They were joined by teams doing the same tests simultaneously in other regions of the watershed.

Since 2001, Snapshot Day partners have sampled sites from Meyers to Tahoe’s North Shore, on to Truckee and through Reno, terminating at Pyramid Lake. By collecting water quality data from the same sites each year, the League to Save Lake Tahoe and event partners can track changes in the health of Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River watershed. For the past eight years, the League has focused on the upper watershed, which includes the headwaters of the Upper Truckee River and dozens of water bodies across the South Shore.

“What was surprising is just how much goes into monitoring all the different tributaries that go into Lake Tahoe,” commented Ian Walter, a first-time participant in Snapshot Day.

As volunteers waded into marshes and streams to take measurements of characteristics like pH, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity, they became “citizen scientists” for the day, contributing important environmental data. They also gained a deeper understanding and connection to the watershed where they play, visit, live, and work.

“I think it’s important for us to do our part. Especially if we love a place, it’s up to us to protect it,” said Aislinn Kari, another first-time Snapshot Day volunteer who made the journey from Reno to join in. “Being a part of this and feeling as if I contributed something, it just feels good.”

With the addition of this year’s sampling, there is a robust water quality dataset stretching back nearly a quarter century. It allows researchers, scientists, and organizations like the League to track changes in important water quality parameters, as well as gain a better understanding of how the Tahoe ecosystem responds to environmental shocks like droughts and wildfires. The data analysis can also guide planning for ecosystem restoration projects and other efforts that make the Tahoe environment more resilient in the face of climate change.

“Since 2001, the water quality data collection and field assessments for Snapshot Day have played an integral part in telling the story of Lake Tahoe's health,” said Deirdre Francks, Science and Data Coordinator from the League to Save Lake Tahoe. “Next year, for the 25th year of the event, we are going to compile a larger report highlighting the story of Lake Tahoe, its clarity, and the volunteers that ensure it remains healthy for future generations."

In addition to water quality tests conducted by citizen scientists in the field, samples are also taken to a lab to be analyzed for bacteria, total dissolved solids, and turbidity by generous event partners from the South Tahoe Public Utility District and Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Snapshot Day partners look forward to analyzing this year’s data and sharing findings with the public in the coming months. Volunteerism among seniors in Northern Nevada isn't just an act of kindness; it's a pathway to enhanced well-being, social connection, and a legacy of service.

The Silver Lining of Aging: Volunteerism
As individuals transition into their senior years, they often encounter shifts in lifestyle and priorities. Retirement brings newfound freedom, but it can also lead to a sense of purposelessness for some. However, volunteerism emerges as a silver lining, offering a plethora of benefits that extend far beyond the act of giving.

1. Enhanced Mental and Emotional Well-being
The sense of purpose derived from contributing to a cause larger than oneself can combat feelings of isolation and depression. In Northern Nevada, where rural communities are scattered across vast distances, volunteerism becomes a bridge connecting individuals and fostering a sense of belonging. By contributing their time and skills to causes they care about, volunteers experience a deep sense of meaning and increased life satisfaction.

2. Physical Health Benefits
Many volunteer opportunities involve physical activity, whether it's outdoor clean-up projects, assisting at community events, or supporting local organizations. Staying physically active is crucial for maintaining mobility and overall health, particularly as individuals age. Volunteering reduces stress and increases positive, relaxed feelings by releasing dopamine. Reduced stress further decreases the risk of some physical and mental health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety and general illness. In addition, people who volunteer have lower mortality rates than those who do not, even when controlling for age, gender and physical health.

3. Lifelong Learning and Skill Development
Whether it's learning new technologies to support virtual volunteering efforts or acquiring leadership skills by organizing community initiatives, every volunteer opportunity presents a chance for personal growth. In Northern Nevada, where a diverse array of volunteer opportunities exists—from supporting wildlife conservation efforts to tutoring local students—seniors have the chance to explore their interests and passions while continuously expanding their skill sets.

4. Reducing Loneliness
By actively engaging in community service, volunteers form meaningful connections with others, foster friendships, and combat social isolation. The shared sense of purpose and belonging within volunteer groups provides a supportive network, helping individuals build relationships that alleviate feelings of loneliness.

5. Connection to the Community
Volunteering fosters a deep sense of connection to the community one serves, strengthening the bond with other residents and cultivating a collective commitment to the community’s well-being. By becoming integral members of the community, volunteers collaborate to drive positive transformations and uplift the lives of those they help and themselves.

6. Driving Improvements
Volunteers’ collective efforts create a tangible impact, transforming neighborhoods, enhancing public spaces, and addressing pressing community issues. Volunteering empowers individuals to drive positive change and make a lasting difference in the place they call home.

7. Gets you out of your comfort zone
Engaging in volunteer work encourages individuals to explore uncharted territories, pushing the boundaries of their comfort zones. It presents opportunities to embrace new challenges and experiences and foster the development of resilience, adaptability, and a mindset geared towards growth. Stepping outside the confines of familiarity allows for personal growth and transformation, empowering volunteers to recognize their true capabilities and broaden their horizons.

8. Increased empathy and understanding
Volunteering provides an opportunity to develop empathy and foster a deeper understanding of the world around us. Engaging in meaningful service exposes individuals to diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. This experience enables volunteers to nurture compassion and promotes unity and social cohesion.

9. Feel a sense of purpose
Engaging in volunteer work helps give individuals a sense of purpose and fulfillment. By contributing their time and skills to causes they care about, volunteers experience a deep sense of meaning and increased life satisfaction.

10. Personal growth and self-discovery
Volunteering is an opportunity for personal and professional growth because volunteers develop diverse skills through practical experience. From leadership and teamwork to problem-solving and communication, volunteering provides a platform to develop these vital new skills. Participating in volunteer work is an opportunity to discover one's passions, interests and values which can lead to a profound understanding of their individual strengths, principles, and aspirations. This process of self-discovery has the potential to uncover hidden talents, improve self-confidence, and cultivate emotional resilience.

In Northern Nevada, volunteerism isn't just a pastime; it's a way of life embraced by seniors seeking purpose, connection, and fulfillment. From revitalizing neighborhoods to supporting vital community services, seniors play an integral role in the region's social fabric through their volunteer efforts. Outgoing Battalion Commander Cadet Commander Noah Bean handed over the reins to incoming Battalion Commander Cadet Commander Neva Mellow.

“The prestigious ‘Cadet of the Year’ award recognizes an individual who has consistently exemplified the core values of the NJROTC program: honor, courage and commitment,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Jerry Skirvin. “Cadet Mellow's dedication to her unit, her academic achievements and her leadership skills set her apart as a deserving recipient of this honor.”

Additionally, the unit had reason to celebrate as it recently placed third out of 30 units in Area 22, a testament to their hard work and dedication. As a result of being number three, the unit earned the Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors award. The unit has earned this award for the last seven years running. This achievement underscores the unit's commitment to excellence in all aspects of their training and activities.

Thursday’s ceremony also saw cadets being recognized for various achievements, including academic excellence, physical fitness and community service. Each award served as a testament to the diverse talents and strengths of the cadets within the Carson High School NJROTC program.

What made this year's ceremony particularly special was the involvement of 15 organizations from the local community. These organizations, ranging from veterans' associations to civic groups and businesses, generously sponsored awards and scholarships for the cadets. Their support not only added to the significance of the event but also demonstrated the strong bond between the NJROTC program and the community it serves.

Among the awards presented were those for leadership, outstanding performance in drill competitions and excellence in naval science studies. Each award served as a reminder of the values instilled by the NJROTC program: discipline, teamwork, and a commitment to service.

As the evening drew to a close, the sense of pride and accomplishment was palpable. Cadets, adorned with their awards and badges, stood tall as they were applauded for their hard work and dedication. The ceremony was not just a celebration of individual achievements but also a reaffirmation of the values and principles that the NJROTC program stands for.

Looking ahead, the cadets of Carson High School's NJROTC program are poised to continue making a positive impact, both within their school community and beyond. As they carry forward the lessons learned and the values instilled during their time in the program, they will undoubtedly excel as future leaders and responsible citizens.

Additionally, after a decade of dedicated service, Carson High's NJROTC program bids farewell to their esteemed Senior Naval Science Instructor, Lieutenant Commander Dan Meyer, as he retires from his role with the unit.

“Throughout his leadership, Commander Meyer has left an indelible mark on the NJROTC program, guiding countless cadets towards excellence and instilling in them the values of honor, courage and commitment,” Sr. Chief Skirvin said. “His passion for mentoring youth and his unwavering commitment to the development of future leaders have earned him the respect and admiration of both cadets and colleagues alike.”

Under his guidance, the NJROTC unit at Carson High School has flourished, achieving numerous accolades and milestones, Skirvin continued. Lt. Cmdr. Meyer's dedication to the program has not only enriched the lives of the cadets but has also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and pride within the unit.

As Lt. Cmdr. Meyer transitions into retirement, the unit welcomes Sr. Chief Petty Officer Jerry Skirvin, who will step into the role left by Lt. Cmdr. Meyer. Sr. Chief has been an integral part of the NJROTC unit for the last 5 years, benefitting from Lt. Cmdr. Meyer's mentorship and guidance during his tenure. With his wealth of experience and dedication to the program's success, Sr. Chief is poised to continue the legacy of excellence established by his mentor, ensuring the continued growth and success of Carson High School's NJROTC program.

The NJROTC program aims to teach high school students the values of citizenship, leadership, character and community service, while also providing a foundation for future careers in the military or other fields. The program is offered in more than 600 high schools across the United States, and the NJROTC Area Managers visit each unit once a year to conduct inspections.

Finally, CHS NJROTC has an opening for an instructor. The school is looking for individuals who have served in either the U.S. Marine Corps or the U.S. Navy to join this high-achieving team. NJROTC instructors work with CHS students in a respectful and rewarding environment passing on knowledge and experiences to develop effective leaders. Those interested should contact Senior Chief Petty Officer Jerry Skirvin at 775-283-1787 or Josh Billings at 775-283-1637.
News Tue, 14 May 2024 15:56:11 +0000 Kelsey Penrose 130683 at https://www.carsonnow.org Sierra Nevada Journeys hosts 'Grown-Up Summer Camp' this August https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/05/04/2024/grown-getaway-camp
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/05/04/2024/grown-getaway-camp" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Sierra Nevada Journeys

Are you ready for a unique summer camp experience, designed exclusively for adults? The cold weather kept me in far too long recently. I wanted to be outside. The temperature was perfect with a bright blue sky and little wind.

One of my first chores was hooking the hoses and sprinklers up again. I had unhooked everything to prevent freezing, or so I thought. The first hose leaked like a sieve from the faucet and hose connection. So, I put that task on hold until my husband could figure it out.

Then, I turned on the automatic irrigation system to give the lawns and trees a good soak. Three out of the five stations had problems. One had a head that was completely busted off, shooting water like the Bellagio fountain. Another station has an underground leak and a head that won’t shut off. Finally, the last station had two heads that were stuck.

Being early in the season, this is fairly normal for a system that is 35 years old in some areas. However, it also required a trip to two box stores for sprinkler heads, hose parts, washers and so on. I dug up the heads and my husband installed and adjusted the spray distance and width.

My neighbor Roni loaned me her short-handled drain spade which simplified the job. I can’t believe that in 35 years of digging up irrigation heads and lines I have never had one of these great tools. In the end, turning the irrigation system on was an all-day task. But happily the yard is being watered as I write this.

Roni and I were talking about the difference in our yards. I told her that my advice to anyone putting in a new landscape would be to do as they had done. They have a manageable lawn for their dog. That’s the only high-flow overhead irrigation they have. This reduces weeds and sprinkler problems. All the rest of their beautiful yard is on drip systems.

They have larger mainlines and drip tubes without emitters, which keeps things from clogging. At our house, 90 percent of the irrigation is high-flow overhead sprays, because that was what was here when we bought the house. Our big trees had 20 years of lawn irrigation before we got here. Taking out thousands of square feet of lawn without damaging tree roots would have been quite challenging. Trying to cover all the roots with drip irrigation after removing the lawn would have also been tough.

I love our landscape, even with all the work required.

— JoAnne Skelly is Associate Professor & Extension Educator, Emerita, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. He was a scientist who discovered Love Potion Number Nine. Yes, Larry unearthed a chemical that heightens desire, not that the world needs it. A drug that would diminish desire might do the world more good in the long run.

But Dr. Young was singing the praises of a chemical to make the heart flutter in a good way when he died of a heart attack at age 59.

Does Dr. Young’s work signal the day when perfect mates will be selected at the pharmacy? I can see the ads now: “Perfect Husband Drive Through.”

So what would Mark Twain say?

“Young people seem to think love is the swiftest of all growths, but in fact it is the slowest. No man, no woman, can know true love until they’ve been married a quarter of a century.”

Why don’t they do a study on the mating drive of cicadas? They build-up a libido underground for 13-17 years before busting sod and singing their odes to Aphrodite loud enough to wake Muddy Waters in his Illinois grave.
Poets? Who will need poets anymore when we have chemicals to stir the passions? Poets will be out to pasture and will be hauling in their signs when Love Potion Number Nine hits the market.

So why have scientists failed to study the mating habits of the cicada? Probably because no scientist can wait 13-17 years for the cicada to come calling. Scientists as a general thing are not patient people. I went out with a scientist once when in college, and just as I was about take her hand she announced without emotion, “You blinked sixteen times in a minute, and that indicates irritable bowel syndrome.”

Personally, I hope the old-fashioned way of finding a mate prevails, that of hanging out on the corner near the ice cream parlor, and watching the girls go by.

But while I’m thinking about it, a person’s last words, as they might show up in an obituary, are so important. I tend to favor, “I done my damndest.” We just don’t want to go out mad, like W. C. Fields, whose fiery last words were to his long-standing mistress, Carlotta: “Damn the whole world and everybody in it but you, Carlotta.” (Carlotta must have been an exceptionally nice person.)

This causes me to consider the possibility of a future life. Hey, if a cicada can take a dirt nap for 13-17 years, and come up singing, why can’t we?

All I know for sure is, we have to make the most of this life we’ve got, choose a good mate, raise some good kids, and make the world a little better place. Above all, while I’m up on this soapbox, please, in this great land of ours, where we can be anything — be kind.

— For more than 35 years, in over 4,000 performances, columnist and Chautauquan McAvoy Layne has been dedicated to preserving the wit and wisdom of “The Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope,” Mark Twain.
