Kyle Dalpe. “It’s a difficult conversation, but these types of events make it an easier conversation. We are committed as an organization to providing resources and we are investing in mental health services for students. If it helps one person not make that decision, that helps us all and it’s worth the money we’ve spent.”

Amy Roby, the community program coordinator for the Suicide Prevention Network in Minden, and Emma White of the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention were also on hand to provide support for the event by sharing their experiences and how we all can contribute to preventing it.

Roby’s nonprofit organization focuses on advocacy and prevention, providing free services and programs to the public.

“We do this through trainings and education about recognizing signs that someone might be experiencing a mental health condition or possibly having thoughts of suicide,” she said. “Opening up the conversation of mental wellness and eliminating the stigma that prevents someone to seek the support that they need and deserve.

“No one should ever feel embarrassed or hesitant to reach out for help. We are whole beings and we don’t hesitate to seek support for an ear infection or broken limb; brain health is no different. This work is very precious to me.”
Roby has experienced the loss of someone close to her from suicide and is determined to help others prevent it from happening to their friends and family members.

“I didn’t know then what I know now, which is why I feel like it is so important that we all learn to be more alert that someone else might be having a moment of difficulty, a season of difficulty or possibly having thoughts about suicide,” Roby said. “When we know more, we can do more. Education is so important; it’s empowering. Suicide is something that impacts us all and we can all work together to create more robust suicide-aware and suicide-safe communities.”

White serves as the statewide youth suicide prevention coordinator.

“It’s such an important cause, such an important conversation,” she said. “I’m very passionate about suicide prevention because that comes from my own experience of surviving suicide when I was 15. Unfortunately, after that, I’ve lost people in my life to suicide as well.

“The only way we can decrease our suicide numbers is through events like this, through training, through preparing people to having these conversations, expanding access to resources. We can’t do it without all people being onboard. Suicide prevention is really everyone’s business.”

WNC Associated Students of Western Nevada President Suzanna Stankute and Wildcat Veterans Club President Leo Triglia also spoke to attendees.

“It’s apparent that in a world where we’ve never been more connected, that we have never felt more alone,” Triglia said. “The only cure for loneliness that causes suicide is humanity. If we truly wish to fight suicide, we have to take ownership within each of our lives and the lives around us. Ownership means we must stop putting the burden to single days of awareness and making it a constant burden that we carry daily.”

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Call, text or chat 988 for help.

Following the walk, participants enjoyed refreshments and checked out a variety of resources available to help people considering suicide.
News Thu, 02 May 2024 15:32:35 +0000 Jeff Munson 130527 at https://carsonnow.org Douglas Sheriff's Office investigation leads to arrest of trio for store thefts https://carsonnow.org/story/05/02/2024/douglas-sheriffs-office-investigation-leads-arrest-trio-store-thefts
<fb:like href="https://carsonnow.org/story/05/02/2024/douglas-sheriffs-office-investigation-leads-arrest-trio-store-thefts" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

Azura Ridley, Jose Trujillo-Gutierrez, and Sol Garcia-Hernandez were booked into the Douglas County Jail for suspicion of theft less than $1,200 and conspiracy to commit a crime.

On April 26, Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Boot Barn, 935 Topsy Lane, in north Douglas County and south of Carson City for a theft in progress.

Douglas County dispatch broadcasted the description of three suspects fleeing the location in a white Chevrolet SUV. Visually exploring connections and disconnections between Southern Nevada and Northern Nevada cultural attitudes, aesthetics, and geographical distinctions — these 16 artists communicated and visually responded to each other’s unique economic, environmental, political, and social settings — further dissecting this notion of a splitting geography and/or communion of Nevada’s polarities.

Exhibition Run: April 25 – July 12

Gallery Name: Carson City Senior Center, Sagebrush Dining Room, 911 Beverly Drive Gallery Hours: Monday – Wednesday, 9-4 p.m.; Thursday, 9-1 p.m.; Friday, 9-4 p.m.

“Geographical Divides” examines Nevada’s unique visual culture. It is a state labeled with cultural myths like “Area 51,” “The Biggest Little City in the World,” and “Sin City,” and one that commands the imagination of Postmodernism from the architecture of Las Vegas to the proliferation of the Burning Man Festival held once a year.

It is comprised of two major metropolitan communities — in the north and south — divided by 300 miles of vast desert. Nevada’s art communities are not separated by distance of travel alone. There are notable differences among artists throughout the state in what is important in their work, most of which connects with where they live. This traversal of Nevada has also led to the realization of how little dialogue there is between artists of the two dominant communities — Reno and Las Vegas — not to mention the artists living in remote territories of the Nevada outback that are sometimes overlooked.

Collaborating artists include: Maria Arango, Las Vegas/Lynn Schmidt, Reno; Erik Beehn, Las Vegas / Nolan Preece, Reno; Bobbie Ann Howell, Las Vegas / Galen Brown, Carson City; Daryl DePry, Las Vegas / Sharon Tetly, Carson City; Keith Conley, LasVegas / Sidne Teske, Tuscarora; Anne M. What a wonderful event it was!

CASI was established to help build a new animal shelter in Carson City and since that time CASI has continued its positive, lifesaving outreach. From major donations including an ACO vehicle and fencing and equipping the shelter play yard, to assisting with emergency medical expenses, CASI has been a committed community partner for over 12 years.

To date, CASI has provided spay/neuter access for over 1100 pets through CASI Critter Fixer voucher program. Critter Fixer allows low-income pet owners access to this important service, directly reducing the numbers of animals surrendered to our shelters.

Thank you to the following businesses and individuals who helped make our Bark Whine & Dine a huge success. Because of you, we are able to help even more animals in need.

Bitter Root’s Kate and Mark Johnson, we loved your music! Sheriff Furlong, you once again knocked the live auction out of the park.
