, the site of the training, is located at 212 N. Division St. in Carson City.

Davis Fire update Tuesday: 92 percent contained, BAER team begins post fire assessment

Firefighting crews have achieved 92 percent containment on the Davis Fire, according to a Tuesday morning briefing from the U.S. Forest Service. The fire, south of Reno and north of Carson City that began in Washoe Valley Sept. 7, has burned 5,824 acres. The cause remains under investigation.

Here's the latest from the U.S. Forest Service:

Highlights: Firefighters made incredible progress on the fire yesterday, increasing containment to 92%. Today, fire personnel are splitting efforts between patrolling fire activity and repairing affected area. There are no active suppression efforts or mop up occurring at this time. Due to the increase in containment, some fire resources are being reassigned to other wildfire incidents, so we will begin to see a drop in number of personnel. Please continue to travel with caution near affected areas for the safety of the public and the firefighters still working in the area.

Weather: There is a 10% chance of rain today as a new storm system approaches, with expectations of a 70% chance of rain tomorrow. The average max temperature will be 64 degrees, with high relative humidity that persists throughout the day. Expect winds of 9mph with gusts up to 18mph. Rain yesterday assisted by diminishing fire behavior, limiting any smoldering occurring on the fire.

BAER: A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has been established by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest to begin a post-fire burned area assessment of the Davis Fire that burned National Forest System land. BAER teams coordinate with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Weather Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Land Management, and other federal, state, counties, and local agencies as they assess potential post-fire impacts to the effected watersheds. Carson High Athletics announces McGowan as varsity girls softball coach, Wacker to coach swimming

Carson High Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Ellise McGowan as the new head varsity girls softball coach and Adriane Wacker as the new head swim coach at Carson High School.

Coach McGowan has been the head coach for junior varsity softball team for the past year. From 2017-2019, she was an assistant and third base coach for the Wichita Pilots, a 16U competitive summer league softball team. And from 2013-2017, she was a collegiate softball player where she was a utility player, playing all eight positions on the field with the exception of pitcher. McGowan grew up in Carson City and attended CHS from 2009-2013. She played tennis, basketball and softball.

McGowan earned a bachelor’s in Sports Communication from Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. She was a member of the Hispanic-American Leadership Organization and was on the dean’s list from 2015-2017. Prior to Newman University, McGowan was a student-athlete and softball captain her freshman year at Hesston College. She was also a member of the Hesston College Newspaper.

Coach Wacker has worked for the Carson City School District for nearly 11 years as an English teacher, librarian and Art teacher at both Carson High and Fritsch Elementary Schools. She grew up in Carson City and attended CHS from 1995-1999. She swam for the Carson Tiger Sharks and the Carson High School swim team. During her time on the CHS swim team, she was on a relay team that helped the girls team win state four years in a row. She also swam with UNR for one semester.

Wacker has been heavily involved with Carson Tiger Sharks and has a daughter on the local team and one on the high school team. She also has helped with the snack bar for the CHS swim team. She loves teaching at the High School and swimming is a huge part of her life. There is a likely chance you will see her swimming laps at the Carson Aquatics Center.

Bob Boldrick 50th Anniversary Block Party happening Saturday at Carson City Community Center

A day of free family fun for the community is planned in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Bob Boldrick Theater located at the Carson City Community Center.

The block party will begin on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at 11 a.m. with free activities and games for the whole family all around the Community Center, including face painting, temporary tattoos, cornhole, bubbles, a puppet-making craft; hands-on learning experiences hosted by local groups, food trucks and more.

If you’ve ever wanted to see the inner workings of the sound and light booths or where the magic happens backstage, check out the backstage tours beginning every hour on the hour. Bring your pocketbook if you’re feeling lucky — the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation nonprofit will be selling raffle tickets for $1, with all proceeds going toward theater equipment for the Bob Boldrick Theater.

The Blue Thunder Marching Band will signal that the block party is wrapping up, and it’s time to head inside for a free performance on the stage! The showcase performance at 2 p.m. will feature short snippets of music ensembles, dance troupes, and children’s musical theatre, emceed by local favorite Ben Spence and none other than Miss Nevada, Karrina Ferris, who is no stranger to this stage!

Five Days and Counting: 35th annual Dayton Valley Days happening Sept. 21-22

The countdown continues as we are five days away from Dayton Valley Days, a two-day outdoor street festival where friends and families come together to celebrate in the historic downtown area. Now in its 35th year, the festival will be held in Old Town Dayton on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22 starting at 8:30 a.m.

It's the largest to date with 150 vendors, crafters and food trucks and informational booths expected to line Pike Street. Organized by the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Dayton Valley Days is packed with fun activities for everyone.

The Show 'n' Shine kicks off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. on Main St., showcasing over 50 cars and trucks of all makes. The Cherry Bomb Betties will host the inaugural Pin-Up Contest on the vintage front balcony of Js' Bistro, beginning at 11:30 AM, with the Queen crowned at 12:30 PM. Another exciting Saturday-only event is the Cornhole tournament, sponsored by Sierra Nevada Cornhole, starting at 10 a.m. (see info below).

Greg Austin will perform Saturday afternoon on the Front Porch of the Community Center, bringing music sure to get everyone rocking. On Sunday, the band Jacked Up Tahoe, a five-piece group known for keeping toes tapping, will perform on the Front Porch.

On Sunday, don’t miss the beloved and popular Pet Parade! Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Dog Park Booth (located by Compadres), with the parade beginning at 10 AM.

Stop by the Community Center for the Pancake Breakfast, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Dayton Valley. Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. each day, featuring eggs, sausage, all-you-can-eat pancakes, and Larry’s Gourmet Coffee!

Be sure to check out Dayton Valley Days favorites like Comstock Gold Panning, Historical Society of Dayton Valley Museum Tours, the Antique Tractor Exhibit (on 2nd Street), and over 140 craft and food booths. The Dayton Valley Lions Club will offer their "Vision Screening for Children" program inside the Community Center. The Kids Zone, sponsored by Calvary Baptist Church, will feature games, fun activities, and a climbing wall, all located next to Compadres in shady Logan Alley.

Brittnee Somers, Vice President of Events for the Chamber and Dayton Valley Days Co-Chair, has led the event since the Chamber took it over in 2022. "This year, we’ve extended Saturday’s hours to 6 PM to give everyone more time to enjoy the event," said Somers. "Don’t forget to add Dayton Valley Days to your calendar!"

Cathy Mitchell, who co-chairs Dayton Valley Days with Somers, is in charge of the Raffle and Silent Auction, held inside the Community Center (170 Pike St.). Mitchell encourages everyone to stop by and get a head start on their Christmas shopping! Raffle hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

John Cassinelli, Chamber President and Lyon County Commissioner-Elect, is helping with the heavy lifting. From moving bleacher stands to setting up the food tent, you'll find John wherever there’s work to be done! Be sure to join him for a beer at the Cornhole Tournament on Saturday!

Richard Mitrotz, the new Executive Director of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, who began his role on May 1st, has hit the ground running. He expressed his gratitude to legendary artist Steven Saylor for creating the artwork commemorating the 35th anniversary and for allowing the Chamber to produce limited-edition, signed, and numbered event t-shirts and other merchandise. Saylor’s wife, Johnye, serves on the Chamber board and is a member of the event committee.

"We wouldn’t be able to run this festival without the hard work of the Dayton Valley Days committee" said Mitrotz. The committee is made up of festival vendors, Chamber members, and local citizens who work for months to prepare for this autumn event.

Carson Now recognized for award winning stories at 2024 Nevada Press Association ceremony

On Saturday, the Nevada Press Association held its annual conference and award ceremony in Reno, during which the winners of 2024 press awards were announced. Carson Now brought home four wins for the year.

First Place: Coverage of Underserved Communities (rural)

It’s been two years since Anna Marie Scott was murdered, and still, law enforcement remains silent

On a chilly February morning in 2022, early morning commuters on I-580 through Washoe Valley were met with a horrific sight: a car in the southbound lanes was fully consumed in fire.

When first responders arrived, the situation became far more grisly after it was discovered that the body of a young woman, later to be identified as 23-year-old Anna Marie Scott, was inside of the trunk.

There were no witnesses to the abandonment of the vehicle, or it being set on fire.

Since the discovery of Scott’s body, information regarding the case has been frustratingly lacking.

Despite Scott’s body being discovered on Feb. 3, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office did not release her identity until Feb. 7, even though numerous social media posts from friends and family had already been posted regarding her death.

Second Place: Profile (rural)

‘Real Cowboys’ docudrama series filmed in Dayton, Virginia City, Carson City premieres in October

Dayton resident Temma Hammond has worked in the film industry all her life, having first grown up in film studios courtesy of her Hollywood-adjacent parents. Her father was a silent film star and studio owner, and her mother was a writer, director and acting coach.

It only makes sense that Hammond would follow in their footsteps. After leaving California, Hammond worked for some time in Las Vegas where she designed and built the first sound-proofed studio, before moving to Carson City to work on producing legislative and other local film projects in the early 2000s — including setting up a number of film workshops at Western Nevada College and Truckee Meadows Community College.

Now, Hammond is back, and right out of the gates to work on a docudrama series called Real Cowboys, hosted by Lacy J. Dalton, for her newest endeavor: the Golden Network.

Third Place: Community Service (rural)

Critical need for foster parents in Carson City and Quad-County region; without fosters, children sent statewide

Currently, there is a critical shortage of foster parents in Carson City and the surrounding areas both for long-term foster parents and respite care foster parents, who take care of children for as little as a weekend while their foster parents take a trip.

According to the Division of Child and Family Services’ Rural Foster Recruiter Shelby Riley, there are currently only three beds open across Carson City, Dayton and Gardnerville.

Carson City has the most foster homes at ten homes, while Dayton has four homes and Gardnerville has one, all of which are full up.

Within the ten homes in Carson City, three beds are open across the lot, which means that siblings are unable to be placed together.

When asked what the ideal number of homes could be, Riley said there can never be enough homes.

“Even doubling right now wouldn’t be enough,” Riley said. “It really depends because the need for foster care ebbs and flows. The more people we have, the more we can help our community.”

Third Place: Health Reporting (rural)

Carson City Health and Human Services cited by OSHA for potential chemical exposure, lack of necessary training

Since the 1980s, Carson City Health and Human Services has been undertaking mosquito abatement to stem the flow of potential mosquito-borne diseases.

However, it was determined that for many years — and possibly even decades — CCHHS hasn't had a Hazard Communication Plan, which is meant to provide proper training to employees on handling dangerous or toxic chemicals. Without training, this could mean that employees may have been exposed to dangerous chemicals as part of the abatement program.

Carson City deputies make arrests for alleged DUI, domestic battery and weapon offenses

A 35-year-old man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and basic speeding, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

At around 9:17 p.m. a deputy was in the area of William and Roop streets and observed a SUV going southbound on Roop at a high rate of speed. The officer caught up to the vehicle, which turned eastbound on 5th Street. The officer paced the car going 54 mph in a 25 mph zone and conducted a traffic stop near Elaine Street and 5th Street, according to the booking report.

The deputy made contact with the driver and could smell an odor of alcohol coming from his person. The man had red watery eyes. He was asked how much he had to drink. The man said he had four beers earlier. The officer asked where he was coming from. The man said he had been at a bar earlier and had picked up a friend to give them a ride to Walmart, the report states.

The man agreed to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .204 and was arrested. He was read a request for voluntary evidence where the man agreed to a blood test. Bail: $1,137.

In other arrests:
— A 39-year-old woman was arrested Saturday for suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's office booking report.

At 1:03 p.m. deputies were dispatch for a report of domestic battery. The reporting party stated his ex-girlfriend had battered him and that he was bleeding from the lip. The man denied medical attention and said he was in the garage and that his girlfriend was inside the home.

Deputies arrived and found the man waiting inside the garage. He walked out and spoke with a deputy while the woman was inside. He said she had taken his phone and he took it back and that she followed him into the garage where he has a camera set up. He said she followed him and began to punch him, which caused his lip to bleed.

The officer could see a small laceration with fresh blood. The man showed the officer the video camera, where the woman follows him and the man saying something along the lines of "leave me alone," the report states. She continues to follow him to the end of the garage, where she begins to punch him. He covered his face with his arms and pushes the woman away from him. She is seen falling backward onto her back. The man does not approach her and stayed where he was. The woman stands up and walks away as seen in the video, according to the report.

Officers made contact with the woman inside the home. She stated she gave the man coffee and then grabbed his phone and ran into a nearby bathroom. She said she attempted to close the bathroom door but the man wouldn't let her. She said this is where he pushed her and he got his phone back, walking away into the garage.

She said she followed him and admitted to attempting to punch him but nothing landed. She said she pushed the man an additional time. The officer asked her if anyone had witnessed that he pushed her. She said no. The officer asked if there were any cameras in the living room. She said no. At the time her daughter was upstairs and unable to witness the incident. The woman did have an abrasion on one of her elbows. Photos were taken of the elbow.

Based on the video surveillance provided, the arresting deputy determined the woman to be the primary aggressor. Bail: $3,137.

— A 32-year-old man, Rusty Lee Beseau, was arrested Saturday, for alleged felony carrying a concealed firearm without a permit, misdemeanor DUI second, possession of a firearm under the influence of alcohol, driving with a revoked license and expired registration.

According to the booking report, on Sept. 14 at around 2:01 a.m. a deputy was in the area of William Street and I-580 traveling eastbound and observed an SUV with expired registration. The officer initiated a traffic stop at Highway 50 East and Lompa Lane, where the vehicle entered the parking lot and continued through the parking lot, parking in front of the entrance. The officer requested a cover unit.

A deputy approached the vehicle and observed two occupants. The officer asked the driver, Beseau, why he did not stop earlier. The man man stated his father was a cop and told him to always park in a parking spot when pulled over. The officer informed the man he was pulled over due to expired registration. The man stated he already knew why he was being pulled over, the report states.

While speaking, the officer observed the man to have red, watery eyes and spoke with thick slurred speech. The officer could immediately smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle, the report states. The passenger was cleared and later released from the scene.

The deputy observed two cases in the back seat, one appeared to be a pool stick case and the other appeared to be a rifle case. The officer asked the man if the two cases were pool sticks and he stated they were. The officer asked the man if there were any weapons inside the vehicle and he stated yes. The man stated he had a gun on him and it was in his pocket. The officer ordered the man to not reach for it. Another deputy arrived shortly after. The officer asked the man to step out of the vehicle, the report states.

A deputy located a chrome Bearman BBG9 Derringer handgun inside the man's left pants pocket. The officer secured the handgun and handed it over to the other deputy. Dispatch advised the man had a revoked driver's license and confirmed he does not have a CCW permit. The officer walked to the man's vehicle and asked him how much he had to drink. The man stated he took a shot or two while playing pool earlier. While speaking the officer confirmed the odor of alcohol coming from the man's breath, according to the report.

He submitted to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment. He provided a preliminary breath test of .298 and was arrested. At jailed he agreed to evidentiary breath tests with results of .212 and .212, according to the report. He was released to jail staff and booked for alleged DUI second, carrying concealed firearm without a permit, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, driving while revoked and expired registration. The officer later took pictures and booked the handgun and one round of 9mm into evidence. Bail: $10,000.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of DUI and basic speeding. According to the booking report, a deputy conducted a traffic stop for driving over the speed limit. The driver was paced going 62-mph in a 40 mph zone. The stop was at the intersection of East William and Gold Dust Way.

The officer made contact with the driver who did not roll down his window right away. Once the driver did roll down the window the officer approached the vehicle and immediately noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver, the report states.

The man was told why he was pulled over. The officer requested his drivers license, registration and insurance. The man was able get his license but struggled finding other paperwork and was unable to locate it. He admitted to having four beers, the report states. He was asked asked to step out of the vehicle. He agreed to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment. He provided a preliminary breath test of .17 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI and speeding. He provided evidentiary breath tests of .137 and .129. He was booked for suspicion of DUI first and basic speeding over 21 mph. Bail: $1,080.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man, Eerik David Salas-Lopez, was arrested Sept. 14, 12:35 a.m. for suspicion of carry concealed firearm without a permit. Bail: $10,000.

— A 28-year-old man was arrested Sept. 14 for a misdemeanor warrant alleging failure to comply with substance abuse counseling. Bail: $1,000 cash.

One dead, two survive mid air collision plane crash near Minden-Tahoe Airport

UPDATE 1:34PM: The FAA reports a single-engine Globe GC-1B Swift collided with a single-engine Cessna 206 midair near the Minden-Tahoe Airport killing the sole occupant on the Globe. Meanwhile, KRNV reports there were two survivors. Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverly confirms one of the planes involved was Civil Air Patrol.

UPDATE 11AM: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has responded to a mid-air collision, which happened at the Minden-Tahoe Airport at 9:47 a.m. One aircraft was able to make a landing at the airport, while the other crashed into a field off Highway 395 near Johnson Lane, said Douglas County spokesman Eric Cachinero.

One fatality is confirmed at this time. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is open, with one runway available. This is an ongoing investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.

East Fork Fire Protection and Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded Monday morning to the area south of Johnson Lane near Heybourne Road for a report of an airplane crash.

The incident happened before 10 a.m. Via police scanner, first responders on scene report an upside down aircraft and called for additional support. The East Fork Fire Protection chief was also responding. Crews on scene identified a tail number for the aircraft. It is unknown at this time if there are any injuries or fatalities.

Dispatch was alerted at 9:47 a.m. by a reporting party who saw an airplane go down.

Details are limited and we will update as more information becomes available.

An airplane crash happened near the Minden-Tahoe Airport on August 20, where one person died.

Silver Springs man identified in fatal Lyon County crash on US-50A

A Silver Springs man has been identified in a fatal crash that happened last month on US-50A in Lyon County, according to Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol.

Howard Ackerson, 94, from Silver Springs, died from injuries in the August 26, 2024 crash on US-50A and 6th Street, according to a NHP news release.

At approximately 11:05 a.m., the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol responded to the crash. The preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2023 Mazda CX-5 was traveling westbound on US-50A.

For reasons unconfirmed at this time, the driver of the Mazda departed the travel lane off the roadway right and traveled adjacent to US-50A, then input steering to re-enter the roadway, failed to maintain the westbound travel lanes and struck an eastbound red 2004 Dodge Neon, according to the release.

The driver of the red 2004 Dodge Neon, Howard Ackerson, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to injuries and died.

The driver of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Northern Command West Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating this crash.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West has investigated 21 fatal crashes in Northern Nevada resulting in 24 fatalities in 2024. Spokeswoman Kim Yoko Smith said the number reflects those investigated by highway patrol in the Reno, northern Nevada area. The year's fatalities data is preliminary and may change/be updated based on final investigation and coroner reports. Statewide fatality figures be found at zerofatalitiesnv.com.

Carson City Board of Supervisors to discuss water treatment project funding, new solar panel parking lots and more

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William St.

On the agenda:
— Supervisors will hear presentation on the 2024 Strategic Plan Annual Report, and will discuss aspects of the plan that are not feasible, and are requested to be closed or removed from the plan.

— ARPA funding for the Quill Water Treatment Plant Rehabilitation Project will be discussed, and the fact that the lowest bid for the project came in at approximately $6.9 million more than the available budget. $6.4 million is available to be funded from undesignated funds in the Water Fund, and an additional $500,000 in ARPA funding is being requested.

In addition, a discussion will be held regarding a determination that Farr Construction is the lowest responsive and responsible bidder for the Quill project, which carries a total amount of $22.8 million.

— Staff is requesting permission to submit a nomination form to NV Energy as part of the Expanded solar Access Program which, if approved, will utilize the Carson City Public Works Department employee parking area as an ESAP host site, constructing carports topped with solar panels, which will be constructed and managed entirely by NV Energy. Power generated by the project will provide bill credits that lower energy costs for ESAP participants including low-income residents, renters and small businesses.

— A discussion will be held regarding the city’s Community Development Block Grant annual performance and evaluation report, which is required to be submitted each year to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

— The Carson City Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife will provide their annual presentation on the Urban Wildlife subcommittee’s report.

— Supervisors will discuss purchasing temporary staff services for a full-time armed security guard to provide screening, patrols of the building and escorts to employee’s vehicles for 2025 at the courthouse. The department of Alternative Sentencing currently provides courthouse security utilizing part-time, retired law enforcement officers; however, these positions have been “very difficult” to retain and fill, according to staff, and due to the critical need for security at the courthouse, DAS is seeking authorization to use a private security company for temporary staffing.

— The Sheriff’s Office is requesting an interlocal contract between the city and the Nevada Department of Corrections for mutual aid assistance through 2028, at no cost to either party. This agreement would allow the sheriff’s office to render aid or be assisted by NDOC in the event of a major emergency, including holding each other’s respective inmates.

— Staff is requesting permission to submit a grant to the U.S. Department of Energy for $120,450 in federal funds to update temperature control systems int here buildings within the city’s corporate yard, and to replace 24 skylights on the community center and aquatic center. There is no required match from the city.

— The Children’s Museum is requesting a road closure of E. Ann Street on Oct. 18 for their Trunk or Treat. Staff is recommending asking for a $250 deposit to be used if the street is not ready to be opened again at 8 p.m., and overtime would be required of city staff.

Monday morning Davis Fire update: 85 percent contained, Mt. Rose Highway open

The Davis Fire is now 85 percent contained, having burned 5,824 acres, fire officials said in a Monday morning briefing.

Highlights: Firefighters made great progress over the last few days, allowing Mt. Rose Highway to reopen to the public Sunday.

With the opening of this road, please continue to travel with caution in the area for the safety of the public and the firefighters. Backhaul operations are being executed on the north and east sides of the fire, as crews remove equipment off the fireline. Sprinklers are being removed from the southern section of the fire, as the line becomes more secure. With firefighter safety in mind, operations will be done at a deliberate pace. With containment increasing to a considerable amount, firefighting resources are being reassigned to other wildfire incidents with greater need, so we are beginning to see a drop in numbers.

Weather: Widespread showers with isolated embedded thunderstorms are possible today, with a quarter to half inch of rain. The average max temperature will be 55 degrees, with a cold morning in the high thirties. Winds will be westward at 8-12 mph, with gusts up to 22 mph. This will result in diminished fire behavior with possible flash floods.

Closures: The USDA Forest Service has issued an emergency closure order on the Davis Fire. This closure is in place for the safety of both the firefighters and the public. The closure boundary runs along the Thomas Creek Road to the north, eastside of the Mt. Rose Wilderness and Forest boundaries to the west, Nevada State Route 877 (Franktown Road) to the south, and the Forest boundary to east (west of U.S. Interstate 580).

All roads, trails, and developed recreation sites on National Forest System lands in this area are closed this includes a small portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail that comes in and out of Tahoe Meadows. In cooperation with the Forest Service, the Washoe County Parks and Recreation has also closed their developed recreation sites and trails that are found in the closure area.
