NDOW's wildfire rehab, restoration programs to be highlighted at Carson City Rotary meeting

Katie Andrle with the Nevada Department of Wildlife will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. Andrle, who is NDOW’s Western Regional Habitat Division Supervisor, will discuss the agency’s wildfire rehabilitation and restoration programs and how they benefit wildlife.

The public is invited to attend the meeting which takes place Tuesday, May 28, at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 West King Street, Carson City.

Andrle will also explain how the program is funded, the methods used to rehabilitate habitats after a wildfire, and the agencies pro-active efforts to reduce wildfires. She will also address NDOW’s goal to restore habitat to benefit all wildlife, including big game, upland game, sage-grouse, pygmy rabbit, and mule deer among other species.

Senior Spotlight: Pioneer Academy’s Dakota Cramer switches gears to achieve success

Character, gratitude, kindness, grit, determination and persistence aren’t qualities that are captured in Pioneer Academy’s four-point school grading scale, but if they were, the May Pioneer Academy Senior in the Spotlight would definitely be a 4.0.

When teachers and staff nominated senior Dakota Cramer, these were a few of the many characteristics that flowed from their descriptions of her. So, it is a pleasure to honor her with this recognition.

Dakota joined Pioneer as a ninth grader and has completed almost all of her coursework at Pioneer, with a short school stint done out of state. Coming out of middle school, Dakota said she lost her motivation and drive to be a great student.

She stated she did just enough to survive but didn’t do what was needed to thrive. That all changed a little over a year ago when she realized the importance of school and a different approach was necessary. When asked what made her switch her thinking, Dakota referenced a home visit her counselor made that showed her how much people cared about her success.

Hearing this message and receiving more daily reminders from her Pioneer teachers that “she matters,” Dakota made a decision to be a better student and gradually began to apply the skills to do so.

When asked what she felt was holding her back her first couple of years, Dakota said her lack of motivation and procrastination were the most difficult to work through. She was very appreciative of the Pioneer teachers who didn’t give up on her.

“They pushed me to meet my potential when I doubted what I could do,” she said. “They believed in me which helped me believe in myself.”

She continued to explain that with teachers like Mr. Echebarria, who made his English lessons relate to student’s lives, it helped her understand how important school was to help her develop in to the person she wanted to be.

Today Dakota is about to graduate and step out on a new adventure to continue school at Western Nevada College. She plans to get her associates degree, and then transfer to a university to study business and marketing or veterinary medicine. She said she has a passion to help animals in need but would like to possibly combine her interest of business and marketing in a future career.

Though she said she is a bit nervous and apprehensive about stepping out in the world, she said she feels prepared and ready to take on new experiences.

Pioneer has had the pleasure of working with Dakota for the majority of her four years of high school, and the teachers and staff witnessing her transformation are confident in her future. We are excited to see her take on her next adventure.

Honoring Service and Sacrifice: A Veteran's Reflection on Memorial Day

As Memorial Day approaches, we take the time to reflect on the significance of this holiday and the sacrifices made by countless service members. One such veteran, Chuck Staley, offers a touching glimpse into his life and the traditions he upholds to honor those who have given their all for our freedom.

Chuck Staley's military journey began at the tender age of 17 when he joined the Army, driven by a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve his country. Over his 20-year career, he became an integral part of the 82nd Airborne Division, participating in three major combat conflicts: Grenada, Panama, and Desert Storm/Desert Shield. Reflecting on his service, Chuck states, "It was my honor to serve. I would do it all over again if I had the chance."

The motivation to join the military was ingrained in Chuck from a young age. Growing up in the South, where patriotism was a cornerstone of his community, he was inspired by the images of the Vietnam War and the stories of soldiers who had made the ultimate sacrifice. "Watching the Vietnam War on TV when I was a kid and hearing about the soldiers who died overseas meant something to me," Chuck recalls. This early exposure solidified his resolve to contribute to his country's defense.

Memorial Day Traditions
For Chuck, Memorial Day is not just another holiday; it is a day steeped in personal and collective memory. Each year, he, his wife, and his son travel to Sacramento National Cemetery in Dixon, CA, to pay their respects to his stepfather-in-law, Tillman Jeffrey, a helicopter pilot. The family honors Tillman by carrying his uniform jacket, pouring his favorite Scotch on his headstone, and sharing fond memories. "We each take turns expressing our remembrances and saying his name because the most important thing is to keep his memory alive," Chuck explains.

This act of remembrance is not limited to his family. Chuck notes that the cemetery is filled with hundreds of people, all there to honor their lost loved ones. "It's a community event where everyone who lost someone in service comes together to remember. Even if you haven't lost someone, it's important to remember that the freedom we enjoy was paid for by those who made the ultimate sacrifice," he emphasizes. 

How to Celebrate and Honor Memorial Day
Chuck’s heartfelt traditions offer a guide for how we can all honor Memorial Day in a meaningful way. Here are some ways to celebrate and honor this important day, inspired by Chuck's practices:

Visit a Cemetery:
Like Chuck and his family, you can visit a local cemetery, especially those with veterans' graves. Participating in ceremonies or simply placing flowers and flags on graves is a powerful way to pay respect.

The American Legion: Sacred Places Database

Participate in Community Events:
Many communities hold Memorial Day parades and ceremonies. Joining these events helps foster a sense of unity and collective remembrance. Chuck describes how these gatherings bring hundreds of people together, all honoring their loved ones. 

Join us at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on the 24th of May at 4 p.m. for the placement of flags on the headstones of veterans.

We will meet in the middle of the cemetery and pass out bundles of flags. Flags are to be placed in the upper left corner of each headstone marked of a veteran, approximately 2 inches above the corner.

We will return on the 27th of May at 4 p.m. to remove the flags and return them to storage.

Engage in Acts of Service:
Honor the spirit of service by engaging in community service or helping a veteran or military family in need. Acts of kindness and support can be a tribute to the selflessness of those who served.

Carson City area road report for week of May 27 to June 2

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 27 to June 2, 2024. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— 2nd Street between Carson Street and Curry Street will be closed to westbound traffic from April 8, 2024 to June 30, 2025 for construction.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:
— Curry Street between Adams Street and Park Street will be reduced to a single lane from June 3, 2024, to June 14, 2024, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

— Pinto Court near Saliman Road will have shoulder work on Tuesday, from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.

— William Street between Roop Street and Saliman Road will have shoulder work on the eastbound side of the street. The bike path will be closed and trucks will be entering and exiting the roadway from Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

— Winnie Lane between Mountain Street and Carson Street will have shoulder work on the South and Northside of Winnie Lane from Tuesday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Two arrested in Carson City shooting, victims flown to hospital

Two were arrested following a shooting that happened late Saturday night where two people were taken by air ambulance to the hospital, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The suspects arrested early Sunday morning and have been identified as Juan Martinez Jr., 22, and Jaquelinne Fuentes-Gomez, 24, of Carson City.

The condition of the victims is unknown at this time, however Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the injuries were appear to have been non-life threatening.

The suspects were booked for two counts battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm, discharging firearm into an occupied structure, and two counts child endangerment with a deadly weapon, according to a sheriff's office in a news release.

Deputies were dispatched at around 10:20 p.m. Saturday to the 3400 block of Woodside Drive in east Carson City. Several callers alerted dispatch to a shooting that occurred in the area. Two victims were reported to be shot and in need of medical aid.

Deputies arrived and located two victims. They administered lifesaving aid and were flown by medical helicopter to Renown hospital in Reno. The suspect was reported to have fled the area with a female accomplice, still armed with a handgun, according to CCSO.

An "exhaustive search was conducted over the following several hours" according to the release. At around 2:30 a.m., members of the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team located the two suspects, hiding in a trailer, in the 3700 block of Reeves Street. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident.

The victims are not being identified, however, they are in stable condition. Both suspects are being held on $40,000 bond.

'Big Deal' exhibition that highlights gaming featured at WNC Carson City campus art gallery

Artist Joan Arrizabalaga celebrates Nevada’s gaming industry with her large embroidery and mixed-media slot machines in the "Big Deal" exhibition.

The Capital City Arts Initiative’s exhibit is in Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery, 2201 W College Parkway, Carson City. The show opened on May 15, 2024; the gallery is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The artist’s reception will take place on Wednesday, June 26, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m; the artist’s introduction is at 5:30.

Arrizabalaga said, “My present work is concerned with games and gambling. I am interested in how people are involved with temptation, risk, and winning. Using certain symbols, talismans, and behaviors to realize our expectations fascinates to me. This activity is present in everyday life and seems to go well beyond the more straightforward casino world. Everything can be a gamble and I see the use of the magical world to gain success, help us win, or keep us safe. I also like all the mechanisms and paraphernalia concerned with gambling.

“’The roll of the dice’, ‘easy money’, ‘the luck of the draw’, ‘manna from Heaven’, and ‘dealer’s choice’ are all expressions that I use as metaphors in my art. I like the familiar faces of the playing cards for my characters because they are subconsciously recognizable even out of context. The Joker is very important. He has many parallels, like the trickster in Native American lore.

“I work with all kinds of materials depending on where the piece is leading me. I will start in a certain way and then allow the piece to evolve. Often it has a life of its own. I like to use classical references in unexpected and humorous ways and to juxtapose the old with the new. My homage to the Old Masters comes in part from their knowledge of what God looks like. Myths of all kinds, western and historical references, and personal experiences all blend together in my fascination for what we worship, our superstitions, and the search for luck.”

Joan Arrizabalaga has been creating and showing her art for over four decades. Arrizabalaga creates both sculptural pieces and flat work using clay, wood, metal, fabric, machine and hand embroidery, and found objects. Known for artwork about Nevada and the Casinos, she also makes use of common gaming materials such as felt, dice, and cards.

Arrizabalaga has participated in many group and one-person exhibitions at the regional and national levels, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. She is a graduate of the University of Nevada, and studied with Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm Pottery, Guerneville, California. Living in London, England, for 3 years in the 1970s, she was much inspired by the life and times, glitter, glitz, and art of the British Rock and Roll world. As wardrobe mistress and dresser to the stars at Harrah’s Reno, Arrizabalaga got a closer view of the classic casino finding a great source for ideas. Her art can be seen in numerous private, corporate, and public collections.

Arrizabalaga has received the Nevada State Council on the Arts “Artist of the Year” award.

Josie Glassberg wrote the essay for the exhibition — available soon online and in the gallery. Glassberg is a freelance writer whose work has regularly appeared in Double Scoop Art News, the Reno News & Review, and Fibonacci magazine. She attended St. Olaf College for printmaking and enjoys writing about art in the West when she’s not busy with her main gig as a garden teacher.

Carlos Ramirez, a former Western Nevada College Latino Leadership Academy student, provided a Spanish translation of the show’s wall text.

Carson City Sheriff: Two shot at Woodside Drive residence

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that happened Saturday night in the 3400 block of Woodside Drive in which two people were injured.

An adult male and adult female suffered non-life threatening injuries in the shooting that happened at around 10:30 p.m. and were taken to the hospital, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Following a search, two people were arrested for their suspected involvement in the shooting. They are identified as Juan Martinez Jr., 22, and Jaquelinne Fuentes-Gomez, 24, of Carson City. Stewart Father's Day Powwow returns June 14

The Annual Stewart Father's Day Powwow at the former Stewart Indian Boarding School Campus located at 5500 Snyder Ave in Carson City, returns June 14.

There will be over forty Native American arts and crafts as well as food vendors, competition and social dancing.

Festivities begin Friday June 14 at 6:30 pm and continue Saturday June 15 beginning at 9 am with a Stewart Alumni Brunch at the Stewart gym (Alumni please RSVP at snez@nic.nv.gov or 775-687-7605).

Grand Entry for the powwow is at 1 pm, with a dinner break from 4 pm to 6:30 pm.

Remembering Mike Epps: A Legacy of Music, Compassion, and Community

This community has lost an icon. I want to share a story about a remarkable man who redefined the meaning of generosity and compassion. This isn't just any story; it's about Mike Epps, a man whose profound impact on my life and the lives of so many others is beyond words.

I first crossed paths with Mike in 2018, during a benefit concert for a local shelter. My band performed at his venue, A to Zen, and that night marked the beginning of a friendship that would blossom into something extraordinary.

From that initial encounter, Mike and I embarked on a journey filled with music and camaraderie. We performed together at numerous Songwriter Showcases, recorded a compilation CD featuring local artists, and orchestrated the inaugural “Big Tent Revival” show in Carson City. Our shared moments on the stage of the Brewery Arts Center were nothing short of magical.

What set Mike apart was his boundless compassion for local performers. He wasn't just a supporter; he was a pillar of strength for the artistic community. Through his venue, he offered a sanctuary for musicians to experiment, perform, and even test out their comedic chops. His heart was as vast as his generosity, creating a nurturing environment where everyone felt welcomed and valued.

Mike and I often talked about the thrill of watching newcomers at open mic nights at A to Zen. It was inspiring to see them conquer their fears and share their hearts with the world. Mike's unwavering support and encouragement made these moments even more beautiful.

He had a unique gift for making everyone feel like they belonged. His warm, welcoming spirit was infectious, and his dedication to uplifting others was unparalleled. Countless artists found their voices and their confidence because of Mike's selfless support.

On Tuesday, May 21st, Mike Epps passed away after a valiant fight with cancer. The void he leaves is immeasurable, but so is the legacy of love and encouragement he bestowed upon us. Personally, knowing Mike made me a better person, and I feel incredibly blessed to have called him a friend.

The friendship I shared with Mike, the music we created together, and witnessing the lives he transformed are memories I will cherish forever. Mike, you were a brother to me. I will miss you dearly, but I take comfort in knowing your spirit will always watch over A to Zen.

Sierra area fishing report: Cold water, great fishing expected for Memorial Day weekend

Hello fellow anglers. Memorial Day is here, and people will be out enjoying a beautiful weekend forecast. We deserve to have three days in a row of warm weather. We all need to slow down a little and take your time getting to your destination.

Now even though the temperatures will be nice and warm. Many of our lakes and streams are still frigid from the snow melt. A sad reminder, 55 year old Todd Anderson from Sparks lost his life at Topaz Lake last weekend retrieving a buoy. Possibly due to cold water temperatures.

This time of year with the snow melt, water temps can be in the low 40's to 60 degrees. You may be a strong swimmer, but our bodies react differently to drastic temperature changes. Please use caution and always carry a life jacket when boating. Most of all, keep an eye on your surroundings for safety reasons as well as others around you that may need help.

Here's the holiday weekend report:

SILVER LAKE ALPINE COUNTY: The lake has thawed out. The boat ramp is open, but I do not have any reports on how the fishing is. I will be going up next week to update that report.

CAPLES LAKE: The lake has thawed out 85% as of last Wednesday. The Caples Lake Resort is opening for the season May 24th. The general store and boat lunch will be in operation and they also have boat rentals available. This time of year is a good time to fish by the dam or Woods Creek area.

Watch your footing if you venture down to Woods Creek. There were a few snow drifts along the lake that could be a little tricky. Casting a Thomas Buoyant or a sinking Rapala should get you some action. Inflated nightcrawlers are also productive along the dam or spillway area. For more information, stop by the Caples Lake Resort.

WOODS LAKE: Road closed.

RED LAKE: The lake is thawed as of this week. I would recommend a 1/8 oz Kastmaster or toss some salmon eggs from the dam area.

BLUE LAKES: As of last Wednesday the road was still closed to the first gate.

BURNSIDE LAKE: As of last Wednesday the road was still closed.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR: I received this information from the BLM office in Regards to the campground area. The BLM, Sierra Front Field Office announces the Indian Creek Campground in Alpine County will remain closed until further notice.

“The Campground closure is due to damages caused by the 2021 Tamarack Fire, and significant flooding in 2022,” said Jonathan Palma, Acting Sierra Front Field Manager. “The campground will remain fully closed to public access until further notice.” In July of 2021, the Tamarack Fire burned through Indian Creek Campground and destroyed the RV /tent main loop, group camp site and restroom.

"Wildfire impacts to site facilities, hazardous materials abatement, and risks associated with wildfire-affected 'hazard' trees necessitated this closure. In August of 2022, the area received heavy rains that flooded the campground, resulting in significant sediment loading and debris fields in the campground, compounding the BLM's timeframe for re-opening the facilities. The site will remain closed to the public, including vehicles, while staff work on public safety and infrastructure restoration tasks.

"Hazard tree falling within the campground concluded in March, with over 80 truckloads of timber being removed. With the different contractors using the day use area for storage and staging, no date has been set to open the day use area to the public at this time. The BLM appreciates your patience and your cooperation in staying out of the campground during the closure. Because a re-opening date may extend well into the future, camping reservations are not available at this time."

The fishing has been very productive. This may be due to the CDFW planting the lake this week with 800 lbs of rainbow trout. The weeds are starting to get thick. But that can work to your advantage. Target the areas in between the weeds and adjust your height on your leader. I have used anywhere from a 12 to 48 inch leader. Salmon peach or green powerbait is most productive. But inflating a night crawler with scent, is a close second. Both roads are open.

WEST FORK CARSON RIVER ALPINE COUNTY: The river was running up to 300 cfm this week and may climb with warmer weather. Fishing has been challenging for most anglers. The Hope Valley area has been most productive with night crawlers or salmon eggs.

EAST FORK CARSON RIVER ALPINE COUNTY: As of last Wednesday the river was running at 1300 CFM, which is a little higher than opening day. With our warming weather, it may get up to 1600 CFM. Stay out of the river due to currents and water temps.

A few anglers have done well with nightcrawlers in the deeper pools from 1.5 to 4 lbs. I checked in with Alpine F&G, and they have no fish plants this week due to high waters. Gabriel Singer, a student from WNC’s Child Development Center, celebrated his fourth birthday with a special public safety escort to school.

Gabriel and his sister, Renee, enjoyed an exhilarating ride in Sheriff Kenny Furlong’s vehicle, complete with flashing red and blue lights and lively birthday tunes, creating an unforgettable memory.

Upon arrival, Gabriel’s classmates were thrilled to meet Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies, including Sheriff Furlong. The children explored a cruiser and motor unit, eagerly asked questions, and joined in the birthday celebrations.

Happening today: Carson High Show and Shine raises money for Speech and Debate Team May 25

Carson High Speech and Debate will be hosting the inaugural Carson High Show and Shine car show Saturday May 25th in the north parking lot of CHS from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Anyone with a classic or cool car can enter their vehicle in the event for $25.

Awards will be given for the top 10 entrees. See the attached flyer or you can register day of. Anyone can come check out the cars free of charge.

There will be raffle prizes, face painting for the kids, and food trucks on site.

This event is to raise money for the Carson High Speech and debate team which qualified a record 10 students to compete in the National Tournament in June.

Hi there! My name is Onyx and I’m the cat of the week at Catmandu.

Everyone who meets me comments on what a big, handsome guy I am and on my sleek, shiny short black coat. That’s why my name is Onyx. I think I look like a miniature panther. I am very friendly once I get to know you, but I’m not clingy or needy. I prefer attention on my own terms. However, you can usually bribe me and get some affection with sweet talk and treats. Catnip toys work too. When I’m in the mood for love, don’t stop petting me or I will pat your leg for more.

I am a real homebody. When my former owner retired, she decided to move into a small RV and travel. I hated it. Absolutely hated it. I cried and hid all the time. So here I am, looking for a new home that doesn’t have wheels or an engine. I just want a comfy home with people to love, and who love me in return. I would be in heaven if my new home had a Catio since I do love safely sitting outside. You can’t just let me outside to roam though; it is far too dangerous and I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to me.

Early voting for primary election begins Saturday in Carson City and beyond

Get ready to proudly display your I Voted stickers because early voting begins Saturday morning in Carson City for the primary elections.

Sample ballots were sent out earlier this month, while official mail-in ballots should be arriving this week.

The June 11 primary is important for a number of reasons, most importantly that if a candidate wins a large percentage of the vote, they will automatically win their seat in local elections.

In person early voting will run from tomorrow, Saturday May 25 through June 7. The polls will be open:

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
May 28 - 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
June 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
June 3 - 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Election day takes place on June 11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; as long as voters are in line by 7 p.m. they will be allowed to vote.

Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by June 11 in order to be counted, or they can be dropped off at a ballot drop box at the Carson City Community Center anytime the polls are open during early voting and on election day. Please note, they will not be accepted on Memorial Day as polls are closed for the holiday.

In addition, mail ballots are accepted at the Clerk-Recorder’s Office located at 885 E. Musser St. inside the Carson City Courthouse Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding Memorial Day.

How officials are grappling with overcrowding at Tahoe’s Sand Harbor

Designed for a maximum of 1,200 visitors per day, Nevada’s most popular state park often attracts more than 3,000.

On warm weekend days, the line of vehicles waiting to enter Sand Harbor State Park on Lake Tahoe’s east shore can back up several hundred cars deep, a conga line hoping to secure a parking spot. Within an hour of the park’s opening, the parking spaces are usually filled.

Featuring sandy beaches and rocky coves for swimming and kayaking and home of the annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Sand Harbor draws more than 1 million visitors per year — the most of any Nevada state park.

The park was not designed for that many visitors.

With infrastructure designed in the 1970s, the park’s layout was planned for a maximum of 1,200 visitors per day. But the park now welcomes more than 3,000 visitors on summer days — leading state officials to grapple with how to manage the steady increase in visitation.

When the park was built, a large chunk of land near the beaches was paved over to create parking. Now, the park boasts a relatively small beach area and underutilized picnic areas that are separated from Big Blue by a sea of asphalt.

“One of the realities of the park is with the 1970s design, the parking spots are in the most logical place for recreation,” said Kevin Fromherz, program manager for the Nevada Tahoe Resource Team and previous supervisor and lead ranger at Sand Harbor. “I can’t tell you how many times as a ranger I got asked where the lake was. The design of the park really confuses people.”

Now, the Nevada Tahoe Resource Team — an interagency group composed of State Lands, the Division of Forestry, Department of Wildlife and State Parks — is looking at ways to update the park to improve traffic flow and sustainability.

No options are off the table, Fromherz said, including moving the park’s more than 500 parking spaces to the underutilized picnic area or implementing day use reservations.

“We want to improve the visitor experience,” Fromherz said. “We know getting turned away at your favorite park is not a great visitor experience.”

Skyrocketing visitation

Nevada’s 27 state parks draw close to 4 million visitors per year. Nearly half of those visitors travel to just two parks — Sand Harbor and Valley of Fire outside Las Vegas.

Sand Harbor has seen some improvements over the years — new restrooms were installed in 2016 and the park’s visitor center and stage were constructed in the early 2000s, but its entrance and parking lots have remained essentially the same since the park opened in 1971, Fromherz said.

In 2011, Nevada State Parks started locking Sand Harbor’s gates when the parking lot was full, a practice still in place today. But it’s done little to deter visitation. People parked on the side of the highway. Others waited in idling cars, blocking traffic on narrow Highway 28 while hoping a parking spot would open. Between 2010 and 2022, the number of visitors driving into Sand Harbor grew by 15 percent.

Visitation numbers are based strictly on vehicles that drive into the park. Nevada State Parks doesn’t track those who ride shuttles or bike into the park, which is connected by the popular 3-mile, paved Tahoe East Shore Trail that starts at the Tunnel Creek Café in Incline Village.

Plans are underway to extend the trail several more miles from Sand Harbor south to Spooner Summit. State and federal officials are finalizing construction plans for the next segment of the trail.

In 2023, nearly 1.3 million people visited the park, and visitation is getting busier outside the peak season of Memorial Day to Labor Day.

“The facilities are not designed for that,” Fromherz said.

Sand Harbor, like many of Nevada’s state parks, is also plagued by a labor shortage. Last summer, the park closed its boat ramp two days per week because of a lack of employees.

The future of Sand Harbor

Last year, Nevada State Parks unveiled a reservation system for state-operated campgrounds and to reduce overcrowding at a popular Southern Nevada park.

The first park to take reservations for overnight visitors was Valley of Fire, followed by Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area near Laughlin and Washoe Lake State Park near Reno. Others followed suit.

Nevada State Parks also rolled out a pilot program testing day use reservations at Big Bend of the Colorado. The park required reservations for day use prior to 11:30 a.m. to relieve traffic at the park entrance. After that time, the park was open to first-come, first-served visitors.

At the time, a spokesperson for Nevada State Parks said the agency was also considering implementing day use reservations for Sand Harbor. Those have not been implemented yet, but an announcement will be made about them next month, a parks spokesperson told The Nevada Independent.

In a presentation to state lawmakers earlier this month, Nevada State Parks Administrator Bob Mergell said timed entry reservations were coming for the park.

As officials consider what to do with Sand Harbor, they are also drafting a new master plan — the last park master plan dates back to 1990. A final draft is expected out in January of next year, Fromherz said, with construction starting around the end of the decade.

“The public will be able to see what an ideal Sand Harbor will look like on paper,” Fromherz told The Nevada Independent. “A lot of that’s going to focus on improving the traffic flow in the park.”

Don Chepe opens in Carson Mall serving authentic Mexican, Salvadoran cuisine

For twenty years, Jose Cuella has been working in the kitchens of Carson City restaurants. Now, he has finally been able to open his own restaurant, Don Chepe Mexican Restaurant, along with his wife and five children.

The restaurant, located in the Carson Mall, took over the space after Francisco’s vacated.

“We wanted the location so we could continue serving those who had been long-time customers of Francisco’s,” Cuella said.

Cuella is originally from El Salvador, and his wife was born in Mexico, and the menu reflects both of their heritages. Customers can find everything from pupusas to birria tacos, traditional street tacos, seafood selections, rib-eye steaks, fajitas, as well as Mexican-American favorites like super burritos, taco salads, chimichangas, and more.

Cuella and his wife are in the kitchen serving up food while their five children and their spouses serve customers as the waitstaff.

“It’s definitely a mom-and-pop shop,” Cuella’s daughter-in-law Citlaly said.

Don Chepe is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with breakfast served until 11 a.m. offering choices such as pancakes, chorizo, and homemade chocolate milk for the kids (or kids at heart).

Carson City responds to questions regarding Fourth of July firework changes, access to Centennial Park

Following the news that the Fourth of July fireworks will be moving to Eagle Valley Golf Course this year, many residents in the community had questions with the most important: Where can we still see them?

The fireworks display each year is put on by Carson City’s RSVP as their largest fundraiser of the year, and has been for the past 33 years. Unfortunately as of 2021, they were no longer able to utilize the fields behind Carson High School and were forced to begin looking for a new location. More on that here.

Many commenters asked why certain locations couldn’t be utilized such as Silver Oak Golf Course, the Ormsby House, or Edmond’s Sports Field. According to RSVP Director Molly Walt, all of those locations were researched. In order to be allowed to shoot off the fireworks, certain site restrictions apply, namely the site must be far enough away from houses and the freeway with access for firefighters, which would not allow Silver Oak or the sports fields.

As for the Ormsby House, they also researched the location but are unable to launch from the roof due to the building’s HVAC system.

Walt said she exhausted all locations that could keep the fireworks display close to Mills Park but the problem lies simply in space: Carson City does not have many large open spaces far enough away from housing and the freeway to use with access for firefighters.

Shooting the fireworks from the Eagle Valley Golf Course was the last possible way RSVP was able to make the fireworks show happen, Walt said. In addition to the show, which remains free to the community wherever they would like to view it, they are also hosting a golf tournament and dinner which are ticketed events as part of the fundraiser.

Many in the community also asked why the city was keeping Centennial Park closed. According to Cameron Gresh, Carson City’s new Public Information Officer, conversations are ongoing.

“Right now our biggest concern there is safety issues posed by the single entrance and exit,” Gresh said. “In the past it’s created traffic issues. As of right now that’s why it looks like the park is going to remain closed, but conversations are still ongoing.”

Gresh said in the event Centennial Park remains closed for the fourth, he said the city believes Mills Park will still have visibility of the fireworks without having to head to the golf course.
