NDOW was immediately called to assist with the bear, where it was determined that G51 had third-degree burns on his paws and burns on his face and rump as well. The Department refers to this bear as G51 as that is how he is documented in NDOW’s data system.

After caring for the bear since Wednesday, Animal Ark, graciously agreed to rehabilitate G51. Animal Ark is fabulous. I will follow-up with retreatment visits”.

“We’re grateful for our partners at Animal Ark,” said Nevada Department of Wildlife Director Alan Jenne. “While NDOW manages over 900 species of wildlife in Nevada, we’re simply not set up to handle this type of long-term rehabilitation. Participating students include Will Acuavera, Analisa Bates, Kaitlyn Insell, Kennadee Irving, Amy Rivinius, MJ Vinson, and Madeline Wilson.

Their professor, Jayna Conkey, said, “It’s rewarding to be a teacher when the students respond with mature and exciting work. The students’ creativity was exceptional and each hit a high mark.”

Conkey described her assignments: “The Caslon and Bodoni posters are from a typography assignment given in an intermediate graphic design class (GRC 210 – Type 1). The purpose of this project was to expand creative typography and design approaches while showcasing the history of a typeface. Every font (typeface) on any given computer was designed by someone – probably hundreds of years ago. For this assignment, students were required to choose a typeface then research its history. Next, they created a poster that had to include a biography and image of the type designer as well as a dynamic display of the typeface’s elements (uppercase, lowercase, numerals, glyphs and punctuation).

“The Massimo Vignelli posters were assigned in an advanced graphic design class (GRC 220 – Graphic Design 1). As a tribute to some of the most noted designers in the graphic design field, the students were asked to create a poster showcasing a famous graphic designer. They were required to research designers and, after choosing one, create a poster reflecting the designer’s style – without simply copying their work. While researching, they had to ask themselves what characteristics made that designer’s work so unique – what was their ‘claim to fame?’ An understanding of these ideas helped them create visually interesting designs, echoing the work of Vignelli.”

The infographic designs on Color Theory, The Origins of the Coffee Bean and the Chicken Coop Checklist were designed and drawn by students using Illustration software. Students were required to create and then draw their own graphics (they were not allowed to use clip art).

Sharon Rosse, CCAI Executive Director, said “The Initiative is delighted to present this excellent work — these were demanding assignments. Jayna Conkey’s lessons challenged the students and they definitely rose to the occasion.”

This show is another in CCAI’s ongoing series of student exhibitions in the Brick.

The Capital City Arts Initiative is an artist-centered nonprofit organization committed to community engagement in contemporary visual arts through exhibitions, arts education programs, illustrated talks, artist residencies, and online activities.

The Initiative is funded by the John and Grace Nauman Foundation, Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, Kaplan Family Charitable Fund, Southwest Gas Corporation Foundation, Steele & Associates LLC, and CCAI sponsors and members.

For additional information, please visit CCAI’s website at www.ccainv.org.
Arts and Entertainment CCAI Student Art Exhibition in the Brick Sat, 21 Sep 2024 12:59:24 +0000 132386 at https://www.carsonnow.org Robert Nylen talks 'Legacy of Carson City Mint' Thursday at Nevada State Museum https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/21/2024/robert-nylen-talks-legacy-carson-city-mint-sept-26-frances-humphrey-lectur
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/21/2024/robert-nylen-talks-legacy-carson-city-mint-sept-26-frances-humphrey-lectur" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Nevada State Museum

To celebrate the opening of its newest exhibit, Mint to Museum, the Nevada State Museum presents "The Legacy of the Carson City Mint," a Frances Humphrey Lecture delivered by History Curator Emeritus Robert Nylen on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Discover the fascinating history and enduring impact of the Carson City U.S. Mint, a pivotal institution in Nevada’s rich heritage. The community is invited to share in the excitement on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 5-8 p.m. in downtown Carson City.

Free trunk-or-treating has expanded to both museums this year. Vehicle entries will go all out to compete in the car decorating contest, while handing out candy to visitors from 5-7 p.m. along Ann Street next to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson Street, and in the north parking lot of the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street. CandyBurger and The Lady Griller food trucks will also be on site to satisfy monster appetites.

Inside the Children’s Museum, the Monster Bash Dance is fun for the whole family! Entry into the dance is $5 per person. Meanwhile, the Nevada State Museum offers free admission to its haunted ghost town and mine as well as the Spooky Critters Curator’s Corner in the Dema Guinn Concourse.

The Halloween Museum Block Party is a family-friendly event. Visitors are asked to wear their coolest non-scary Halloween costumes.
