Lyon County Utilities to conduct water main flushing in Dayton's Rose Peak area

In a systematic approach to improve water quality, Lyon County Utilities will be conducting water main flushing Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14-15 in the Rose Peak area (roughly between Flowery Avenue and Sheep Camp Road) in Dayton, Nev.

During this process, sediment that has collected on the bottom of the water mains may be stirred up causing discolored water. The sediment in the water is the result of the minerals that have settled to the bottom of the water mains during the year. The sediment is not harmful.

Please check the water in your washing machine prior to doing laundry to be sure it is running clear as the discolored water may stain light-colored clothing. You may also experience intermittent low water pressure or no pressure during this time.

Allow for 4-6 hours upon completion of flushing for water to clear up. If after this time it has not cleared, please contact Lyon County Utilities at (775) 246-6220. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

The 2nd annual Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival is returning May 17-19 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville. This is a free community event that benefits the Center for Hope and Healing.

“The Center has worked to support grieving families for the past 12 years, to start the healing process as they navigate the loss of their loves ones,” a spokesperson for the event wrote. “With the help of our community, the Center for Hope and Healing is proud to offer peer support groups, free of charge, to children, teens, adults and families in Douglas, Carson, Lake Tahoe and surrounding communities.”

In addition to a number of balloons, there are several food trucks, entertainment, craft vendors, non-profit booths, and much more!

There are dozens of vendors, performers and booths, all of which can be viewed here.

Friday

On Friday, May 17 the fun begins at Lampe Park at 5 a.m. with the opening of the park, and at 6 a.m. the national anthem will be sung followed by the Flag Balloons Launch.

at 6:15 a.m., the rest of the balloons will begin to launch carrying media, veterans and first responders.

The “Fire it Up, Carson Valley!” event begins at 6 p.m. Friday at Lampe Park with the opening of food trucks and vendor booths which will remain open until 10 p.m.

Balloon pilots will begin arriving around 6:45 p.m. for a public meet and greet, and at 7:30 p.m., pilots will prepare baskets to “fire it up!” candlestick and chip shot style.

Saturday
The park will open again at 5 a.m. with food trucks on site from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Arts, crafts and food booths will open at 5:30 a.m. and will also be on site until 3 p.m.

The national anthem and flag balloons launch will take place at 6 a.m., followed by the rest of the balloons launching at 6:15 a.m.

From 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., experience tethered balloons, performers and entertainment throughout the day!

Sunday

The park will open at 5 a.m. and food trucks will be on site from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The national anthem and flag balloons launch will take place at 6 a.m. followed by the rest of the balloons launching at 6:15 a.m.

Weather permitting, tethered balloons will be available at 7:30 a.m.

Cops and Kids on Saturday gives families chance to connect with Carson City Sheriff's Office

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Law enforcement and community organizations set up booths along East Musser Street to provide fun, interactive and educational activities and games for children and families, helping them connect with the agencies, while also promoting positive relationships between law enforcement and the community as a whole,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Open House was started by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong as part of the community policing efforts implemented by his administration and has grown into a highly anticipated community event for children and their families.

The event each year is vital to the relationships between the sheriff’s office and the community, said Furlong.

“The relationship that our children have with our officers is critical to our environment, especially in our schools,” Furlong said. “That relationship is being built with our School Resource Officers but that extends to all the other officers along with the resources we have available through our partnerships with nonprofits such as Ron Wood, the Boys and Girls Club, and more. This is a single spot for parents to bring kids meet officers and meet the nonprofits that serve our community.”

Various law enforcement departments including the K9 Unit, SWAT, traffic, and detectives will be available and children will have the opportunity to engage with patrol cars, SWAT vehicles, patrol cars, and more.

Nevada State Police identify northern California man who died in I-80 crash in Fernley

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.

Joshua Fitzgerald, a 31-year-old man from Mount Shasta, Calif., died from injuries from the crash that happened April 16. He died later on April 24, according to Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a gray 2013 Dodge Ram was traveling eastbound on the IR80 in the far left (number one) travel lane near Mile Marker 53.

The driver of the Dodge Ram steered to the right causing the Dodge to travel from the number one travel lane through the number two travel lane. The Dodge overturned multiple times and came to rest on its roof between the two travel lanes.

An orange 2024 Freight-liner towing an enclosed trailer was traveling eastbound on IR80 near mile marker 53 in the number two travel lane.

The Freightliner attempted to avoid the overturned Dodge by braking and left steering. The front right of the Freightliner struck the side of the Dodge. The Dodge rotated clockwise and came to rest on its roof facing southbound in the right shoulder dirt area. The Freightliner came to rest in the far left (number one) travel lane.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, Joshua Fitzgerald, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. Fitzgerald died of his injuries on April 24, 2024.

Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Northern Command West M.I.R.T (Multidisciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team) is investigating this crash.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West has investigated 8 fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities thus far in 2024.

Carson High School to host first Art Expo featuring student work

Carson High School will host its First Annual Art Expo, showcasing the talents of its student artists in photography, graphic design, drawing, painting and ceramics Thursday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m.

In addition to viewing and appreciating the incredible artwork, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from graduating seniors who will be receiving a Fine Arts seal for visual arts on their diploma. The students will offer short presentations beginning at 6:30 p.m., sharing their inspiration and process behind their pieces.

Following the public opening, students and employees will have the chance to view the artwork during school hours the following week. This is an opportunity for the entire school community to come together and celebrate the creativity and talent of these young artists.

The Art Expo would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the art teachers at Carson High School including Mrs. Ababio, Mrs. Kuniya, Mrs. McCraw, Mr. Theilen and Mrs. Wacker. Their guidance and support have helped to nurture and develop the artistic abilities of their students.

Carson City sheriff's deputies make arrests for carrying concealed knife, warrants

A 40-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of carrying a concealed knife without a permit, a gross misdemeanor offense, and misdemeanor disturbing the peace, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

According to the report, a deputy responded to the area of East William and I-580 regarding a subject brandishing a knife.

The man had a knife in his possession and frightened a female at a crosswalk. He didn't threaten the female with the knife but startled her with the way he was holding it, the report states. Dispatch advised the man was on William Street waving a large knife around. He held up traffic briefly, and waved the knife while he was walking, the report states.

Officers located the man, who has a history of mental health problems. He continued walking, refusing to stop. The man then dropped the knife on a pile of items and continued walking. Other officers arrived and a perimeter was formed. He was located and placed into handcuffs.

According to the report, he rambled words and appeared to be disoriented due to mental health issues. He had in his possession multiple concealed weapons in his pockets, including a kitchen knife, a 10-inch nail spike, garden sheers and an empty bottle of sulfuric acid. Total bail amount listed, $3,637.

In other arrests:
— A 29-year-old woman was booked into Carson City Jail for four felony warrants out of Carson City and Lyon County.

Cristina Jurez was taken into custody after being transported to Carson City from a jail where she was previously in custody. The warrants for failure to appear. No bail hold for the Carson City warrant, $5,000 for the warrants out of Lyon County.

— A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for a misdemeanor outside agency warrant issued out of Dayton Township. Bail: $280 cash.

— A 49-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for a misdemeanor department of alternative sentencing violation. He had a "no alcohol" clause. He provided a preliminary breath test of .393. He was arrested for DAS violation. Bail: $3,000 cash.

— A 31-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Monday for a misdemeanor warrant alleging violation of a suspended sentence. Bail: $3,000.

Sierra area fishing report: Spring brings plenty of opportunities, plus kids fishing derby

Hello fellow anglers. Depending on where you were for the opening day season, the waters were high on the rivers and some lakes still had not iced out yet. But yet the strangest thing about it was. There were about half of the expected anglers that ventured out. I noticed the campgrounds were only half full.

But then we did have some of that early season crazy weather that is just like this week. Snow last weekend, and here we are up in the 80's this weekend. Now before we get to our fishing report, I want to remind all about the Free Kids Fishing Derby that is returning to Lampe Park in Gardnerville June 1-2.

The derby is free to all kids aged 3 to 12 years old. There will also be a session on Saturday at 2:30 for special needs children (adults) for all ages with disabilities. This means there will be no age limit for participants in this session. There is pre-registration needed to participate in the derby.

But as in past years, no child will be turned away. To register, you can stop by A J Stove's 1267 Highway 395 in Gardnerville, Nev. Or at Accolades Trophies at 1532 Highway 395 Gardnerville.

The other option is to go on the derby website at DCNVKidsFishingDerby.org. There you can view the time and dates for each session, print out a registration form for the kids as well as register to become a volunteer for this great two-day event.

Also a reminder that the Kids Fishing Derby inc. is a non-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Nevada, is exempt under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and contributions to the Derby are tax deductible. A win-win for all. Each child that participates will be allowed a 2 fish limit, and given a special gate prize. Additional prizes will be awarded for the big fish winners of each session, as well as for any tagged fish caught throughout the derby.

Raffle tickets are available at AJ's stoves and Accolades Trophies as well as during the derby for $2 each, or 6 for $10. This year's grand prizes include a tandem fishing kayak, a trip for 4 with Tahoe Sportfishing or a gift certificate for $300 from Sportsmans Warehouse. Now for your fishing report.

CAPLES LAKE: The lake is now showing some open waters along the edges. No more ice fishing for this season. But if you haven't seen it yet. go to ABC10 Youtube channel for Bartells Backroads to see how we pulled a 10 pound mac through an 8 inch hole. The area received 18 inches of snow last weekend so use caution along the edges of the lake. The Caples Lake Resort is open for cabin and lodge room rentals. When the lake thaws a little more around the edges is a great time to throw some flies or a small gold Kastmaster for those larger feeding browns and macs. WOODS LAKE: Sill closed due to snow.

RED LAKE: The lake is thawing fast and has some thin areas around the edge. Ice fishing is over for the season.

BURNSIDE LAKE: Road is closed due to snow.

BLUE LAKES: As of this week. The road is still closed at the first gate.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: The campground is closed. I talked with BLM and they have removed the damaged trees from the fire. They are working on the electrical and water lines right now, then to the reconstruction of the restrooms. There is a possibility they may open later in the season. But they are asking everyone to stay out of the campground area due to safety concerns. The CDFW planted the lake with catchable rainbow trout. Anglers have reported doing well with Powerbait or inflated nightcrawlers.

CARSON RIVER WEST FORK ALPINE COUNTY: The water was running at 300 cfm and the fishing was good too slow. Most anglers were using night crawlers with a small pinch weight. Small spinners have also produced some nice fish.

CARSON RIVER EAST FORK ALPINE COUNTY: On the opener I saw a few angler with rainbows up to 4 pounds. The average fish were in the 14 to 16 inch range. Most were caught on a nightcrawler ro power eggs and a couple pinch weights. The river was running at 1050 cfm and calmed down a little to 825 cfm as of this week. The water is stained but still has a good bit of clarity.

Bradley and Chloe Brubaker from Orangevale, Calif., caught a nice 2.5 lb rainbow in front o the Carson River Resort using a nightcrawler. Fishing has been good along the river from Hangman's Bridge to the second bridge. For more information or to get your picture taken for this report, stop by the Carson River Resort.

MARKLEEVILLE CREEK: The river was running high on the opener but has calmed down a little. Two anglers I talked with caught trout up to 6 lbs using a pinch weight and mice tails.

SILVER CREEK: The river has settled down and was running about 300 cfm with clarity. I spoke to a couple anglers that fished with salmon eggs and caught a few nice trout in the 13 to 15 inch class.

TOPAZ LAKE: The lake level has started to come down a few feet over the last week or two. Fishing has been good for early morning anglers trolling flashers followed by a worm or a #1 needlefish lure. Some anglers have just been trolling a Panther Martin or a Roostertail behind the boat. When you troll spinners, I recommend using a small ball bearing snap swivel so as not to twist your line. A regular snap swivel will not work as well. Shore anglers have done fair on the California side using green or salmon peach powerbait. The east side by the Douglas County campground area still has most of its real estate under water.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR: The lake level is up and the fishing has been good for shore and boat anglers. Many anglers have been anchoring up at rainbow point with nightcrawlers. While other anglers have been trolling rapalas on the south end of the lake. Many limits of rainbows have been coming out, but I have not heard of any browns being caught as yet. The Bridgeport Marina is open for RV and tent camping and boat rentals and launching. I talked with Chase Pasley from the Marina a few weeks ago, and he has been hard at work extending power to most of the camp areas on the lake side of the campground. JUNE LAKE AREA REPORT: Having fished here just once on Opener we don’t have a track record to gauge how it’ll fish in the coming days and weeks. So, for what it’s worth.We got 12 that day including a couple Cutthroats with one at 18” while using a variety of floating baits and some lure tossing. Those baits include (as they do throughout the season) Salmon Peach and Garlic (that’s the light green that’s simply named Garlic) Powerbait, Mice Tails, Garlic Pinched Crawlers, and a nightcrawler under a bobber. After trying them all early the Garlic Powerbait turned out to work the best. That’s what you want to do. Try several types and usually one becomes the go to which can change from day to day.

Fish stockings: Fish and Wildlife typically stocks the June Lake Loop Lakes every other week in May and increases to every week after Memorial Day as long as all their hatcheries are operating. Along with those, additional stockings of larger Rainbow Trout from Oregon are put in by Mono County, the June Lake Loop Monster Trout Fund, and the Marinas prior to Opener and major Summer holiday weekends.

Upper Owens River above Benton crossing: Big Cutthroats have started to move up from Lake Crowley this week. Not too many yet but a good start to what we hope is a good run peaking mid-month. Until the numbers increase these rascals are tough to fish as they make their way up.

Our approach is to work upstream in the morning nymph fishing the deep bends and cut banks for any Cutts that may stop to rest or feed. During this we’re getting smaller Browns and Rainbows and also seeing what those big Cutts are up to.

When those numbers hopefully come up we continue nymphing in the morning then switch to streamers in the afternoon casting downstream in the shallower runs while avoiding the actively spawning Cutthroats. Or we’ll throw on a Caddis or BWO to get some smaller browns and rainbows.

Carson City yoga center invites community to second Self-Care Wellness Fair

Following a capacity community turnout in March, Grassroots Yoga Center is offering its second Self-Care Wellness Fair Saturday, May 18. The center is located at 195 E. Winnie Lane.

“We want to bring different teachers and healers together so the community can find whatever it is they need in their self care,” said center owner Emilee Riggin.

A variety of instructors will present practices, including foundations of yoga, other health practices, meditation and Reiki.

“It’s a great opportunity for people who have any interest in yoga and meditation to come down and try a collection of different practices that promote well-being,” Riggin said.

The day is scheduled in three sessions that will include restorative, vinyasa and empowerment yoga; meditation offerings in stress and anxiety, and chakra meditation; and a talk on health and wellness. Closing the day will be the unique presentation of a sound bath by Michelle Brown, which uses the vibrations of crystal singing bowls to provide deep relaxation for those attending.

The day begins with an opening ceremony for the community event at 8 a.m. and will continue until 1:40 p.m.

Those attending will enjoy various snacks, a chance to visit booths of some of the presenters and to meet many of the instructors of Grassroots Yoga Center.

A donation of $20 is suggested. The center has yoga mats, blocks and blankets, although those attending may also bring their own. Wear comfortable clothes. Carson City elementary school hits home run with Junior Giants Initiative

Students at Fritsch Elementary School in Carson City were swinging for success with their participation in the San Francisco Giants Junior Giants initiative. The free, non-competitive and innovative baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-13, focuses on education, health and bullying prevention, providing a holistic approach to community sports.

Fritsch Elementary was the only school in the state of Nevada to participate in the program.

The program not only promotes physical activity but also fosters teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship among young participants. Additionally, the initiative granted the school a curriculum (social and emotional learning SEL based), equipment and a bat and ball for every single student at Fritsch.

“Getting a personal bat and ball from the San Francisco Giants adds an extra touch of excitement and connection to the sport and for our students,” said Bethany Henry-Herman, physical education teacher at Fritsch Elementary. “It's wonderful to see organizations like the Junior Giants Foundation investing in the next generation of athletes and community leaders, within our students here at Fritsch Elementary School.”

The generosity of the San Francisco Giants in gifting every single student at Fritsch Elementary their own bat and ball is remarkable, especially considering the diverse socioeconomic backgrounds of the students, she continued.

“Providing each student with a personal bat and ball not only removes financial barriers but also ensures that every child has the opportunity to practice and play the sport, regardless of their circumstances,” Henry-Herman said. “Moreover, the fact that the Junior Giants summer camps are free, further underscores the organization's commitment to accessibility and inclusion. It's heartwarming to see such meaningful support for the students of Fritsch Elementary, empowering them to pursue their passion for baseball and softball.”

At the conclusion of the Junior Giants initiative, Fritsch Elementary students dressed in orange or SF Giants gear for an assembly where they reviewed what they had learned over the course of the program. To show appreciation and thanks, they also made a banner to share as part of a photo. After the assembly, and much to their surprise, all the students were awarded a free bat and ball.

Nevada Humane Society, Carson City branch's Pet of the Week is Valkerye, a one-year-old shepherd mix who still has a big puppy heart. She enjoys playing with children as she is used to living with them.

However, she can be a little shy around new people and unfamiliar dogs. Therefore, she will probably feel more comfortable in a home that does not have a lot of people coming and going.

It would also be best to introduce her to any other dogs and children living in the house beforehand to ensure they all get along well and have a comfortable environment. Valkerye’s loving heart and playful spirit make her a joy to be around and the perfect addition to any loving home!

Here is what Valkerye has to say: “Hey there, I'm Valkerye, and let me tell you, I'm just a big ol' puppy at heart! Playing is my jam, especially when I'm surrounded by my favorite people. Now, I have to admit, I can be a bit cautious around strangers, but give me a second, and I'll warm right up. Musician/Actor Mark Collie Slated as Guest Storyteller at CONNECTIONS on May 16th

CONNECTIONS Central announced that musician, actor, and philanthropist Mark Collie will be the guest storyteller at the May 16th CONNECTIONS gathering at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. CONNECTIONS Central is a new organization that uses the power of storytelling to promote stronger, happier and healthier relationships that enrich lives and build community.

Collie will share stories, songs, and lessons of a lifetime that illustrate the impact of music on relationships. “Music connects us like no other art form. It brings people together,” he says. “Song empowers us. It can mend loneliness and fill us with joy.” With his guitar in tow, he will set the stage for small group discussions that allow others to reflect on and share their own experiences and stories about the significance of music in their lives.

The event is open to all and will take place on Thursday, May 16th at the Brewery Art Center. It starts at 5:00 with an opportunity for a bit of socializing, complimentary beverages and small bites.

Since its launch in 2023, CONNECTIONS has seen significant expansion. Collie began his music career in the 70s as a country singer. His songs have been recorded by some of Country music’s most iconic recording artists.

He helped organize a celebrity race at the Nashville Motor Speedway bringing together the legends of NASCAR, the stars of Country Music and some of Hollywood’s most elite to raise money and awareness for diabetes research. As a result of this effort the Mark Collie Chair in Diabetes Research was formed at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Letter carrier food drive Saturday to benefit food banks across Northern Nevada

Food Bank of Northern Nevada is asking for the community’s support on Saturday, May 11 as it joins the National Association of Letter Carriers for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

The event is hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, and Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the country. The event helps to supports the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the one in ten northern Nevadans who face hunger.

Northern Nevada residents can join Food Bank of Northern Nevada and support community members who struggle with hunger by simply collecting non-perishable, non-expired food items and leaving them in a sturdy bag near their mailboxes on Saturday, May 11. Please, no glass jars.

Most needed foods include:
- Entrées (Soups, Chili’s, etc.)
- Protein (Tuna, Chicken, Beans)
- Canned fruit (Packed in water or juice preferred)
- Canned vegetables (Low sodium preferred)

A letter carrier will collect the donations and deliver them to local food banks and pantries, including the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Sierra Community House in north Tahoe & Truckee, Healthy Communities Coalition benefiting all of Lyon County, Carson Valley Food Closet in Gardnerville, Fish in Carson City and Dayton, and New Frontier in Fallon.

Items will then be distributed to those facing hunger right here in northern Nevada.

Supporters can also participate by donating through the Stamp Out Hunger virtual food drive: Stamp Out Hunger Virtual Food Drive, where every $1 helps to provide 3 meals.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive was created in 1993 by the National Association of Letter Carriers to encourage communities to come together in an effort to stock the shelves of food banks and pantries nationwide.

Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Mane Event, a fundraiser for Between Horses and Humans, a youth-oriented nonprofit serving Douglas County and the Lake Tahoe area that teaches kids life skills through horsemanship. The Mane Event is Saturday, June 1, from 2-5 p.m. at Cowork Tahoe, 3079 Harrison Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.

The event features live music, animal meet and greet, food and beverages, silent auction, kids raffle and face-painting, community mural painting, games and more. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for kids.

For the second year, Cowork Tahoe powered by Untethered has offered a $35,000 match to funds raised at the event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Cowork Tahoe and the merger of the two coworking spaces located in South Lake Tahoe and Zephyr Cove.

Trevor Pipkin and his wife Grace, co-founders of Untethered, joined with Cowork founders David and Jamie Orr, in the merger of the two coworking locations to provide a community for freelancers, entrepreneurs, remote workers and visitors to thrive in a clean, modern workspace near the shores of Lake Tahoe.

“All of us at Cowork and Untethered firmly believe in three things: family, mental health and service,” Pipkin said. “So, while we like creating great businesses, great products and great experiences, we also make sure we’re giving back to the communities in which we operate.”

Pipkin said BHH serves a critical role in the community by helping youth develop and connect themselves with their own authentic and capable selves as they learn to handle and care for the horses.

“Horses can teach us to trust more people, communicate better and build important relationships,” he said. “In my own youth, working with horses helped me reduce anxiety and fear based on trauma. The fear I had as a kid was replaced with trust, then confidence, and I was and still am able to take those things into any kind of situation today. It’s a big part of why we support BHH.”

Proceeds from the event go toward care and feeding of BHH’s horses, equipment and programming.

Nevada Health Link extends special enrollment period for Medicaid-ineligible, launches SMS Text campaign to boost awareness

CARSON CITY — In response to the ongoing Medicaid eligibility redetermination process that resumed in April 2023, Nevada Health Link is extending the Special Enrollment Period through November 30, 2024, for those who no longer qualify for Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

This initiative aligns with similar adjustments made by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and HealthCare.gov, and aims to support any Nevadan who was deemed ineligible for Medicaid benefits since Medicaid began its redetermination process following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eligible Nevadans can enroll even if they lost their Medicaid benefits more than sixty days prior, and NevadaHealthLink.com is the only place where consumers can qualify for financial assistance to help offset the cost of premiums.

In tandem with the extension of its Special Enrollment Period, Nevada Health Link is rolling out an SMS texting initiative designed to reach and engage Nevadans who no longer qualify for Medicaid/CHIP. The primary goal of this outreach strategy is to enhance awareness of continued NevadaHealthLink.com eligibility by providing simple instructions and links to enrollment assistance in a convenient format.

“Our new SMS texting initiative is a direct-to-consumer approach to connect with Nevadans who’ve lost their Medicaid coverage, and to simplify the process of securing affordable and high-quality health insurance,” said Russell Cook, Executive Director of Nevada Health Link. “We are committed to helping our community understand their options and enroll in a plan that meets their needs and budget, and we believe we’ll be able to effectively reach over 80,000 Nevadans through this campaign.”

Since Nevada Medicaid began redetermining eligibility in April 2023, only about 4% of Nevadans who were deemed ineligible for Medicaid benefits have enrolled in a plan through NevadaHealthLink.com. While there are several factors that may have impacted engagement levels, such as the availability of coverage through other sources like an employer or family member, Nevada Health Link is committed to continuing its outreach to ensure Nevadans are being met exactly where they are and to make the enrollment process as convenient as possible.

“One challenge we are seeing among individuals who have recently lost Medicaid is that they may not have a current mailing address on file with Medicaid, so they might not have received their Medicaid termination letter, and therefore might not be aware that their coverage has ended,” Cook continued. “This campaign is meant to bolster existing communications efforts from the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services (DWSS) by informing individuals who have lost their Medicaid coverage, including those who lost their coverage last year, that they’re still eligible to enroll through NevadaHealthLink.com. We want these Nevadans to know that Nevada Health Link is their best option for affordable coverage, and we have a call center and a statewide team of enrollment professionals ready to help them get the coverage they need.”

Nevada Health Link will only be reaching out via its SMS texting initiative to those households whose information was received as part of their account transfer process from Medicaid. All Nevada Health Link texts can be distinguished by knowing Nevada Health Link will attach an image to each text with the Nevada health logo and the Nevada State Seal.

The extension of this temporary Special Enrollment Period provides a critical opportunity for individuals and families affected by the Medicaid redetermination process to secure affordable, qualified health insurance without waiting for the annual Open Enrollment Period in November.

Nevadans who have lost Medicaid coverage are urged to contact Nevada Health Link for enrollment support. Assistance is available online, over the phone, or in person through a network of trained professionals, including brokers and navigators and most recently, an AI Chatbot that has been implemented onto the Nevada Health Link website. The call for country and Olympic team unity has Stephen Curry lacing up his basketball shoes for Paris and setting his golf clubs aside this July, foregoing his title defense at the American Century Championship, the celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe.

“I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to defend my title at the American Century Championship in Tahoe this summer, but the chance to represent my country and, hopefully, win an Olympic gold medal the first time at the 2024 Games in Paris is an opportunity that I simply could not pass up,” said Curry. “I look forward to returning to the shores of Lake Tahoe and creating more memories next July and in subsequent years. In the interim, I know that Dell and Seth will represent the Curry family well in my absence, but if one of them doesn’t come home with another trophy for our mantel, I will be highly disappointed!”

He carded four eagles in three days of tournament play, including a hole-in-one during the second round and a scintillating, clutch do-or-die, 18-foot putt on the final hole to capture the title. In winning, Curry became the first active athlete in 23 years to claim the title (Al Del Greco, Tennessee Titans), and the first African-American in the tournament’s 35 years.

In addition to Dell and Seth, the tournament will feature 84 sports and entertainment celebrities competing at Edgewood Tahoe, July 12-14, preceded by a Wednesday practice round and the Thursday Celebrity-Am, July 10-11.

The field represents a collection of Hall of Famers, All-Pros, All-Stars and fan favorites including Charles Barkley, Tony Romo, Josh Allen, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, John Elway, Ray Allen, DeMarcus Ware, Baker Mayfield, Kyle Lowry, Brian Urlacher, Charles Woodson, Canelo, and Larry Fitzgerald. Entertainers feature Colin Jost, Miles Teller, Nate Bargatze, Ray Romano, Don Cheadle, Carson Daly, Jake Owen, Larry the Cable Guy, Rob Riggle, and Brian Baumgartner. Previous tournament winners include 3-time champions Romo and former MLB pitcher Mark Mulder, two-time winner Jack Wagner, along with Mardy Fish, and Vinny Del Negro, plus top competitors Annika Sorenstam, John Smoltz and NHL star Joe Pavelski.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament awards a $750,000 purse, with $150,000 to the winner, plus a charity component for local and national non-profits. The 2024 American Century Championship will utilize the Modified Stableford format whereby points are awarded by score per hole. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, a George Fazio design, has been ranked among America’s top 100 courses by numerous golf publications through the years.

The tournament’s format and setting perfectly complement the informal Tahoe vibe, with players and gallery enjoying beachfront and mountain views between the action. Boats line the stretch of the course along the par 3, 17th hole, uniquely enhancing the party atmosphere. Spectators positioned along the hole enjoy good-natured bantering with the players as they slam dunk and shoot threes at the basketball hoop adjacent to the tee box and toss footballs and souvenirs to fans.

Lyon County Sheriff: Yerington woman dies, man injured in structure fire Monday night

A 36-year-old Yerington resident died, one person was injured and three escaped from a house fire Monday night in Yerington, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 11:49 p.m. the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Communications Division received a 911 call of a reported residential structure fire on Spence Lane in Yerington.

The Yerington/Mason Valley Fire Department, Deputies from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Southern Command Patrol Division, and the Yerington Police department responded to the residence.

Upon arrival, they found a single family home, fully engulfed in fire, according to the sheriff's office in a news release.

It was quickly determined that one female adult and two juveniles were able to escape the fire uninjured. One adult male subject suffered severe burns and was transported via Careflight for treatment and one female adult was unable to escape the fire and was still inside the residence.

After the fire was extinguished, the remains of Jessica Canterbury, 36, of Yerington, were located within the residence. Investigators with the Nevada Department of Public Safety, State Fire Marshal's Office responded to investigate the cause of the fire.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Investigations Division, with the assistance of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Forensic Investigation Section responded and are conducting the death investigation.

The thoughts and prayers of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office are with the Canterbury family during this difficult time.
