Mammovan returns Thursday to Carson City to kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to make it easy for women to access a mammogram, the Nevada Health Centers Mammovan is visiting Carson City this Thursday, Oct. 3.

Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, so access to annual screenings is critically important. Mammography screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however, screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 that have a screening referral from a provider.

Appointments are from 7:40 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., Sierra Nevada Health Center, 3325 Research Way, Carson City.

Fall forest thinning continues around Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team forest thinning projects are underway and scheduled to continue over the next several weeks, conditions and weather permitting. For project details, including land ownership, lead agency, start date and expected duration, view the Forest Thinning Projects Map at Tahoe Living With Fire which highlights current and upcoming projects.

Forest health is a top priority of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP), a landscape-scale collaboration and partnership between nearly 80 public and private organizations to achieve the environmental goals of the region. To date, partners have treated nearly 95,000 acres in Lake Tahoe Basin forests to reduce hazardous fuels.

After decades of fire suppression, Tahoe Basin’s forests are overstocked and highly vulnerable to insects, disease, and catastrophic wildfire. Forest thinning projects are a vital forest management tool used by land managers to help protect communities by removing excess vegetation (fuels) on public lands that can feed unwanted wildfires. These projects complement defensible space and home hardening efforts on private property in neighborhoods and communities. Forest thinning also contributes to improved forest health, wildlife habitat, and watershed and forest resilience in the face of climate change.

These projects improve forest health by thinning trees in dense areas, which reduces competition for water, sunlight and nutrients and allows remaining trees to thrive. Thinning also decreases the potential for spreading tree diseases and insect infestations such as white pine blister rust, dwarf mistletoe and bark beetles.

Land managers use different methods during forest thinning treatments that include mechanical and hand thinning. Mechanical thinning utilizes heavy equipment to remove trees and most of the excess vegetation while hand thinning is accomplished by hand crews using chainsaws to remove trees and pile excess material for burning after the piles dry which may take two to three years.

Mechanical thinning sometimes requires the closure of an area during operations due to the hazards posed by heavy equipment and falling trees. Hand thinning generally does not require project area closures. Mechanical thinning is used wherever slope and road access allow, and hand thinning is typically used in urban areas, where only smaller trees and brush need to be removed or where equipment access is restricted, often on steep rocky slopes.

Short-term effects of forest thinning projects include temporary impacts to recreational areas and changes to the appearance of Lake Tahoe Basin forests. Treated areas may look disturbed immediately after treatment, when fresh stumps, equipment tracks, freshly chipped or masticated vegetation, or burned areas are more visually obvious. These areas recover quickly and improve ecologically as new vegetation growth occurs within a few years. Similar short term visual impacts can occur after prescribed fire treatments, but these areas also recover quickly.

Thinning operations typically take place in the summer and continue into fall as conditions and weather allow. However, some operations may be implemented over the snow when conditions permit. In addition, some small, isolated thinning projects may be conducted on short notice and may not appear on the map due to the small window of opportunity to implement these projects.

Carson City Schools to celebrate 'Week of Respect' with activities to help curb bullying

Per Nevada Revised Statute the first week of October (Sept. 30 to Oct. 4) is designated as the “Week of Respect.” In tow with the annual observance, the Carson City School District will ensure consistent implementation of anti-bullying programs and practices in all schools and work environments with activities and events this week and next. Activities include kickoff events, dress-up days, pledges, giving and receiving compliments and more.

Parents and community members are invited to participate in the activities and discussions throughout the week at Bordewich Bray, Empire, Fremont and Seeliger Elementary Schools. Carson High, Pioneer Academy, Carson Middle, Eagle Valley Middle, Fritsch Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary will all observe the “Week of Respect” Oct. 7-11.

“The ‘Week of Respect’ is the launching of a yearlong effort to enhance a safe and respectful learning environment,” said Andrew Feuling, superintendent for the Carson City School District. “The initiative aims to foster a culture of kindness, empathy and understanding among students, staff and the community.”

Throughout this week and next, class curriculum and social activities will center on the five standards of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) including self-management, self-awareness, responsible decision-making, relationship skills and social awareness. Events will also prompt students to reflect on and share personal experiences of what respect means to them, how they give and receive respect and how they react when they perceive they are being disrespected.

The “Week of Respect” highlights skills and interactions that facilitate positive student relationships and empowers students to observe the impact they can make, simply by approaching each day from a place of treating others the way they wish to be treated.

Information about Nevada Law NRS 388.122-135 was provided to students and staff, which helped them more fully recognize bullying, how to report incidences when bullying occurs and the steps the district will take when allegations of bullying have been made.

“In today's world, it's important for our students to understand that we do not need to share the same opinion as others; however, we do need to learn to be respectful of other's opinions and be civil where we disagree,” Superintendent Feuling said. “We hope the activities this week will help bring that concept to life for our students.”

Carson City deputies arrest man for suspected arson following brush fire investigation

A 49-year-old man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of third degree arson and other alleged offenses following an investigation into a brush fire, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Aaron Jonathan Jacob Osbun was taken into custody at 2:41 p.m. for allegedly starting the fire near Lone Mountain Cemetery. He was also booked for suspicion of obstructing a public officer, obtaining use of another identification to avoid prosecution and an outside agency warrant.

According to the booking report, Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 1:29 p.m. to a brush fire near Lone Mountain Cemetery. Deputies were advised a witness saw a subject walking from the area where the smoke was at. The deputy contacted the reporting party (RP)and stated they took photos of the man who was seen walking north off the hill where the fire was. The RP showed the deputies photos of a man wearing glasses, a gray hat, red shirt, black backpack and blue jeans and advised the man was seen walking west on Northridge.

The deputy responded to the area of Northridge and North Roop where they saw a man who fit the description of the man walking away from the fire. The officer told the man he matched the description of a subject last seen walking off Lone Montain hill where there was an active fire burning. The man denied having anything to do with the fire, the report states.

The officer was able to build a rapport with the suspect and provided him with some water. The deputy asked the man where he wa staying. The man advised he was homeless and stated he lived on the hill and he had some personal property stashed up there. The deputy asked the man what he was doing in the area and the man stated he was going to the gas station to get a drink and watch the fire, the report states.

The deputy asked the man if he had any weapons on his person. The man advised he had a knife in his belt. The officer asked for consent to conduct a pat down for weapons. The man allowed for the search of his front two pockets and the deputy located a Bic lighter in his right front pocket. He had a black wallet in his left rear pocket that he denied the deputy consent to search, the report states.

The man gave a name, that turned out not his real name, and provided the deputy with a date of birth, which returned as clear and valid out of Indiana. The deputy had dispatch attempt to get license information out of Indiana. Dispatch advised they were unable to get a photo and the demographics listed on the license was he was 5 foot 10, 210 pounds and having brown hair. As the deputy waited for a detective to respond, the deputy received a call from the jail deputy who advised there was a male in the system with the name of Aaron Osbun, who returned with a felony warrant out of California that was extraditable.

Dispatch advised the warrant was confirmed. The man was taken into custody for obstructing, using the ID of another to avoid prosecution, and the El Dorado County, Calif., warrant. He was also booked for alleged arson third degree following the investigation into the brush fire.

Edwards Motor Car rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum

Come down Saturdays and Sundays and take a ride on the historic Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend No. 401 Edwards Motor Car. Built in 1926 by the Edwards Motor Car Company, the 401 hauled passengers between Ajo and Gila Bend, Arizona, from 1926 until 1947. Rides occur approximately every 40 minutes from 10:00am until 2:00pm. Fares are $8 ages 12 and over; $4 ages 4-11 and museum members; and FREE ages 3 and under.

Carson City 'HUGS for Homeless' launches 2024-2025 clothing drive, SW Gas Foundation leads campaign

The Saint Teresa Avila Conference, Saint Vincent de Paul Society is launching its 2024-2025 HUGS for Homeless winter clothing drive for Carson City homeless adults.

We are asking for $12,000 of monetary donations from the citizens of Carson City and its business community during the months of October, November and December to buy new winter clothing (coats, gloves, hats and socks) for our homeless population.

Southwest Gas Foundation is this year’s HUGS for Homeless Campaign Leader with a $2,500 donation. HUGS for Homeless is a multi-year strategic effort to prevent and protect our homeless citizens from cold-weather disease and illness and from cases of frost-bite and hypothermia. Our goal is ZERO winter deaths within our homeless population due to exposure to winter weather.

We see firsthand that our homeless population continues to grow each year due to the increasing gap between household incomes and the cost of rental housing in Northern Nevada. SVDPS volunteers’ daily interaction with our homeless Neighbors in Need shows that senior citizens and veterans are two of the fastest growing segments of unsheltered homeless citizens in Carson City.

Your generosity during 2023 for our HUGS for Homeless project, along with volume clothing purchase discounts from BIG 5 Sporting Goods, C-A-L Ranch Stores and JC Penney, allowed us to purchase and distribute over $10,000 of new coats, hats, gloves and socks to our most vulnerable citizens during the 2023 - 2024 winter season.

Below are frequently asked questions that we receive from our HUGS for Homeless supporters.

Why do you only purchase new winter clothing versus accepting used winter clothing? All too often, used clothing is not in good enough condition and suitable for wearing 12+ hours daily during extreme outdoor conditions. We buy durable, high-quality winter coats (with hoods) and gloves that provide water resistance and thermal protection while being able to last the entire 5-month winter season.

Why do you prefer monetary donations versus new winter clothing donations? First, as a Nevada 501(c)(3) non-profit business, we are exempt from state and local sales taxes. This results in 7.6% of savings compared to normal purchases by individuals. Second, we have negotiated volume discounts with preferred local retailers (BIG 5 Sporting Goods, C-A-L Ranch Stores and J.C. Penney) that are not available to other businesses, groups and individuals. This is a WIN-WIN for our local economy.

When will the winter clothing be purchased, and what will you be buying? We plan to purchase winter clothing in October and early November (pre-winter season sales) and in January (post-holiday season sales). Depending on resources available, we may buy in March (winter clearance sales) for next winter. We only purchase adult men’s and women’s winter clothing - hooded winter coats, water-resistant gloves, knitted wool hats and crew-length athletic socks. One $100 donation supplies a new coat, two pairs of gloves, two hats and enough socks to last 5 winter months.

About the Douglas County Community Services Foundation
The Douglas County Community Services Foundation was formed in 2011 to support the community centers and senior centers in Douglas County, both Lake, Valley and South County. The Foundation’s main emphasis is to support the construction and ongoing capital and equipment needs of the Carson Valley Community and Senior Center, Kahle Community Center and the Topaz Ranch Estates Neighborhood Center in South County. The Foundation is a non-profit 501(C)(3) corporation intended to make improvements to the community and senior center as easily and efficiently as possible with the maximum amount of accountability. “We’re excited to continue this much-loved tradition for our community,” says Matt Wetzell, General Manager of Casino Fandango. “Our Oktoberfest brings people together with great food, live music, and of course, a fantastic selection of beers. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the fall season.”

The Casino Fandango Biergarten will offer an impressive lineup of Bavarian-style craft beers, paired with authentic German fare like bratwurst, pretzels, schnitzel, and sauerkraut. The event will also feature live oompah bands, ensuring a festive atmosphere for everyone in attendance.
