The trout spawned in the lower Truckee River, providing ample annual supplies for the tribes. The Indian method of spearing and trapping the trout kept their people fed, but they never fished out more than needed.

When tourists started to come to Lake Tahoe after the first Transcontinental Railroad connected the country to the Sierra Nevada in 1868, they found the fish in Lake Tahoe plentiful. They also liked the way the native people fished and the spawning flow dwindled when fishermen trapped the cutthroat in the Truckee River. The growing number of people living in San Francisco and Sacramento after the 1849 Gold Rush took notice, and commercial fishing found Lake Tahoe. Large nets pulled fish out and they were transported off the mountain.

Dams placed on the Truckee to irrigate Nevada also cut off fish supplies as did the problematic dust from sawmills, cutting fish off from their natural flow.

Resort owners and other people at Tahoe didn't want the cutthroat to disappear since fishing them was so popular, that hatcheries popped up along the shore. The problem with this method of restocking was the non-native fish that were put into Lake Tahoe. In 1887, Mackinaw (lake) trout were planted in Tahoe, but this fish was in direct competition with the cutthroat trout. It also carried a parasite that pretty much put the nail in the coffin of the native trout.

Until recent years, that is.

This is the third consecutive year the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery's Tahoe Basin Recovery team from Gardnerville has provided 100,000 Pilot Peak strain of the Lahontan cutthroat trout annually to be reintroduced into Lake Tahoe. Since 2006 they have produced and stocked Pilot Peak strain Lahontan cutthroat trout in support of conservation and recovery in their native waters of Nevada and Eastern Sierra. (they stock 500,000 total with the rest going into Pyramid, and other lakes and rivers)

While 100,000 may seem like a large number, it is quite small when looking at the massive body of water, according to Roy Ulibarri, a senior fishery biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He is based at the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex in Gardnerville.

"It will take some time to re-establish," said Ulibarri.

Ulibarri and his team are tracking the success of the program in two ways - a t-bar anchor tag attached to the stocked fish's dorsal fin, and an acoustic tag that is placed inside the fish.

Those fishing in Lake Tahoe who catch one of the cutthroat trout with the t-bar can follow the instructions on it and call in details about the fish. This way the scientists can see where the fish have traveled, and how big they have gotten. The growth and movement are important information. The Pilot Peak can grow up to about 25 pounds, and many of the 100,000 stocked in 2024 can be expected to winter over and keep growing. The dorsal fin t-bar holds a special hotline phone number and a unique identification number for the fish.

The acoustic tracking is done on a much smaller sampling and the message from the fish is tracked by receivers placed in the lake. As soon as the fish leaves the lake, the tracking ends, and the message is lost. This method can help the scientists see how deep the fish go, and where they are picked up by being fished. In 2023 there were 20 fish introduced into the lake with the sonar tracking, 30-40 will have it this year.

Ulibarri said they've only received a handful of calls from those who have caught the t-bar fish. He said the caught ones were recorded in South Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Keys, and Emerald Bay.

"It is just a drop in the bucket," Ulibarri said of those messages received.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has worked in partnership with the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery to help restock Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River, and that program has been successful, and the partnership with the Washoe Tribe and Lake Tahoe could net the same results.

The Fish Hatchery's Genetics Management Program used DNA found in museum specimens found in harvested Lahontan cutthroat trout between 1872 and 1911 to get the strain used today to stock Lake Tahoe.

"We are very honored to partner with the Tribe for reintroducing the native fish that is their culture," said Ulibarri.

The Washoe Environmental Protection Department has been involved in the restocking of the Lahontan at Meeks Bay, their tribal land.

The Washoe said it is a very important part of the restoration of Lake Tahoe to reintroduce the cutthroat. The Meeks Bay event allows them to share their history and explain why they are doing the fish stocking.

The program is expensive and funding comes from Congress and grants for research through Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) funds.
Outdoors Wed, 21 Aug 2024 00:50:49 +0000 Jeff Munson 132066 at https://www.carsonnow.org UPDATE: Dayton area woman reported missing located and safe, says Lyon County Sheriff's Office https://www.carsonnow.org/story/08/20/2024/lyon-county-sheriff-dayton-area-woman-reported-missing
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/08/20/2024/lyon-county-sheriff-dayton-area-woman-reported-missing" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

UPDATE: The Lyon County Sheriff's Office reports the 24-year-old woman reported missing earlier Tuesday has been found safe.
***
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office received a report Tuesday of a Dayton area woman who is missing or endangered and was last supposed to be in the Silver Springs area. Some projects are expected to continue through the fall.

For project details, including land ownership, lead agency, start date and expected duration, view the Forest Thinning Projects Map at Tahoe Living With Fire which highlights current and upcoming projects.

Forest health is a top priority of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP), a landscape-scale collaboration and partnership between nearly 80 public and private organizations to achieve the environmental goals of the region. To date, partners have treated nearly 95,000 acres in Lake Tahoe Basin forests to reduce hazardous fuels.

After decades of fire suppression, Tahoe Basin’s forests are overstocked and highly vulnerable to insects, disease, and catastrophic wildfire. Forest thinning projects are a vital forest management tool used by land managers to help protect communities by removing excess vegetation (fuels) on public lands that can feed unwanted wildfires. These projects complement defensible space and home hardening efforts on private property in neighborhoods and communities. Forest thinning also contributes to improved forest health, wildlife habitat, and watershed and forest resilience in the face of climate change.

These projects improve forest health by thinning trees in dense areas, which reduces competition for water, sunlight and nutrients and allows remaining trees to thrive. Thinning also decreases the potential for spreading tree diseases and insect infestations such as white pine blister rust, dwarf mistletoe and bark beetles.

Land managers use different methods during forest thinning treatments that include mechanical and hand thinning. Mechanical thinning utilizes heavy equipment to remove trees and most of the excess vegetation while hand thinning is accomplished by hand crews using chainsaws to remove trees and pile excess material for burning after the piles dry which may take two to three years.

Mechanical thinning sometimes requires the closure of an area during operations due to the hazards posed by heavy equipment and falling trees. Hand thinning generally does not require project area closures. Mechanical thinning is used wherever slope and road access allow and hand thinning is typically used in urban areas, where only smaller trees and brush need to be removed or where equipment access is restricted, often on steep rocky slopes
.
Short-term effects of forest thinning projects include temporary impacts to recreational areas and changes to the appearance of Lake Tahoe Basin forests.

Treated areas may look disturbed immediately after treatment, when fresh stumps, equipment tracks, freshly chipped or masticated vegetation, or burned areas are more visually obvious. These areas recover quickly and improve ecologically as new vegetation growth occurs within a few years. Similar short term visual impacts can occur after prescribed fire treatments, but these areas also recover quickly.

Thinning operations typically take place in the summer and continue into fall as conditions and weather allow. However, some operations may be implemented over the snow when conditions permit. In addition, some small, isolated thinning projects may be conducted on short notice and may not appear on the map due to the small window of opportunity to implement these projects.

For completed forest thinning projects, view the Forest Vegetation Interactive Map that highlights forest thinning treatment accomplishments of the TFFT and the EIP.

Learn more about living in fire-adapted ecosystems, forest thinning and prescribed fire at Tahoe Living With Fire and get prepared, get informed, and get involved.
Outdoors Tue, 20 Aug 2024 00:11:15 +0000 Jeff Munson 132052 at https://www.carsonnow.org Lyon County Commission hears senior program update; adopts drainage plan and OKs public health campaign https://www.carsonnow.org/story/08/19/2024/lyon-county-commission-hears-senior-program-update-adopts-drainage-plan-and-oks-pub
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/08/19/2024/lyon-county-commission-hears-senior-program-update-adopts-drainage-plan-and-oks-pub" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Lyon County news release

The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners convened Thursday, August 15 to hear presentations on regional issues and approve several significant agenda items.

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program Update
Molly Walt from the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provided an update on services for Lyon County residents, including the Good Neighbor and Respite Care programs. Meaning, the law pertains to both Bagwell’s time as mayor as well as time spent as a supervisor.

Since her first election to the board as a representative of Ward 3 in 2015, Bagwell will have served Carson City for 10 years at the expiration of her current term as mayor.

This is where the question comes from: at the time of her reelection, Bagwell has not exceeded her 12-year term limit. However, if reelected, Bagwell will have extended the 12-year limit by the time her next term ends.

During their investigation of state and local laws, Woodbury’s office has determined that because the language in the law is ambiguous, they “identify nothing in the language (of the law) which would suggest that a person cannot be elected to another term if completion of the next term upon successful election would mean that the total years o service exceed 12 years.”

They came to this conclusion because the language in the provision states that a person is excluded from running if that person has served in that office for 12 years by the expiration of their current term.

“At present, you have not served 12 years,” Woodbury wrote in the opinion to Bagwell. “Additionally, your current term as Mayor expires in January 2025, at which time you will only have served a total of 10 years as both Ward 3 Supervisor and as Mayor.”

Bagwell will face off against former supervisor Jim Shirk in the bid for mayor on Nov. 5, 2024.
Nevada Politics Mon, 19 Aug 2024 20:55:40 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 132046 at School campuses and hallways were flooded with people again and students, educators and employees were greeted with enthusiasm, excitement and a renewed commitment to learning.

"The first week of school is always an exciting time, and this year has been no exception," said Mr. Andrew Feuling, school superintendent. "We’ve worked hard over the summer to ensure our schools are ready to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment for all students. It’s wonderful to see our students and staff back in the classrooms, eager to start the new academic year."

Several elementary schools including Bordewich Bray, Empire, Fremont, Fritsch and Mark Twain Elementary participated in Back-to-School nights and open houses. Eagle Valley and Carson Middle Schools offered boot camps and sneak peeks while Carson High offered orientations and other welcome events. Additionally, nearly 1,000 full-time and part-time district employees, teachers and administrators celebrated the return to schools.

A total of 37 new educators and 31 new employees attended on-boarding trainings in the days leading up to the first day of school. Those numbers, down from 71 new teachers and 46 employees at the start of the school year last year, speaks to the district’s employee retention efforts. For a brief time, Goldfield was the most populated city in Nevada, boasting more than 20,000 residents at its peak after gold had been discovered there in 1903.

Counted among its residents were people who left an indelible mark on Nevada history, including boxing promoter Tex Ricard, who got his start as a saloon owner there before staging heavyweight title fights for Jack Dempsey. In 1906, Goldfield hosted the longest lightweight championship fight in modern history.

George Wingfield, who used the fortune he made in Goldfield to become the state’s biggest banker, was instrumental in lobbying for the legalization of gambling and quick divorces. Then there was his partner, George Nixon, who owned a number of hotels, had a town named after him, and served in the U.S. Senate.

Admission to Thursday's lecture is $10 for adults. officially open with a grand opening celebration planned for Sept. 7.

The store is located at 2031 East William Street, one block West of I-580, in front of Tractor Supply and is the second locally owned Northern Nevada location, with the first located at the corner of Kietzke Lane and Mill Street in Reno and a third slated to open soon, according to owner Jonas Grant.

“The new 8,000 square foot store carries every major brand in the of tires and custom wheels, for the average commuter to the off-road enthusiast, all available on RNR’s affordable payment plans with no credit needed and a customer care package that includes installation, TPMS service, and lifetime rotate and balance and alignments,” Grant said.

According to Grant, he and his team had been searching for a location for some time in Carson City to open up shop, but nothing quite seemed to fit.

“After years of searching for a suitable location to buy or lease in Carson City, our team decided the best option to build a brand-new store with state-of-the-art equipment from the ground up, which was the more costly and time-consuming option but ultimately provides our customers with a superior experience,” Grant said.

“We offer the tires, alignments, brakes, and suspension work our customers need, and the off-road tires, wheels, and lift and level kits they want,” Regional Director Mark Hodgson said. “One of our ASE-certified mechanics and I relocated from Reno in order to give the store the best startup possible.”

RNR Carson City invites the public to its grand opening celebration on Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free food and ice cream, giveaways including a set of new tires and a set of new wheels, and appearances from local radio DJs including JJ Kristy from KBUL, Chris Payne from KDOT, and Juan from Juan FM, as well as a $5-down promotion with no credit needed to help customers keep their cash in their pocket during these challenging times for local families.

See the website here for more information.
Business Mon, 19 Aug
