Topsy Lane in Carson City opened its doors for a soft opening and this week, they will celebrate their official grand opening all weekend long.

Ace Hardware is a popular home improvement and hardware store that has a few long-established stores in Gardnerville and Reno, but this is the first in the capital city.

The store offers everything from power tools to paint, kitchen wares to bird houses, plumbing to patios and everything in between.

According to owner Aaron Wickstrom, he decided to open a location for the popular hardware store in Carson City because of his love for the region.

“People are great and friendly, and it reminds me of the small city-town I grew up in,” said Wickstrom, who grew up between central California and northern Minnesota. “I just love the area, everyone has been so nice and welcoming.”

What Wickstrom said sets Ace Hardware apart from competitors is customer service.

“We make it a point to excel in customer service,” Wickstrom said. “We have a lot of retired people who worked in trades who bring that level of expertise. Even if we don’t know the answer, we know how to figure it out to solve the issue.”

The grand opening at Ace Hardware begins Friday and continues through Sunday.

Each day brings unique deals, Wickstrom said, as well as raffles.

On Friday, they’ll be raffling off a Milwaukee cordless drill set; on Saturday, a Webber gas grill and on Sunday, a two burner Blackstone griddle.

In addition, on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a number of things to snack on, including pizza and tri-tip samples on Saturday, free coffee and donuts on Sunday, and free ice cream both days.

The official ribbon cutting will be taking place at 10 a.m. Friday.

Grand opening hours for this weekend are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Ace Hardware is located at 971 Topsy Ln. It will offer a wide range of Jewish services, classes, and holiday programming.

“We are thrilled to establish a home for Jewish life in Carson City,” says Rabbi Levi Sputz. “For years, local Jews had to travel elsewhere for Jewish programs. Now, we are proud to create a space where every Jew can feel welcomed, connected, and supported — right here in their own backyard.”

A Community-Driven Initiative
Rabbi Levi and Chana Sputz first moved to Reno to establish the Chabad Learning Center, offering Torah classes for adults across Northern Nevada. Over the past year, their outreach expanded to Carson City, and following an overwhelming response to local events — such as the public Menorah lighting at Bob McFadden Plaza, which brought together local officials and families — the Sputzes saw a clear need for a permanent Jewish space. The new center will be “an address for everything Jewish,” offering Shabbat dinners, Torah classes, children’s programs, and holiday celebrations for Jews of all backgrounds.

“Carson City is a vibrant and diverse community,” says Chana Sputz. “We want to ensure that every Jew — whether they’ve lived here for decades or just moved—has access to the traditions, teachings, and joy that make Jewish life so special.”

Global Mission, Local Impact

As part of the global Chabad-Lubavitch movement, Chabad of Carson City is inspired by the teachings of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory. “The Rebbe taught that every Jew matters, no matter where they are,” says Rabbi Sputz. “That’s why Chabad centers have opened in cities large and small worldwide. We’re honored to bring that vision to Carson City.”

With more than 3,500 centers in over 100 countries, Chabad continues to create inclusive, welcoming environments for Jewish learning and connection. Chabad of Carson City will extend that legacy by providing a permanent Jewish presence in a community that, until now, has lacked one.

Join the Celebration

Chabad of Carson City will open in time for the upcoming High Holidays, offering a traditional Rosh Hashanah dinner and a public Shofar blowing to welcome the Jewish New Year. The officer ran the license plate and discovered the registration was suspended, the report states.

The deputy made contact with the driver, who attempted to get out of the vehicle. The officer instructed the man to return to the vehicle but he didn't listen and threw his keys onto the roof of his car and started digging through his pockets, according to the report.

The officer demanded the man take his hands out of his pockets. He was detained. The man stated he should be arrested as he already knew what was happening. The officer informed the man he only stopped him for the suspended registration and that his behavior contributed to him being detained due to not being normal behavior indicative to a traffic stop. The officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol on the man's breath as he spoke. He had a suspended license and no proof of insurance, the report states.

He was informed of the standardized field sobriety tests. He denied drinking alcohol but said he had a drink three hours prior. He showed signs of impairment. He refused a preliminary breath test. Bail: $2,500.

— A Washoe Valley man was arrested Sunday for two misdemeanor outside agency warrants, one issued out of Virginia City Township and the other, Dayton township. Bail $755 cash.

— All information for the crime log (unless otherwise noted) comes from the arrest reports supplied by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, and is considered by law to be public information. All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The policy of Carson Now is to name anyone who is arrested for a felony offense.
News Mon, 23 Sep 2024 19:50:09 +0000 Jeff Munson 132548 at https://www.carsonnow.org Carson City School Board to discuss new employee protection policies, restorative discipline https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/23/2024/carson-city-school-board-discuss-new-employee-protection-policies-restorative-disci
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/23/2024/carson-city-school-board-discuss-new-employee-protection-policies-restorative-disci" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Event Date:

September 24, 2024 (All day)

by Kelsey Penrose

The next Carson City School Board meeting will take place Tuesday, Sept. 24 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Community Center locate at 851 E.
