The first novel ambush that caught my attention was described in the Odyssey, where Greek soldiers were able to take the city of Troy by hiding inside a giant horse parked at the city gates as an offering to the goddess Athena.

What a surprise those soldiers of Troy had when they laid down their weapons to cheer and hug that humongous Trojan Horse. I was ten years old when I first read that story, and did not trust a horse for several years after.

Some ambuscades do not fare as well as the Trojan Horse. Mark Twain describes such a failed episode in one of Fennimore Cooper’s books.

“Chingachgook is able to divert a stream and uncover moccasin tracks! He bends a sapling in the form of an arch over this narrow passage. The Indians hide in the arch and wait for a 90-foot scow, moving at one mile per hour. The first Indian that drops lands in the wheelhouse in the very stern of the scow. The other five have a full minute to drop and all five drop astern of the scow into the water!”

But all the skullduggery in recorded history pales compared to the most recent advance in electronic sabotage. Some evil mastermind figured out how to load pagers, walkie-talkies, and hand-held radios with explosives that when detonated, drop their users like stones.

So what will we weaponize next? How many different ways can we conceive to dispatch one another? Well, there is a more natural demobilizing weapon that is most effective, though often overlooked, and it’s called, a pun. A good pun, or better yet, a bad one, can become an epiphany to an innocent interloper, and upgrade his disposition without harming him.

So, my proposal is that all 195 countries in the world sign a treaty pledging to employ lighthearted puns in place of the heavier pursuits of war. This will cut the killing fields in half, and perhaps more, as there will be those lucky ones who will not try to understand a pun, and in feeling superior, will live a satisfied life ever after.

Now, if you doubt that this Ecumenical Pun Pledge will work, let us try a quick test on you, and find out if you don’t feel comforted, and above entertaining any thoughts of violence whatsoever.

There! You see? If you figured it out you will feel grateful and benign, and if you don’t care to figure it out, well, you will feel peerless, and too erudite to harbor any thoughts of cruelty for the balance of a long and productive life.

I shall spend tonight drawing up our Ecumenical Pun Pledge, and shall get it in the mail to 195 countries first thing in the (Drumroll Please!) mourning.

— For more than 35 years, in over 4,000 performances, columnist and Chautauquan McAvoy Layne has been dedicated to preserving the wit and wisdom of “The Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope,” Mark Twain. The plan, released earlier this month, was created using a diverse team of experts from two states and five counties, using experiences gained during past major wildfires.

The 185-page document is a "living document" intended to provide the public with critical information related to evacuations and will be updated periodically.

The teams involved all have jurisdictional responsibilities around Lake Tahoe and pulled together for this planning effort. The result is a robust and critically needed Regional Evacuation Plan for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Evacuation Plan can be viewed at: laketahoeregionalevacuationplan.pdf

The document is organized so that the evacuation information in the main body of the document applies to ALL parts of the Lake Tahoe Basin. There are seven annexes in the back of the document that provide more specific information that is only pertinent to the specific areas.

The Evacuation Plan emphasizes regional cooperation and collaboration in the event of a large wildfire that may occur in the future. Local emergency experts recognize that planning for a large wildfire that will require evacuations is a reality for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Fire, law, and emergency management partners are more prepared to manage these events as a result of this new Evacuation Plan.

The Evacuation Plan is open for a 60-day comment period ending on Nov. 20, 2024. Provost explores the history of one of the West’s most fascinating frontier regions in his new two-volume set on Virginia City and the Comstock Lode.

"Virginia City Then & Now" explores on Virginia City and the surrounding area through the lenses of cameras past and present, from the Comstock Era to the 21st century. The author uses hundreds of historical and contemporary photos to tell the story of the Comstock’s growth, decline and modern renaissance.

Images of saloons, mines, businesses, churches, and other landmarks are displayed side by side to illustrate how the region has changed over the years. Readers can witness the Comstock’s evolution from silver mining boomtown through years of neglect in the mid-20th century to its rebirth as a National Monument that draws thousands of visitors each year.

"The Comstock Chronicles: Sagebrush, Silver, and the Rise of Virginia City" tells the story of the biggest silver mining boom ever. It covers the period from 1850 to 1880, when silver was king. The author uses a chronological format to trace the development of Virginia City, Gold Hill, and the surrounding area, while touching on true tales of the intrigue and inspiration, comedy and tragedy that occurred along the way.

Larger-than-life figures share these pages with the thousands of miners and dreamers who came west looking to make their fortune. You’ll read about Mark Twain and Dan De Quille, pioneers of “sagebrush journalism”; about movers and shakers like William Sharon, George Hearst, and the tunnel-building Adolph Sutro; gunslingers like “Farmer Peel”; saloon owners, firefighters, and ladies of the evening.

"The Comstock Chronicles," with a foreword by respected historian, author, and journalist Richard Moreno, is the story of Nevada’s birth and unruly childhood: a story retold to preserve the memories of a time when the West was still wild and dreams were cast in silver.

A former editor, reporter, and columnist with more than 30 years of experience at daily newspapers, Carson City resident Stephen H. Provost is the author of more than 50 books, including several on Nevada history.

In addition to this new two-volume set, his works include "Goldfield Century," "Carson City Century," and "Mark Twain’s Nevada," as well as historical travelogues along "America’s Loneliest Road" (U.S. Highway 50), the "Bonanza Highway" (U.S. 95), "Victory Road" (Interstate 80), and the "Sierra Highway" (U.S. 395) in Nevada.

He is also the author of fantasy and science fiction novels, as well as the "Nightmare’s Eve" series of short-story collections with his wife, Sharon Marie Provost, on Dragon Crown Books. All his books are available on Amazon, and many are also available locally.
