The Nevada Day Parade in downtown Carson City on Saturday was filled with celebration, culture and camaraderie. Marching bands and local musicians brought rhythm to the streets and filled the air with music and dancing.

From Local nonprofits, schools and civic groups showcasing their missions and community involvement to local businesses and cultural groups. Cheering from the sidelines, friends and family celebrated the achievements of their loved ones , and showed a sense of community and belonging that made the parade special.

Douglas, Carson City fire crews rush to brush fire in Alpine View, Jacks Valley area

UPDATE 12:05PM: Jacks Valley Road has reopened and Douglas County is reporting all area roads are open except Bavarian Drive. Evacuations have been downgraded to a Precautionary Evacuation Warning. Go here for evacuation parameters.

UPDATE 11:30AM: Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which monitors fires in the region, reports forward fire progress has been stopped per incident command. The fire is estimated at around 3 acres. It is unknown at this time if any structures were damaged.

UPDATE 11:28AM: Evacuation orders have been issued for the vicinity of the fire in the Jacks Valley area of Alpine View Court and Bavarian Drive; Parameters may be viewed on the Perimeter Map here. Evacuees are requested to exit the area via Jacks Valley Road. See Douglas County social media page here for updates.

UPDATE: The alertwildfire.org camera shows less smoke in the area as of around 11:15 a.m. Multiple fire engines and brush crews have responded to the scene.

East Fork Fire and Carson City Fire Department responded Sunday morning to a brush fire in the area of Alpine View Court in the Jacks Valley area of Douglas County.

At around 10:20 a.m. firefighters were alerted to the fire and at around 10:30 a.m. Carson City was called for a mutual aid.

Details such has threats to structures are unknown at this time. Limited scanner traffic is alerting to possible evacuations. East Fork has requested help in shutting down Jacks Valley Road.

A reverse 911 alert has been initiated to the Alpine View area, according to scanner traffic and Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice.

Windy conditions are expected today.

Carson City area weather: Storm to bring gusty winds, valley rain and Sierra snow

An early-season storm will bring widespread gusty winds, valley rain around Carson City and surrounding counties and Sierra snow showers Sunday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm will blow in Sunday, with widespread southwest winds 25 mph to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and wind prone areas gusts 50-plus mph, with mountain ridge wind gusts 60 mph to 80 mph.

Valley rain will begin Sunday morning in far northwest Nevada, then into the I-80 corridor by Monday, NWS forecasters said, noting it will likely be a wet commute Monday into Tuesday morning.

Snow levels Sunday will be from 7,500 feet to 8,000 feet, dropping to 5,500 to 6,500 feet Monday to near all valley floors by Tuesday morning, according to the weather service.

Snow amounts will be 1 to 3 inches in the high Sierra, up to one inch at Lake Tahoe level, and a trace possible for lowest valleys by Tuesday morning, NWS forecasters said.

There are no watches or warnings issued at this time. There is a Lake Wind Advisory until 11 p.m. Sunday for the Lake Tahoe area and the Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.

The weather service advises people to secure loose outdoor decorations, furniture and clean leaves from gutters. Motorists are urged to take it slow while driving on ice and snow. See NVroads.com for the latest travel conditions.

Nevada Day 2024 beard contest winners, most bearded community goes to Carson City

As the 2024 Nevada Day Parade ended, the fun continued with the annual Nevada Day beard competition. Bob McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City buzzed with nearly two hours of excitement as the bearded showed off their best.

This was Perry Nixdorf’s and Starr Nixdorf’s ninth year running the Nevada Day Beard Contest. The sponsors of the beard contest are Nick Fontanez of Cipriani’s Downtown Barbershop, and Perry Nixdorf and Starr Nixdorf of Paradise Salon Spa Wellness and Spear Me.

The judges were Taylor Lynch (owner of Taylor’s Scissors ‘n’ Clippers), Nick Fontanez( owner of Cipriani‘s Downtown Barbershop) and Brian Halverson. All judges are professional local barbers.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, 2024. Closures and lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— 2nd Street between Carson Street and Curry Street will be closed to westbound traffic from April 8, 2024, to June 30, 2025, for construction.

— Bath Street between Nevada Street and Curry Street will be closed to thru traffic one day between Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

— Curry Street between King Street and 2nd Street will be closed to traffic on Friday, from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm.

— North Ormsby Boulevard between Newman Place and Washington Street will be closed from Oct. 1, 2024, to Nov. 8, 2024, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road/utility work:

— The intersection of Carmine Street and Lompa Lane will have flagger control from Tuesday to Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

— Center Drive near the intersection of Topsy Lane will be reduced to a single lane from Sept. 16, 2024, to Nov. 26, 2024, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

— Cortez Street between Goshute Way and Philippi Street will have lane shifts on Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Central Lyon Fire announces open burn season, transition to online permitting platform

Central Lyon Fire Protection District

Central Lyon Fire Protection District will begin open burning on Nov. 1, 2024, pending weather conditions. This decision aligns with fire safety protocols and mirrors burn permit restrictions in place by surrounding agencies, including the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), Fernley, Carson City and Storey County.

This year, Central Lyon Fire has partnered with the Western Fire Chiefs Association to introduce an online burn permitting platform. Effective immediately, all burn permits will be processed through the BeforeYouBurn app (when available) or website BeforeYouBurn.com, which can also be accessed through the Central Lyon Fire website at www.centrallyonfire.org. As part of this transition, paper burn permits will no longer be issued, and the burn line will no longer be operational.

We understand that this is a significant shift, and we appreciate the community's cooperation as we move toward this more streamlined and efficient system. The app/website is designed to simplify the process, making it easier for residents to manage their burn permits. QR codes will be available at all fire station entries, and informational flyers can be provided upon request.

For those unable to use the online system, assistance will be available at the Administration Office, located at 246 Dayton Valley Road, Suite 106, during regular business hours. Please note that this means paper permit holders will only be able to determine safe burn days during these hours, and weekend burning without online access will not be possible.

We encourage all residents to visit the website or download the app (when available) in preparation for the upcoming burn season. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve the process, we welcome your feedback.

It was a perfect day in Carson City for the hot air balloons to celebrate Nevada Day 2024. The air was crisp with a light breeze from the south. The balloons went off right on schedule and headed north, across the city. A couple were seen landing on, or near, Silver Oak Golf Course.

NEVADA DAY TREASURE HUNT – October 1st -31st

The Nevada Day Treasure Hunt is a time-honored tradition for many families throughout the silver state, who set their minds together to decipher clues metered out each day leading to the secret location of buried treasure: The Nevada Day Treasure Hunt Medallion, which was found, led to a $1,000 cash prize! (goes through October 31st or until medallion is found).

CARSON CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEVADA DAY EXHIBIT

Please join the Carson City Historical Society (CCHS) at the Foreman -Roberts House Museum, located at 1207 North Carson Street, every Sunday in October through October 27 th from 1:00pm – 3:00pm, for a Historic Nevada Day exhibit. CCHS welcomes guest speaker Mike Shaughnessy on October 24 th at 6:00pm in the Carriage House behind the museum. Mike, a native Nevadan, has lived in Carson City since 1937, and was in the first Nevada Day parade in 1938. Mike was the General Chairman for the parade for 16 years and was proud to be the Grand Marshall in 2013. Upon his retirement from the Nevada Day committee, Mike was named “Chairman Emeritus”, and subsequently became a “Member for Life” of the committee. The talk is free and open to the public. Nevada Day Powwow

The Nevada Day Powwow will run October 26, 27, and 28 with a Friday Grand Entry beginning at 7p.m., Grand Entry at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday at the MAC Center in Carson City NV. PANCAKE BREAKFAST AT THE GOVERNOR’S MANSION – 7am-9:30am

A Nevada Day tradition, the pancake breakfast at the Governor’s Mansion (606 N. Mountain St.) is hosted by the Carson City Republican Women’s Club and takes place from 7:00-9:30 a.m. on parade day. Cost is $7 for Adults and $3 for Kids 10 and younger. Proceeds go towards a scholarship of $2,000 to a deserving senior from Carson or Dayton High School. Breakfast includes: pancakes, eggs, ham, orange juice and coffee. The Governor is often available for photos. Thirty-five years running…again?! Well, no, we all took a year off, remember? 2020 was canceled, so let’s get back on track and celebrate the 35th in 2024! We are excited and thankful, as always, to put on one of our signature races and be part of the Nevada Day weekend! This is a classic road course through the streets of west Carson City. Costumes are HIGHLY encouraged! We love seeing the creativity and vast array of costumes that run the courses!

RE/MAX NEVADA DAY BALLOON LAUNCH – 8AM

Watch the majesty of hot air balloons launching right on Carson Street near the Carson Mall beginning at 8:00 a.m. on parade day (weather permitting). The balloons fly for about an hour and are usually down before the parade starts. The launch operates under the assistance of the Great Reno Balloon Race. Team RE/MAX flies their signature hot air balloon, along with many other balloons. Sponsors can ride in a balloon and hang their banner from the balloon’s basket.

NEVADA DAY VENDOR PLAZA – 8AM-4PM

Come support the official Nevada Day Vendors at the first ever Nevada Day Vendor Plaza. Located just behind McFadden Plaza (200 S Curry St.) form 8am-4pm on Saturday October 26th. The plaza is full of local Nevada artists, food trucks and local businesses.

FALL FEST AT THE CARSON NUGGET- 8am-3pm

Join us Saturday 10/26, for the 9th annual Northern Nevada Fall Fest. Shop local crafters, reps, and businesses. Food Trucks, food booths, Kettle Corn, Raffles, candy and more! In Arlington Square (507 N. Carson St) from 8 am- 3 pm.

NEVADA DAY PARADE – 10AM

The military fly-over will signal the start of the parade, which begins at William Street and N. Carson Street, and ends 4 hours later at the intersection of Stewart Street and S. Carson Street. The parade features marching bands, floats, equestrian groups, historical displays, Burning Man art cars, and much more. View a list of parade entries in the parade program or Carson Now online.

THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLE JACK DRILLING CONTEST – 11AM

The World Championship Single Jack Rock Drilling Contest takes place on Sat., Oct. 26, 2024 at the Carson Mall Parking lot on Carson St. The competition begins around 11:00 a.m. Men and Women contestants use 4 1/2 pound hammers and a 3/4” bit of steel to drill as deep and as fast as they can in a 4,320 pound piece of Sierra White Granite from the Yosemite area (the hardest known granite in the region). Contestants have 10 minutes to pound the drills into the solid stone, their only help is from an assistant who runs water into the hole so the loose stone chips are splashed out with every stroke of the hammer. The deepest hole wins.The contest goes back to the Comstock mining skills of earlier times, when blast holes for dynamite were punched into ore bodies by hand. Contestants vie for a chance at a World Champion title.

NEVADA DAY BEARD CONTEST — 2PM

Hosted by Cipriani’s Downtown Barber Shop and Paradise Salon – Spa – Wellness. Held immediately following the parade, the Beard Contest takes place on the main stage at McFadden Plaza (3rd St.) There is no entry fee, the contest is open to anyone with a beard. Award categories include: best overall winner, longest, fullest, reddest, whitest, blackest, best salt and pepper, best groomed, scruffiest, and most bearded community.

USAF MOBILITY BAND PERFORMANCE- Approximately 2:30 PM

Carson City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 7-member USAF Mobility Band that will begin their show on Saturday, 10/26, at approximately 2:30 pm on the McFadden Plaza Stage. They are a part of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West stationed at Travis Air Force Base and a high energy rock band that have become very popular in Carson City. This is their third appearance to help celebrate Nevada’s most popular holiday tradition. They also will be on the Fleet Reserve Association float to play during the parade.

NEVADA TEA FESTIVAL Classes start at 10am Exhibit hall at 12PM

Held in Carson City’s Casino Fandango, the Nevada Tea Festival is set for Oct. 26th. Classes begin at 10:00AM Exhibit Hall opens at 12:00PM Come and listen to tea expert’s lectures and taste the best quality teas. Visit the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum on Saturday, October 26. The cultural center and museum will be open from 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a beading demonstration from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. by Dale Bennett, Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, who attended Stewart Indian School from 1969-1973. The current exhibit in the Great Basin Native Artists Gallery is Creating Stories: Artwork of the Stewart Alumni curated by Melissa Melero-Moose (Fallon Paiute/Modoc) . This exhibition features paintings, drawings, basketry, and more made by former students of the school. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division is seeks information to identify the suspect in a battery investigation where a disabled veteran was allegedly struck with his own cane by the suspect.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9,2024, a battery occurred involving an unknown suspect and elderly, disabled veteran in the area of Carson and Bath Street.

The suspect is alleged to have struck the victim with his own cane. Throughout the course of the Investigation, a picture of a suspect and vehicle has been obtained, according to the sheriff's office in a news release.

The suspect is a Hispanic male, approximately 30 to 40 years of age. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, black short and black shoes. The suspect is associated with a gray Nissan SUV.

Suspects sought by Carson City sheriff's investigators in recent theft of go-karts

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division seeks information to identify the suspects in a grand larceny investigation involving the theft of go-karts.

On Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, three unknown suspects stole two Go-Karts in the area of William Street and Gold Dust Way in Carson City Throughout the course of the investigation, a picture of a suspect and suspect vehicles was obtained. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark Nike sweatshirt along with dark jeans and grey Nike tennis shoes.

The top election official in politically crucial Washoe county says she was forced out

The top election official in one of the nation's most politically important counties said Wednesday she was forced out of her role just weeks before the November presidential election, disputing an official statement that she asked for a leave after experiencing "stress issues."

The abrupt departure of Cari-Ann Burgess as the interim registrar of voters in northern Nevada's Washoe County one month ago is the latest sign of turmoil in a county that has been roiled for four years by people pushing election conspiracy theories. Washoe, which includes Reno, is a swing county in a state where this year's presidential contest is expected to be narrowly decided.

Burgess told The Associated Press in an interview that she had refused personnel changes sought by the county manager's office and had offered to step down and return to her prior position as deputy. She said she was told that was not possible.

In a meeting with county staff, including representatives of the district attorney's office, Burgess said she was forced to put a request for leave in writing despite her desire to stay.

“ I feel like I was absolutely forced out, but I have no idea how we got to this point," Burgess said in her first public remarks since her departure. "Because the previous Friday and Monday, before I was put on leave, I was having high praises. They were like, 'You're doing a great job, you've got this, you're the best person for this job because you brought this team together.'

"And then all of a sudden, I was out on leave."

Burgess said she has hired a lawyer and was considering her legal options.

In a Sept. 27 statement, Washoe County spokeswoman Bethany Drysdale said Burgess had "experienced stress issues and requested medical leave." Washoe County Manager Eric Brown told commissioners during an Oct. 8 meeting that Burgess was on leave and that she had not been fired and had not quit.

George Guthrie, a spokesman for the county election office, on Wednesday reiterated the county's previous statement that Burgess had requested a leave and that the county was committed to "running a smooth and fair election."

Nevada is one of seven presidential battleground states that Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are hotly contesting ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election.

Washoe is the state's second most populous county and is considered a bellwether because its elections are often narrowly decided and its vote can tip statewide elections. Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, has voted solidly Democratic in the past two presidential elections.

A deputy filling in for Burgess is now the fifth person in four years to oversee elections in the politically mixed county. The staff has turned over entirely since the 2020 presidential election, Burgess said.

A spokeswoman for the Nevada Secretary of State's Office declined to comment about the situation in Washoe County.

Across the country, conspiracy theories and lies about the 2020 presidential election have created a difficult working environment for local election officials, who have faced harassment and even death threats. That has prompted election officials nationwide to prepare for what could be a tumultuous election, providing panic buttons for polling place supervisors and installing bulletproof glass at their offices.

In Reno, county government meetings are often prolonged by members of the public who opposed Burgess' hiring as the interim registrar in January and who want the county to hand-count votes because they don't trust voting equipment. They also want election staff to do more to combat voter fraud, even though there is no evidence of any widespread fraud or manipulated voting equipment in 2020 or afterward.

After the state primary earlier this year, the county commission's Republican majority voted 3-2 against certifying the results. They later reversed course, but Burgess said the initial vote hurt morale among her team at the election office.

Commissioner Jeanne Herman, a Republican who has consistently voted against certifying election results since 2020, said news of Burgess' departure came as a surprise. Herman told the AP Wednesday that state GOP officials had met with Burgess for two hours to talk about their concerns shortly before Burgess went on leave.

"They came away thinking, 'Great, our election might just turn out OK,'" she said. "Then all of a sudden she was gone."

Burgess said the changes requested of her by county administrators involved assigning some election office staffers to a different department while keeping them working inside the office.

"I wouldn't have any say in what they were doing. And I said no to that," she said.

She tried to return after being placed on leave, obtaining a doctor's note indicating she was fine to work, but county officials refused and told her the situation would be taken up after the presidential election. She said she has been forced to use her sick pay and vacation time, and was told not to contact her staff or speak with reporters.

"I wanted to stay and help this team," Burgess said. "They have done so much and have done such amazing things in the last year that — yeah, I wanted to be part of it. And I wanted to help them, and they told me no."

Carson City Judge Melanie Bruketta Builds Expertise at National Judicial College

Judge Melanie Bruketta recently completed the Special Court Jurisdiction: Advanced program, an intensive two-week course designed for judges at the National Judicial College.

The immersive course aims to provide judges with a solid foundation in courtroom leadership, judicial ethics, evidence, case management, judicial security, and decision-making. Graduates can earn credit hours toward a Master of Judicial Studies degree.

“For many judges, the transition from bar to bench is very swift, and there is no ‘how-to guide’ available,” Judge Benes Z. Aldana (Ret.), president of the National Judicial College, said. “Judges must be lifelong learners and build a network of relationships with other judges they can reach out to on a regular basis. We were pleased to welcome Judge Bruketta to the College and hope we can continue to serve as a resource throughout her judicial career.”

During the Special Court Jurisdiction: Advanced course, judges learn from top faculty recruited from the judiciary and subject matter experts from around the country. In addition to classroom-style learning, the course frequently breaks into small discussion groups that allow judges to have in-depth conversations and work through issues currently before them.

“I appreciate the opportunity to learn from my peers and look forward to sharing the knowledge and skills acquired with those who appear in the Carson City Justice/Municipal Court Department 2,” Judge Bruketta said.

Judge Bruketta’s attendance at the course was supported by the Carson City Justice/Municipal Court. Judge Bruketta was appointed to the bench in August 2024 to fill the unexpired term of Judge Kristin Luis, who was appointed by Governor Joe Lombardo to serve as a District Court Judge in the First Judicial District Court.

Judge Bruketta was elected in the 2024 Primary Election to serve a six-year term beginning in January 2025. She is a Justice of the Peace and Municipal Court Judge in Carson City, Nevada.

Las Vegas Raiders to participate in Nevada Day parade, VIPs enjoy Carson City tour

Yesterday, Raiders VIPs were given a tour of Carson City, including the historic west side. They were joined by Mayor Lori Bagwell, City Manager Nancy Paulson and other city representatives.
