Virginia City will commemorate Veterans Day with a patriotic parade down C Street on Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., paying tribute to the nation’s veterans and their families. </p> <p>This free-to-attend parade will feature over 40 participants, including local veterans’ organizations, high school junior ROTC programs and other groups dedicated to supporting and uplifting veterans in the community. Attendees can expect a vibrant display of patriotic entries, marching groups and uniformed participants proudly making their way through Virginia City.</p> <p>“We are honored to host this annual event as a way to show our gratitude to the brave men and women who have served our country," said Todd Tuttle, tourism director. Center St.</p> <p>Formerly Armistice Day, Nov. 11 commemorates the anniversary of the 1918 peace agreement that ended World War I. Traffic flaggers will alternate directions of traffic through the work zone as roadway drainage pipe is installed, with moderate travel delays.</p> <p>The road work schedule is subject to change without notice.</p> <p>Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.</p> <p>A drainage drop inlet and new drainage pipe will be installed. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.</p> <p>The James Beard Award winner noted his life ambition was that he looked forward to a day where he could cook for those who needed him rather than those who wanted him to cook, recalled longtime friend Karel Ancona.</p> <p>In the last weeks of his life, Charlie Abowd was thinking of families and individuals in the community who might not be able to afford a Thanksgiving dinner and launched a community food drive with KNVC 95.1 FM Carson City community radio to collect non-perishable food for distribution to our community's food insecure. </p> <p>The drive is now through Nov. 26. Donations sought are instant and fresh potatoes, canned green beans, corn and fruit, dried onions, cream of mushroom soup, cranberry sauce, chicken broth, stuffing and gravy mix are needed.</p> <p>Donations can be left anytime at KNVC, located at 990 N. Minnesota St., Carson City.</p> <p>In 2012, Charlie and Karen founded The Greenhouse Project, a nonprofit with a mission of providing healthy produce for the residents in our community who are food insecure. Green Central, which is its main site, is located at Carson High School, and offers work-based learning for the students. TGP also includes Foothill Garden, which is a collaborative project with, and located at, Carson Tahoe Medical campus.</p> <p>In 2023, "Recipes and Rambles That Made Adele's a Nevada Hot Spot: Forty Years of Cuisine and History as Told by Chef Charlie Abowd" was released. In it, Abowd shared stories about Nevada politics, history, and fabulous recipes combine for an entertaining, informative memoir. First responders were checking for injuries.</p> <p>Traffic is being diverted. Forecasters say the chance of precipitation is around 60 percent.</p> <p>By the evening, conditions will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 26 and wind gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent with little or no snow accumulation expected.</p> <p>The storm is expected to clear out Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies with highs in the low to mid 50s.</p> <p>For the Sierra and Lake Tahoe area, motorists should prepare for slow travels over the Sierra passes, particularly Monday evening into Tuesday morning, NWS forecasters said.</p> <p>A <a href="https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=REV&amp;wwa=winter%20weather%20advisory" title="https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=REV&amp;wwa=winter%20weather%20advisory">Winter Weather Advisory</a> has been issued for the Lake Tahoe area until 10 p.m., Monday with snow expected above 6,500 feet, bringing anywhere between 2 and 6 inches with higher amounts over peaks.</p> <p>For the Lake Tahoe area, rain is likely Monday then turning to rain and snow. One sign will be located just north of Colorado Drive, and the other will be located south of Walker Lake Boat Harbor.</p> <p>Using radar, the signs display vehicle travel speeds back to the motorist, along with the posted speed limit. The speed feedback signs help raise motorist awareness to slow down if speeding.</p> <p>Tragically, speeding and impairment are leading causes of Nevada traffic deaths. Following the BDR submittal on Aug. 15, 2024, the city received feedback and determined that the original BDR concept as presented contained “obstacles to the bill’s passage that required revision and resubmission” to the legislature. The BDR asks the legislature to direct the Interim Committee on Growth and Infrastructure to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the Nevada commission for the Reconstruction of the V&amp;T Railway. Mr. Haskin reported “…I want to assure the Board and the public that the life, health, and safety of the citizens of Lyon County is our top priority. I know from past experience working with this Board through the 2023 flooding that protecting life, health and safety is your priority as well and I want to thank the Board for your continued trust in me and the Lyon County team as we work through these issues. Any decisions that are made [regarding effluent disposal] are made with life, health, and safety in mind.”</p> <p>The BOCC will discuss and possibly approve recommendations for processing planning applications, site improvement plans, and building permits in the Dayton sewer service area during a special meeting on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 9:00AM while Lyon County staff work to identify solutions for increased effluent disposal capacity. The agenda for the special meeting is posted on the Lyon County website.</p> <p><strong>Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Awards</strong><br /> Sheriff Brad Pope presented Deputy Joshua Lynch and Deputy Ian Foster with Meritorious Service Medals due to their actions during the pursuit of a reckless driver in Fernley on July 28, 2024. Further, three Fernley citizens were presented Life Saving Awards for their heroic work during a fire on September 23, 2024 on Woodchuck Drive and Deputy Trevor Bonds was presented a Life Saving Award for his swift actions to revive a six-month-old infant in Fernley.</p> <p><strong>Planning Items</strong><br /> Conditional Use Permits (CUPs): The Board approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for Hunewill Construction for the expansion of an existing aggregate pit operation on land subject to RR-20 (Rural Residential – 20 Acre) zoning located near the intersection of Highway 338 and Desert Creek Road in Smith Valley with the condition that the expansion remains east of Desert Creek.</p> <p>In addition, the Board approved 4-1 (Hendrix opposed) a request from Project One Nevada for a CUP for an aggregate extraction operation within the Sage Vista Specific Plan on land subject to RR-20 located north of US Highway 50 and east of Bryce Street in Mark Twain. Following numerous public comments from neighboring residences on potential impacts, the CUP was approved with amended conditions which include limited hours of operation, no commercial sales, moving the site of the operations area to north of the proposed extraction site, and limiting the approval to five (5) years. After five years, the applicant may request an extension from the BOCC.</p> <p>Airport Ordinances: Commissioners approved an ordinance amending Lyon County Code Title 15, the Lyon County Land Use and Development Code to define and allow for Private Use Airfields and General Aviation Airports; and other matters properly related thereto. Further, the Board approved an ordinance amending Lyon County Code Title 15 to adopt airport influence areas and other matters properly related thereto.</p> <p><strong>Other Board Actions:</strong></p> <p>· Appointments: Appointed Shannon Lee Ceresola (Fernley), Loretta Sell (Silver Springs) and Wendy Loomis (Wellington) to the Lyon County Planning Commission with terms expiring December 31, 2028. The Board also appointed Taylor Allison and Jeff MacDonnell to the 911 Surcharge Committee with terms expiring December 31, 2026.<br /> · BLM Solar Western Plan: County Manager Haskin presented Governor Lombardo’s Consistency Review letter regarding the Bureau of Land Management’s Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement and proposed Resource Management Plan for Utility-scale Solar Energy Development. All students, staff and visitors were evacuated safely. There was not a fire. The fire department responded and gave the all-clear to re-enter the building. The caller informed Douglas County Emergency Communications that her son, identified as John Brown, had allegedly assaulted her with a handgun and then fled on foot. </p> <p>The caller further advised that Brown was attempting to steal a vehicle from an uninvolved individual on Pit Road. An additional individual appeared to be accompanying Brown. Brown was unsuccessful in taking the vehicle, and both he and the additional individual fled on foot toward Tillman Lane.</p> <p>DCSO deputies continued searching the area for both suspects, utilizing drones and K-9s. At 1:52 a.m. on November 8, 2024, deputies located an individual, later confirmed to be Brown, sitting in a vehicle on Short Court. Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies observed an apparent handgun on Brown’s lap.</p> <p>Deputies ordered Brown to exit the vehicle. At that point, it is reported that Brown pointed the gun at deputies, prompting them to open fire, and Brown was struck multiple times. One deputy sustained an injury to his hand and was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center for treatment.</p> <p>Brown was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. The additional individual with Brown was identified as a 16-year-old male juvenile, who was arrested on charges of robbery and booked into the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.</p> <p>The shooting, attempted armed vehicle theft, and assault are being investigated by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada State Police. All deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending a review by the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.</p> <p>***</p> <p>Early Friday morning just before 2 a.m. an incident occurred in the Gardnerville Ranchos that left one suspect dead and a Douglas County deputy injured, according to information provided by Douglas County.</p> <p>The information provided is as follows. We will update with new information as it becomes available.
