We Remember Your Sacrifices, You are Not Forgotten: The Story and Art of the Stewart Indian School is a multi-media exhibition that tells the story of the Stewart Indian School and its alumni, with stories, photographs and art objects.

The exhibition strives to honor the children who attended Stewart, tell the truth about their experiences, and help the living alumni, their families, and tribal communities to heal.

Exhibition Hours Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m , Oct. 3 through Dec. 1

Public Reception - Nov. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The exhibition is at the Brewery Arts Center East Building Exhibition Hall, 449 W King Street, Carson City.

Mobile Dental Services program offers affordable dental care at Carson City schools

Finding affordable dental care for children can be a challenge. To help with this, the Nevada Health Centers Mobile Dental Services program will visit Carson City this coming week by offering Mobile Dental Services to students and children, newborn to 21-years-old.

The mobile office is fully staffed with dentists and assistants and will offer full dental services including exams, cleanings, X-rays, sealants, extractions, restorative services, fillings and oral health education.

The dental services will be provided to children with or without dental insurance coverage. Private insurance, Medicaid and Nevada Check Up are accepted. Children without dental insurance will be supported through generous community grants.

The mobile program will be at:

Carson High School, Monday, Oct. 7, from 12-5 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Empire Elementary School, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 and 10 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 11, from 7 a.m. to 12 noon.

1884 Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar travels across state lines

Friends of the Nevada State Museum

During the Friends of the Nevada State Museum recent Tin Cup Roundup fundraising event in Carson City, the raffle of an uncirculated 1884 Morgan silver dollar resulted in the coin traveling across state lines to California.

Raffle winter Dominic Durham of Tehachapi, Calif., visited the area several months ago and visited the State Museum. While there, Durham purchased four raffle tickets. Subsequently, he purchased five additional tickets for the 1884 Morgan silver dollar coin.

As a collector of Morgan silver dollars, he is elated to add this one to his collection. When contacted about winning the coin, he stated that he “would like to thank the Carson City Museum for the preservation of such a historical site and the opportunity to win such a beautiful coin. Thank you so much.”

Roundup Master of Ceremonies George Alm and former Nevada First Lady Dema Guinn opened the event welcoming attendees. In addition, they also conducted a raffle for an 187O Seated Liberty replica medallion. The medallion, minted on the Museum’s Coin Press #1, was won by Carson City resident Lisa Kordonowy. In addition, over 30 raffle baskets, gift certificates, and art works were won by attendees purchasing raffle tickets.

The Roundup and related initiatives were outstanding successes raising more than $18,000 toward the restoration of the museum's iconic 1967 Chevrolet step-side pickup. This is a historic vehicle that once played a vital role in bringing Nevada's history stories to every rural corner of the state.

Any funds beyond the restoration costs will enable the organization to continue supporting the Museum’s archival and educational mission serving the community and state. The FNSM thanks the community, especially the participants, major corporate sponsors, raffle prize donors, and the Governor’s Mansion staff for their support of this fund raiser which generates a significant portion the group’s funding.

Silver Springs to celebrate Wild Wild West Founders Day Parade with block party, food and more

The community of Silver Springs is excited to announce its annual Wild Wild West Founders Day Parade, happening on Saturday, Oct. 12. This year’s parade will be led by the Nevada Chapter of the National Pony Express Association, who will carry an authentic mochila along Ft. Churchill Street, honoring the historic Pony Express route.

At the start of the parade, the riders will hand-deliver the mochila to our esteemed Grand Marshal, Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope, who will then be escorted down the parade route by Rider’s proudly carrying the Nevada and American flags. This symbolic exchange and escort pay tribute to Silver Springs’ pioneering roots.

The Opening Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in front of the Silver Springs Senior Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill St. The parade will be emceed by JJ Christy, host of KBUL Radio 98.1, who will be stationed near the Sheriff's Substation at 1315 Lahontan St.

The parade promises a lively procession of horse riders, wagons, community groups, and classic cars, all paying homage to the area’s Wild West spirit. The parade route leads to Penny Park at 1355 Donner Trail, where the Founders Day festivities will continue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Founders Day Block Party and Park Events:
Once the parade reaches Penny Park, the fun continues with a wide array of activities for all ages, including:

• Block Party Car Show: Featuring classic cars and live music.

• Food Trucks & Coors Beer Trailer: Delicious food and refreshments to enjoy throughout the day.

• "Showdown" Cornhole Competition: One-on-one, cash-play Cornhole games.

• Pony Express Riders & Horses: Meet the riders and their horses up close at the park.

• Radio/Music: KBUL Radio van and JJ Christy playing music and engaging with the crowd.

• Vendor Booths: Community information, crafts, and local products on display.

• Square Dancing: Led by returning caller Bill Sutman.

• Kids Zone: Featuring games and a puppet show for the little ones.

• 50/50 Raffle and Prizes: Support the community and take a chance at winning great items.

This year’s event is all about honoring our local heritage and bringing the community together for a day of family-friendly entertainment.

Lyon County Sheriff ask for public's help located missing, endangered Dayton woman

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a missing and endangered woman from Dayton.

Monica Stephenson, who also goes by "Miren" was last seen Thursday, Oct. 3. On Saturday, Lyon County sheriff's deputies responded to the 200 Block of Gordon Lane in Dayton for a report of a missing person.

During the investigation, deputies learned that Monica Stephenson was last seen Thursday, Oct. 3 at her residence in the 200 block of Gordon Lane in Dayton. Monica left the residence at approximately 2:30 p.m. Monica left in her 2003 white Chevrolet Blazer after being involved in a verbal altercation.

Monica suffers from autism, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder and may be without her medications.

A ping of Monica’s phone indicated she may be in California. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is currently in contact with California agencies in an effort to locate her as well.

If you see Monica, her vehicle, or have any information regarding her whereabouts, please contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at 775-463-6620.

She is 5 feet four inches, 316 pounds with short brown hair and hazel eyes. She wears eye glasses. She left in a 2003 white Chevrolet Blazer (Nevada license plate 037X15).

Carson City's Mile High Jazz Band presents 'Taking Chances' big band jazz and poetry Tuesday

The Mile High Jazz Band, singer Jakki Ford, and seven award-winning poets and readers present "Taking Chances,” an evening of big-band jazz and poetry, on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Gina's Good Life Music & Lounge, 507 N. Carson Street, inside the Carson Nugget.

The music is free, donations are welcome. Gina's is a smoke-free, climate-controlled venue, and has a well-stocked bar.

"Taking Chances” features the 17-member band playing swinging songs on the theme of the evening. Poets and readers are Rita Geil, Terri Breeden, Wayne Carlson, Krista Lukas, Melanie Perish, Timothy Rhodes, and the Reno Poet Laureate, Jesse James Ziegler.. Each poem expresses an aspect of the theme and is followed by a tune that relates to the poem. Several tunes feature Jakki Ford.

Pianist and bandleader David Bugli said, "We'd like to tell you the tunes we will be playing, but that would spoil the fun for the audience to make connections between the poems and the tunes that follow them. You need to be there to experience it."

Mile High Jazz Band performances and educational activities are supported in part by private donations and memberships, and by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts. For information about the band and its activities, see milehighjazz.com.

Regional Transportation Commissioners to discuss the construction of a new multi-use path, JAC purchases, and more

The next meeting of the Regional Transportation Commission will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9 following the 4:30 p.m. CAMPO meeting and will take place in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Items on the agenda include a new multi-use path construction, JAC purchases, trail grants and more.

An amendment to the cooperative agreement between the RTC and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) for the Carson City DMV Multi-Use Path Project, which will revise the scope and name of the project update references to environmental regulations, update contact information, among other things.

The update will also remove $310,000 in carbon reduction plan funding, as well as $16,327 in local match, for a new total of $1.55 million in federal funding and $81,500 in local match.

The project includes the construction of a new multi-use path, extending from the existing Linear Ditch multi-use path along Roop Street to the entrance of Governor’s Field. The project will also rehabilitate up to seven miles of Carson City’s existing multi-use path network.

According to the agenda, staff were not able to secure an easement with the State of Nevada for the planned construction of a new multi-use path south of the DMV facility. Because of this, a portion of the work has been removed.

The project’s design is complete, and NDOT has approved it for construction, which is anticipated to begin in the Spring.

— Commissioners will discuss the ratification of a 2024 Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) grant application for $7.36 million that, if approved, will be used to compete the Ash Canyon Road and Trailhead Project, including a $410,00 in local match.

— The purchase of two transit vehicles from Model 1 Commercial Vehicles, Inc. will be discussed in the amount of $208,820 for each vehicle for a total not to exceed $417,640. These vehicles will be ADA-compliant, mid-size, low floor transit vehicles for the JAC transit system.

CAMPO Commissioners to discuss pavement assessments and JAC funding

The next Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) meeting will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room at the Carson City Community Center.

On the agenda topics include pavement assessments and JAC funding.

— Carson City will join forces with Douglas County if an interlocal agreement is approved for the data collection, analysis and reporting of a pavement condition survey to include portions of Douglas outside the CAMPO boundary. Douglas will be responsible for reimbursing CAMPO for an amount not to exceed $37,600 for their portion of the survey.

To perform the Pavement Management Survey the cost will be just over $150,000 and will include a physical survey and conditional assessment of roadway pavement along approximately 276 roadway miles in Carson City and approximately 176 roadway miles in Douglas County.

— Commissioners will discuss proposed performance targets for 2025 for capital assets funded by CAMPO such as Jump Around Carson (JAC) and other transit facilities.

Nominations Open for Carson Water Subconservancy District 2025 Andy Aldax Award

Carson City, NV – The Carson Water Subconservancy District is now taking nominations for candidates to receive the 2025 Andy Aldax Award as described below:

Award Purpose and Scope

The CWSD Andy Aldax Award for Exemplary Service in Conservation and Protection of the Carson River Watershed was initiated in 2007 to honor Andy Aldax, a Carson Water Subconservancy District (CWSD) Board member since its inception in 1959 - 2013. Andy was a life-long resident, farmer, and dairyman in the Carson Valley of northern Nevada and demonstrated an ongoing dedication to improving his community, as well as the Carson River Watershed. Andy died in February of 2020.

The Carson River runs approximately 184 miles beginning in Alpine County, California, and continuing through Douglas County, Carson City, Lyon County, and Churchill County, Nevada. Its watershed encompasses approximately 3,966 square miles.

The Carson River Watershed Vision is to achieve healthy sustainable watersheds within the entire Carson River Basin; to achieve improved watershed conditions, so all lands and waterways (surface and underground) safely receive, store, and release clean water for the good of all peoples, environments, and natural resources of the Carson River Basin; to achieve this vision through community-led and private/public partnerships for the implementation of local and basin-wide plans and projects.

This award recognizes individuals and/or organizations for significant contributions in promoting and achieving the Carson River Watershed Vision.

Please submit a 1-page narrative outlining how the nominee meets the award criteria outlined below to Catrina Schambra at catrina@cwsd.org by Monday, October 28, 2024.

Award Criteria

To be considered for this award, nominees must:

1. Have demonstrated a commitment to Carson River Watershed conservation activities for 10 years or more; and,
2. Have produced accomplishments toward the goals outlined in the Carson River Watershed Vision Statement; and,
3. Be an organization, landowner, community member, or employee of a federal, state, or local entity living or working in the Carson River Watershed.

CWSD will review the list of nominees and present the award at the January 15, 2025, Board of Directors Meeting.
