Carson City emergency crews called to crash on I-580 north of Arrowhead

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies and Nevada State Police were called to a traffic crash late Saturday afternoon on I-580 northbound north of Arrowhead.

Carson City dispatch alerted emergency crews of the crash at around 4:50 p.m. There are three people said to be in the vehicle and at this time no injuries are reported. The driver apparently hit the center median divider.

Motorists can expect delays.

Every month, Carson City Park Rangers offer various ranger-led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

Online registration is often required so Park Rangers have a proper head count. All programs are subject to cancellation due to Park Ranger availability; registered participants will be notified.

Join the Carson City Parks Rangers for a historical tour of Silver Saddle Ranch and explore the Red House! From mining to ranching to outdoor recreation, Silver Saddle Ranch and the Carson River have been integral parts of Carson City's history and remain important to this day. This tour will take you around the property and dive deep into the historical roots of the area.

The trail is considered "easy" according to the IMBA and will be less than a half mile. This program is focused more on historical content than a hiking adventure, bring your thinking cap, not your hiking pack!

Sportsbook favors Mardy Fish, Tony Romo to win American Century Championship at Tahoe

Former champions Tony Romo and Mardy Fish, along with active pro-athletes Austin Reaves and Joe Pavelski, are the top-line favorites to win the 35th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, according to Caesars Sportsbook odds.

The July 12-14 tournament will also include the Kelce brothers, with Travis (200/1) predicted to place better than his older brother Jason (350/1), who will be a first-time player this year.

Fish, the 2020 champion, is favored to win with 5/2 odds, followed by Romo (15/4) for the July 12-14 competition. Fish placed 2nd in the 2023 tournament behind champion Stephen Curry, who is unable to defend his title this year as he pursues a gold medal for USA Basketball at the Olympic Games in Paris. Romo, former All-Pro quarterback and now prominent NFL TV analyst, is a three-time American Century Champion, winning the tournament in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

The third choice on the board is first-time participant Austin Reaves, the Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard, who declared himself the best golfer in the NBA last year. Reaves sits at 5/1, ahead of Dallas Stars center Joe Pavelski (11/2), who was knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the semifinals just a few weeks ago. At 6/1 odds are Hall of Fame pitcher and baseball TV analyst John Smoltz, three-time American Century Champion (2015-17) and Mark Mulder, the former All-Star pitcher for the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals.

Former star NBA player and head coach Vinny Del Negro, the 2021 tournament champion, sits at 18/1.

Actor Jack Wagner, a two-time American Century Champion (2006, 2011), is listed at 35/1.

The longest shot on the board is Charles Barkley 7500/1. Caesars Sportsbook also has a proposition bet on Barkley, offering betters the opportunity to wager that he will finish in the top 75 of the 90-plus player field.

Annika Sorenstam stands at 7/1 as she embarks on her fifth American Century Championship with four top-six finishes over the years.

Other prominent golfers and their odds to win include NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers (28/1), and first-time participants Trevor Lawrence (350/1) and Joe Flacco (150/1). Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson is listed at 125/1. Rodgers finished fifth in the 2023 tournament, his best performance to date.

Some of the top-performing entertainment stars participating in this year’s championship are country music singer Jake Owen (28/1), celebrity chef Bobby Flay (150/1), and America’s Funniest Home Videos host Alfonso Ribeiro (175/1). Owen and Ribeiro placed in the top 25 in the 2023 competition.

Have you ever wanted to learn the old art of Blacksmithing? Early smiths made wagon parts, handmade tools, shaped ornamental pieces, horseshoes, hinges and just about anything to having to do with working metal into a desired shape or purpose.

Saturday, July 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Donovan Mill in Silver City, is an introductory class on how to build, light and maintain a coal forge fire with a hand cranked blower, proper hammering techniques, drawing, pointing, twisting, punching and how to work hot steel over a coal forge. Students will take home the basic knowledge of forging and their own handmade forged decorative article.

Carson City area weather: Temperatures well into 100s prompts Excessive Heat Warning

A long duration heatwave will bring a moderate to major heat risk across the Sierra, Carson City and surrounding counties Saturday through the middle of next week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue an Excessive Heat Warning.

Hot daytime temperatures near 105 degrees and limited overnight cooling with morning lows in the mid 60s to mid 70s this weekend into next week will result in a prolonged period of "major heat risk and heat health impacts, according to NWS forecasters.

The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Wednesday and extends to throughout Carson City, Carson Valley, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral and Washoe counties. Excessive heat warnings are also up Saturday across the Silver State.

Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

People are advise to never leave children and pets unattended in vehicles as car interiors reach lethal temperatures within minutes. It is also advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911

NV Energy has advised customers to be prepared for potential outages due to strain on the power grid from the extreme temperatures and fire risk.

"Periods of extreme heat may cause isolated issues on NV Energy’s infrastructure, including equipment failure that can result in outages," the utility states in a news release. "NV Energy will have extra crews on standby throughout the weekend to quickly and safely respond to any outages that may occur. We appreciate your patience and understanding, as our crews may need to work in extreme heat conditions to make the necessary repairs and restore power safely."

NV Energy's advises customers to review its outage preparation tips to prepare ahead of any possible outage. Customers can also report outages and stay up to date on the number of outages, outage causes, number of customers impacted, and estimated time of restoration in the link here.

The utility offers the following tips that can help customers stay cool and conserve energy during time of extreme heat:

— Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.

— If your A/C unit is on the ground, keep the area around it clean and free of obstructions to maintain airflow.
Use the energy saver options for as many devices/appliances as possible.

— Keep windows closed. Keep outside air out and inside air in.

— Run full loads in your washer and dryer, and use "solar drying."

— If you are away for the weekend, turn your thermostat up.

— During periods of extreme heat, the National Weather Service recommends staying hydrated and avoid the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"When You're Hot, You're Hot," an evening of big-band music by the Mile High Jazz Band with singer Jakki Ford, on is happening Tuesday, July 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., indoors at Gina's Good Life Music & Lounge, 507 N. Carson Street inside the Carson Nugget.

"When You're Hot, You're Hot" features the 17-member band playing old favorites and new swinging, big-band selections, including "Georgia on My Mind," "The Heat's On," Orilla Del Mar," and more. Jakki Ford will sing "Secret Love," "Blues in the Night," "The Look of Love," and other great tunes accompanied by the band.

Admission is free, and suggested donation is $10 per person for the band.

Mile High Jazz Band performances and educational activities are supported in part by grants from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, Carson City, and by memberships and donations. Brushfire reported in Dayton, now in mop up

A brushfire that occurred in Dayton Friday evening is currently in the mop up phase.

The fire which was reported just south east of Highway 50 is estimated to have burned around two to three acres and no structures were in danger.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Douglas County beaches celebrate successful 4th of July with new parking program

Douglas County is pleased to announce the successful implementation of a new parking program at its beaches during the 4th of July holiday.

This year, approximately 250 cars were parked, a significant reduction from the 800 to 900 cars seen in previous years. This change has led to a notable decrease in overcrowding and an enhanced overall user experience.

With a parking fee of $100 per car, the estimated revenue ranges between $20,000 and $23,000. It is important to note that Douglas County residents were exempt from this fee. The reduction in vehicle numbers contributed to improved sanitation efforts, further elevating the beach experience for visitors.

“We are very pleased with the initial results of our new parking program,” said Scott Morgan, Assistant County Manager. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are committed to conducting a final assessment over the weekend to identify any areas for further improvement.”

Additionally, on July 4th, 23 cars were ticketed and towed, marking the most successful parking compliance initiative in Douglas County’s history. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the proactive measures taken by the county.

Douglas deputies make July 4 arrests for DUI, child neglect, minor consuming and more

The July 4th celebration drew thousands to the Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Nevada area and its beaches.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) strategically deployed personnel to ensure safety and enforce regulations, protecting everyone enjoying the holiday. Several arrests were made for various crimes during the festivities.

DCSO, in collaboration with the Nevada State Police, patrolled Highway 50, focusing on no-parking zones, and removed approximately 23 illegally parked vehicles. DCSO issued more than 18 citations for a variety of traffic violations and other parking violations.

DCSO would like to extend gratitude to their partners for their contributions to a safe and successful holiday: Douglas County, Nevada State Police, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Storey County Sheriff’s Office, US Forest Service, and Aramark Corp.

Airplane makes emergency landing on US-50 in Dayton

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, a plane made an emergency landing on Highway 50 at Pradere in the Dayton area on Friday.

At approximately 12:17 p.m. the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol responded to a report of a propeller plane that landed on the US-50 eastbound travel lanes at mile marker 5 in Lyon County. (Near the Dayton airport).

No vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported from the incident.

Two eastbound travel lanes on the US50 were blocked temporarily. Traffic was able to get through in single lanes.

The plane was taken, via US-50 eastbound, to Silver Springs Airport. The incident is being investigated by the FAA.
