Exhibit hours are 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is free.

These fragments add up to convey the many dreams and voices colliding in places like these for a brief moment lived all at once, as well as the echoes and remnants left behind once a boom is over. The original documentary images are refracted and re-formed as they stretch across and texturally blend with industrial surfaces. Past and present collapse into visceral imagery, an archetypal landscape wandered by subjects and viewers alike. Let's poke holes in time and inhabit this landscape together. This work is contingent on immersion and wandering, and invites the body into the experience of film: as wanderer, visitor, archaeologist, curator.

This work is not about the political or environmental implications of North Dakota’s oil boom, but about the lived experience of those who are part of it and the force of our industrial history. This work features the voices and experiences of those blue collar workers that underlay our world.

Breaking Ground evokes the memory of those who once worked at the Donovan Mill, and invites the public to consider its own history in relation to other places.

The Donovan Mill is an historic silver stamp mill in Silver City, Nevada where zinc and cyanide methods for processing ore were perfected in the late 1800s, eliminating the need for poisonous mercury. With this innovation, the Donovan played a critical role in Nevada’s wealth and dominance of the silver industry for the next century. Come rediscover and explore this exquisite site, still standing nearly complete, and an interpretation of how it connects to industrial history across America.

Breaking Ground is not a sequential performance; therefore, come anytime during exhibit hours. Wear warm clothing and good shoes, as you will be exploring a fairly raw industrial site and the terrain can be uneven. If it is difficult for you to walk or see, this may be a challenging exhibit. May not be appropriate for young children.

GENEROUSLY SPONSORED BY:
Nevada Arts Council
The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture
Carson Demolition
GE Excavating
National Endowment for the Arts
To see more on this project visit:
www.breakinggroundexhibit.com
www.breakinggroundexhibit.com/donavan-mill
Silver City, Nevada
#comstockfoundation #comstockhistory #virginiacitynevada #donovanmill #comstockmines #silvercitynevada #virginiacity #historical #historicalplaces #historylover #historylovers #historicalplace #miningtown #mininghistory #mininglife # Arts and Entertainment Comstock Historic District experimental photography Sun, 22 Sep 2024 22:52:15 +0000 132490 at https://www.carsonnow.org Nevada Artists Association presents 'Moments in the Fall: Photographing the Fall Colors' by Heather Nicole https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/nevada-artists-association-presents-moments-fall-photographing-fall-colors
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/nevada-artists-association-presents-moments-fall-photographing-fall-colors" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Deborah Foster

Join Heather Nicole, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to noon at Nevada Artists Association Gallery, 449 W. The talk is free, open to the community, and sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Carson City, Nev.
See the flyer below.
“Fear can be overcome and even healed in our lives by discovering the strong connection and relationship we have to something bigger than ourselves — God,” says Troseth. “By learning to lean and rely on this greater, higher good, we can feel moved to love beyond ourselves — and this frees us from fear and so much more.”
Sharing examples of healing from her own life and professional practice of Christian Science, Troseth will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy.
Troseth will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy, who came to understand, confirm, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand, “He that believes on me, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible).
For over 150 years, people around the world have worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today, experiencing healings of physical ills and personal difficulties.
Lisa Troseth has been a Christian Science practitioner for many years, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. She travels from her home base in Rogers, Arkansas, to speak to audiences around the world as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

Moving past fear to healing talk in Carson City by Carson Now on Scribd
Announcements Sun, 22 Sep 2024 21:42:08 +0000 Jeff Munson 132538 at https://www.carsonnow.org Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail bike ride from Carson City to Reno set for Oct. 12 https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/historic-virginia-truckee-trail-annual-vt-bike-ride
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/22/2024/historic-virginia-truckee-trail-annual-vt-bike-ride" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail

A fun ride along the historic Virginia & Truckee Trail is planned for Saturday, Oct. 12. The utility also said it would simultaneously halve the cost customers pay per kilowatt hour for electricity, a move the utility said would result in no net increase in average customer bills but opponents said would penalize those who conserve energy or utilize solar.

The proposed rate increase garnered substantial public protest — more than 250 people offered fiery comments during multiple consumer sessions hosted by utility regulators, and groups ranging from the Nevada Conservation League to Solar United Neighbors offered vocal opposition.

The Solar Energies Industry Association described the proposal as “extreme [and] unsupported,” claiming that NV Energy was attempting to work around legislative protections for net energy metering customers “under the guise of bill stability.”

Instead, the three-member Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved a $2 per month increase, or 12 percent, for Northern Nevada single family residential users. The new monthly charge, set to go into effect in October, will put Northern Nevada customers on an equal footing with the basic service charge paid by their Southern Nevada counterparts.

“NV Energy teams are already in the process of analyzing the various components of the order and what it means to northern Nevada customer bills and rates,” a spokesperson for the utility said in an email.

Commissioner Randy Brown said the original request by NV Energy was “much too high.”

According to Advanced Energy United, a nationwide industry association focused on clean energy, the highest fixed charge in the nation for investor-owned utilities is $34.71, in Mississippi. The national average is $11.66 across 170 other investor-owned utilities.

“Today’s decision not only prevents a disastrous rate hike for households, but also shows that the PUCN listened to consumers’ concerns,” Advanced Energy United’s Nevada lead Emilie Olson said in an email. “Opting for a modest increase instead, the PUCN’s vote demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing affordability for all consumers, safeguarding Northern Nevadan ratepayers from unfair monthly rate hikes, and setting a positive precedent that will help prevent similarly onerous basic service charge increases for consumers in Southern Nevada as well.”

In its draft order, the commission stated that the proposed increase was “inordinately large and not in the public interest,” noting that it would disproportionately affect low-usage customers and would discourage energy conservation. The order countered NV Energy’s arguments about price stability by noting that most of the volatility in customer bills came from fuel costs.

NV Energy generates its electricity from a portfolio that includes coal, solar, geothermal and natural gas. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects natural gas prices will stay lower in 2024 than in previous years because of higher-than-normal inventory. More than half of the electricity used in Nevada is generated at natural gas plants.

When natural gas prices rise again, opponents to the rate increase argued, so would customers’ bills. NV Energy countered that raising the basic service charge while lowering the amount paid for usage would keep prices more stable during times of volatile natural gas prices.

In its original request, NV Energy described the basic service charge increase as necessary to cover investment costs in Northern Nevada, including expanding service and addressing a financial shortfall caused by net metering — credits residential solar producers get for adding electricity to the grid. To do so, the utility said it needed to recover nearly $106 million annually from ratepayers, with most of that, $95 million, coming from residential electricity users.

State energy regulators also limited requested increases for charges to multifamily residential users and natural gas customers.

NV Energy requested the basic service charge paid by multifamily residential users be raised from $8 to $18.80 per month; the commission instead is allowing an increase to $9.25. The utility will also be allowed to increase the basic service charge for its small commercial users and natural gas customers, from $14 to $16, less than the $18 requested by NV Energy.

The commission also lowered NV Energy’s overall request by setting the return on equity for shareholders at 9.65 percent, a small increase from the current rate of 9.5 percent but far below the utility’s proposed jump to 10.4 percent.

— This story is used with permission of The Nevada Independent. Go here for updates to this and other Nevada Independent stories.
Nevada Politics Sun, 22 Sep 2024 18:55:18 +0000 admin 132533 at https://www.carsonnow.org Carson City emergency crews called to crash involving 3 vehicles at Curry and 5th Street https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/22/2024/carson-city-emergency-crews-called-crash-involving-3-vehicles-curry-and-5th-street
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/22/2024/carson-city-emergency-crews-called-crash-involving-3-vehicles-curry-and-5th-street" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Sunday morning to a crash reportedly involving three vehicles near the intersection of Fifth and Curry streets.

The crash was reported at around 10:45 a.m. First responders were checking on injuries in the t-bone collision. They are just feet away from iconic Emerald Bay, beautiful beaches and tall trees, and underneath the turquoise blue water Lake Tahoe is known for.

Twelve years ago divers from another project discovered the copper cables and found they'd been placed on the sandy bottom of the lake by the Pacific Bell Telephone Company a century ago. After several mergers, AT&T of California acquired Pacific Bell. Three years ago, the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA), a nonprofit advocacy group based in Groveland, Calif., sued AT&T to have them removed after their discovery.

This week, CSPA announced AT&T of California, has agreed to remove its abandoned telecommunications cables that have been leaching toxic lead into the waters of Lake Tahoe for decades.

“This is a monumental win for the environment, the communities who drink Lake Tahoe water, the people with lake-dependent livelihoods, and the millions of annual visitors,” said Chris Shutes, Executive Director for CSPA.

Shutes said AT&T will be responsible for removing the cables, and the process could start as soon as this Fall. The court is required to wait 45 days before giving final approval for the removal to begin, so things, including weather, could get in the way of completion in 2024.

"Their commitment is to try to have the cables out by November 30, 2024, and no later than May 26, 2025 (Memorial Day next year)," said Shutes.

CSPA’s advocacy and litigation efforts weren't alone in their desire to get the lead out. Also working on the lead cable removal was a grassroots effort by the Tahoe Lead Removal Project. This group was holding public outreach events to obtain the required permits from seven separate entities overseeing the area and finance an extraction that was estimated to cost upwards of $2 million. AT&T will now cover that expense. The League to Save Lake Tahoe said the work will be done by licensed professional operators based on qualifications and availability.

"This action directly aligns with our mission to get the lead out, and we are thrilled that AT&T is making this commitment once more," said Evan Dreyer, founder of the Tahoe Lead Removal Project. "Based on the quotes in the various news articles, it's apparent that their senior leadership is engaged and focused on achieving this outcome by November."

"Our work will only end once the cables are physically removed from Lake Tahoe," added Dreyer. "We will remain engaged and supportive of efforts to achieve this outcome. AT&T has our support and gratitude, especially given the proposed timing this November or Spring 2025 at the latest.

After conditionally settling in 2022, AT&T reinitiated litigation to determine the merits of CSPA’s claims. The lawsuit alleges AT&T’s cables discharged lead violating California’s voter-approved Proposition 65, (The Safe Drinking Water and Toxics Enforcement Act of 1986), and those discharges presented an imminent and substantial endangerment to human health and the environment, in violation of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The cables are comprised of paper-wrapped copper wires, inside a thick lead conduit, wrapped in spiral-wound steel rods and covered with a bitumen/tar-impregnated fiber coating.

Each foot of the lead-clad cables contains approximately 3.39 pounds of lead. There are approximately 6 miles of submerged cables. As a result of this settlement, AT&T will remove about 107,000 pounds of lead from Lake Tahoe.

CSPA’s investigation revealed the abandoned cables were discharging lead. Due to wind-caused currents, anchor strikes, and deterioration over time, the cables have become damaged and degraded, exposing the lead conduit in numerous locations.

CSPA-supported scientific investigations confirmed elevated levels of lead in water and sediment adjacent to the cables. The investigations found lead in algae, which forms the base of the food web for the fisheries at Lake Tahoe. CSPA also found lead in clams and crawdads collected at the cables.

“Designated as an Outstanding National Resource Water, Lake Tahoe has no major pollution sources of lead or other metals entering the lake. So, our expectations were to see minimal to low concentrations of lead in this exceptionally clean and clear lake. The team conducted a structured scientific collection and laboratory analyses of water, sediment and microscopic plants and bacteria called biofilms (a.k.a. algae). One sample of biofilm on the cables showed lead at 67,000 times more concentrated than a reference biofilm sample taken from a rock. These biofilms are a food source for fish, and the lead can be biomagnified as it travels up the food chain,” said Sudeep Chandra, PhD, Professor of Limnology, Director of Global Water Center, University of Nevada, Reno.

Lake Tahoe, known for its breathtaking beauty, clear waters, and ecological significance, has been burdened by these lead-leaching cables. “CSPA remains dedicated to Lake Tahoe as one of nation’s most iconic waterbodies. We are proud to have fought for the removal of this toxic waste from Lake Tahoe, and we are happy that AT&T decided to finally step up,” stated Shutes.

CSPA was represented by the Aqua Terra Aeris Law Group (through Matthew C. Maclear and Erica A. Maharg), Klamath Environmental Law Center (through William “Bill” Verick), Law Offices of Andrew L. Packard, Law Office of Dr. John Kirk Boyd, Law Office of Brian Acree and the Law Office of William Carlon.

CSPA’s investigation resulted, in part, from the generous funding of therootcauseproject.org, spearheaded by Founder, Roland Peralta. Local divers, Kris Kierce and Scott Fontecchio from Lake Tahoe Diving & Environmental, performed the sampling.
News Sun, 22 Sep 2024 00:09:30 +0000 Jeff Munson 132526 at https://www.carsonnow.org Carson City Sheriff’s Office to host 3rd annual K9 Unit Challenge https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/21/2024/carson-city-sheriff-s-office-host-3rd-annual-k9-unit-challenge
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/21/2024/carson-city-sheriff-s-office-host-3rd-annual-k9-unit-challenge" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Event Date:

October 19, 2024 - 9:00am

Four-legged heroes representing law enforcement agencies from throughout the region will shine Oct. 19 as the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its third annual K9 Unit Challenge and public K9 obstacle course at Fuji Park.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the free public event will highlight dozens of K9s from multiple agencies who will compete in three primary events: patrol apprehension, odor detection, and agility.
