Meet Ziggy.

Approximately a year old, Ziggy’s life has been one tragedy after another. We hope to change that by finding him the perfect home that will give him the life and love he needs and deserves for the rest of his days.

A short-haired tabby boy, Ziggy was discarded as a tiny baby with the rest of his litter in a Starbucks dumpster. Part of the litter was killed by trash thrown on top of them. Finally discovered and rescued, he and his brother went to live with a family where he was very loved.

One night the family dog attacked Ziggy. Luckily the owner was able to save him before he was badly hurt or killed. Later the family fell on hard times and contacted Catmandu. We took him in, got him neutered and vaccinated. Ziggy has an extremely mild case of wobbly cat syndrome (cerebellar hypoplasia). He high steps like a show pony and is a little on the clumsy side.

Otherwise, he is delightful, sweet and lovable. He gets around fine and has no litter box or other issues. His condition will never worsen and he should have a completely normal lifespan.

Despite all that has happened to Ziggy, he is so very sweet. He likes to play, and has an adorable little chirp. We at Catmandu have fallen deeply in love with this wonderful boy.

Ziggy seems to be okay with other friendly, mellow cats. He dreams of a quiet, loving and safe home with no dogs and no small children. We would love to see him in a home where he will be the only cat and will be spoiled rotten for the rest of his life.

Please visit our website at Catmanducc.org to see a brief video of him being his adorable little self. If you think you might be the perfect home for this special boy, please complete a pre-adoption application on our website at CatmanduCC.org/adoptions and plan to visit him this weekend at Catmandu, 1829 Brown Street. Potential adopters are welcome Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4 pm. Dixie paddleboat, exploring the vital importance of water and environmental stewardship with the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC).

For many students, this trip marked their first experience on a boat. Eighth grade teacher Christien Clark acknowledged the trip’s importance, saying, “This is a great opportunity to get the kids on the boat and out in the Tahoe environment, learning by connecting with Tahoe.”

Cruises allowed students to engage with Lake Tahoe while learning about water issues and natural history. During the voyage, they tasted and voted on tap versus bottled water, facilitated by the South Tahoe Public Utility District, and explored the unique properties of water with the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Students interacted with various local organizations, handling giant sugar pinecones and practicing home hardening with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue. They learned to identify and prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and League to Save Lake Tahoe.

“My favorite station was the Sugar Pine Foundation. Learning about them and how to save them was very fun,” shared Frankie Franchini, South Tahoe Middle School student.

On the upper deck, students soaked in the sunshine while learning about the geological history of Lake Tahoe with the USDA Forest Service. With stunning views surrounding them, they explored Tahoe's mammals and birds with the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science.

“Bringing over 500 students aboard was magical,” said Lauren Benefield, event organizer and water conservation specialist at the South Tahoe Public Utility District. “Thank you, Aramark, for your generous donation of these two cruises. With decreased funding available, support for these types of initiatives helps keep our students connected to the wonders of their natural environment.”

STEEC is a collaborative network of more than 20 local agencies and organizations with an aligned mission to bring environmental education resources to Lake Tahoe youth. Learn more about STEEC.
News Fri, 11 Oct 2024 01:15:42 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 132776 at https://www.carsonnow.org Carson Tahoe Hospital Birth Announcements for Sept. 24 - Oct. 3, 2024 https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/10/2024/carson-tahoe-hospital-birth-announcements-sept-24-oct-3-2024
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/10/2024/carson-tahoe-hospital-birth-announcements-sept-24-oct-3-2024" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Staff Reports

Here are the recent births that occurred at Carson Tahoe Hospital between Sept. 24 and Oct. 3, 2024.

Camila Gomez-Vilchis, a baby girl, was born Sept. 24 to Zuleima Rubeo-Vilchis and Victor Gomez-Bueno of Gardnerville.

Kamiliana Tara Quintero, a baby girl, was born Sept. 28 to Mya Murphy and Dempsey Quintero of Schurz, Nev.

Mia Quynh Hua, a baby girl, was born Sept. 30 to Krista Hua and David Hua of Carson City.

Robin Grace Bates, a baby girl, was born Sept. 30 to Amanda Bates and Cole Bates of Carson City.

Violet Solorzano, a baby girl, was born Oct. 1 to Mary Mullins and Ivan Solorzano of Carson City.

Ezra Josue Rodriguez Crawford, a baby boy, was born Oct. 1 to Celia Rodriguez and Jose Rodriguez Flores of Carson City.

Miley Grace Teixeira, a baby girl, was born Oct. 1 to Iris-Sofia Teixeira and Anthony Teixeira of Carson City.

Brian Lane Stanton III, a baby boy, was born Oct. 2 to Katie McGuire and Brian Stanton Jr. of Dayton.

Rhett Harrison Jace Gledhill, a baby boy, was born Oct. 3 to Hailey Lemire Gledhill and Jace Gledhill of Carson City.

All information is courtesy of Carson Tahoe Hospital.
News Thu, 10 Oct 2024 22:37:37 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 132775 at https://www.carsonnow.org All for Our Country: Nevada’s True State Motto and this year’s Nevada Day Parade theme https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/10/2024/all-our-country-nevada-s-true-state-motto-and-year-s-nevada-day-parade-theme
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/10/2024/all-our-country-nevada-s-true-state-motto-and-year-s-nevada-day-parade-theme" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

by Kelsey Penrose

While some may believe that Nevada’s state motto may be Battle Born, this is a common misconception. Battle Born is a saying that came from the fact that the statehood of Nevada was ratified at the end of the Civil War, which gave President Abraham Lincoln the votes he needed to free slaves in the doomed confederacy and across the nation.

The true motto of Nevada is “All for Our Country,” which, interestingly, was born out of the same circumstances as the more often used Battle Born.

Prior to Nevada reaching statehood, the Territory of Nevada had its own seal and motto, and as the soon-to-be state prepared for ratification, the Constitutional Convention came together to formalize everything from what was on the seal to what Nevada would stand for.

The previous territory motto was Volens et Potens, a latin phrase meaning Willing and Able, which was then replaced by All for Our Country.

There is no recorded history of the reasoning behind choosing All for Our Country, but it is undeniably a pro-Union sentiment. The much wordier motto of The Union Must and Shall be Preserved was considered during the National Convention of 1863.

Without the civil war, and Lincoln’s re-election, Nevada would not have been allotted its statehood – at least, not in 1864. The state held an overwhelmingly pro-Union stance, especially considering that for many boomtowns, African-Americans were not only free citizens, but there was very little segregation. In Virginia City, for example, Black students attended the Fourth Ward school alongside White students without issue.

Both the state seal and the more-often used Battle Born – which flies on every Nevada state flag – were formalized during the second National Convention of 1864. Soon after, Nevada was officially introduced into the Union as the 36th state.

Keep an eye out for the official Nevada Day Magazine being handed out on parade day along the parade route for this and other stories!
Community Thu, 10 Oct 2024 21:25:45 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 132774 at https://www.carsonnow.org More questions about Carson City ballots: sample ballots, non-existent drop-off locations and more https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/10/2024/more-carson-city-ballot-questions-sample-ballots-non-existent-drop-locations-and-mo
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/10/2024/more-carson-city-ballot-questions-sample-ballots-non-existent-drop-locations-and-mo" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

by Kelsey Penrose

Press releases from the city and state have been issued regarding the recent issue on the Carson City official ballots, which mistakenly listed a member of the IAP as a Democrat.

However, Carson City voters have continued to ask: Where are the sample ballots?

While new official mail-in ballots will be sent out, there is no word on when the sample ballots will be arriving.

Some people may be under the impression that ballots come from the Secretary of State’s office, but this is not the case. All ballots, sample and official, must come through each County Clerk’s office before they are distributed to voters.

According to County Clerk-Recorder Scott Hoen, who answered questions via email through Carson City Public Information Officer Cameron Gresh, sample ballots are printed by Nevada State Printing after they are sent off by the Clerk-Recorder department. Hoen did not mention what date sample ballots were sent to the printers, which is located in Carson City.

Hoen said there was a “period of time” they had to wait for the Secretary of State to confirm whether candidates were on or off the ballot.

“RFK Jr. was one that was on the ballot and then we had to take him off,” Hoen said. “Jill Stein was on the ballot, and then we had to take her off. Douglas County put out their sample ballot with Stein on the ballot that had to be fixed. We waited to make sure the candidates listed were correct.”

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Sept. 20, 2024 that Stein could not appear on Nevadan’s ballot due to a Secretary of State blunder.

“Bottom line is that we waited to the last minute to put out the sample ballot to ensure the correct candidates were listed,” Hoen said.

The arrival of the mail ballot before the sample ballot was a “timing issue” as mail official ballots were shipped from Washington state through Reno, Hoen said, which allowed the mail ballots to arrive prior to the sample ballots.

However, Hoen did not immediately provide a date on when sample ballots would be arriving.

When asked how an error could have been made, Hoen said that “staff in the Clerk-Recorder’s office work on proofing the ballots."

“Ultimately, a mistake was made, and the Clerk-Recorder takes full responsibility and apologizes for the error,” Hoen said. “It was an error that no one caught before materials were sent to the printer. Additional processes are being set up to correct the situation and prevent errors in the future. In-person voting is not affected by this, and we expect a big turnout with early voting and election day.”

When pressed on whether that meant Hoen himself does not proofread the ballots, Hoen said that is not the case. Both he and staff members proofread the ballots prior to them being sent to the printers.

When asked about the process of how ballots are created, Hoen said that due to the ongoing election, they couldn’t provide information on how ballots are created, but could do so after the election is over.

Another issue voters have pointed out is that two new ballot-drop locations listed on the “secrecy sleeve” provided with the mail-in ballots do not appear to exist.

There are four locations listed: The Carson City Community Center, City Hall, Stewart Wellness Center, and Carson Elder Center.

However, Stewart Wellness Center and Carson Elder Center do not appear to exist.

In addition, early voting and election day locations are listed in the sample ballot as “Carson Colony” and “Stewart Colony.” While “Carson Colony” is reported to be open during early voting, “Stewart Colony” is not available. Election Day hours also differentiate, stating that voting in “Carson Colony” runs from 7 a.m. to noon, while “Stewart Colony” runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

However, there is no Stewart Colony; there is the Carson Colony, which is a census designated area west of 395 in South Carson, and there is the Stewart Community, which is situated around the Stewart Indian School Museum and Cultural Center.

In addition, in the sample ballot while the other locations are listed as buildings (Community Center, City Hall, etc.), there is no building listed within the Carson Colony or Stewart Community.

Since there are no addresses listed for any of the polling locations, this could cause significant issues for residents of the reservations attempting to locate their polling locations.

We will update with these answers when they are available.
Nevada Politics Thu, 10 Oct 2024 18:24:03 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 132773 at https://www.carsonnow.org Political funds: Campaign contributions reports for local Carson City candidates https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/09/2024/political-funds-campaign-contributions-reports-local-carson-city-candidates
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/10/09/2024/political-funds-campaign-contributions-reports-local-carson-city-candidates" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

by Kelsey Penrose

All campaigns run on donations, from major presidential elections to local school boards. I'm Tic Tac, a 9-year-old pup still discovering the world one sniff at a time. I wandered into the Nevada Humane Society as a stray, but these wonderful folks have turned things around for me. I'm all about making new friends, whether they're two-legged or four. I've got plenty of love to give and would make the perfect companion for someone who enjoys a laid-back lifestyle with a sprinkle of fun. Plus, I've packed my bags and am ready to go—no adoption fee needed! Come say hi; I can't wait to meet you!”

Tic Tac is residing at our Carson City campus located at 549 Airport Road in Carson City. We’re open Tuesday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Tic Tac, like many of our seniors, has a waived adoption fee and is of course neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and SO ready to go home!
