It’s a fun, social way for people of all ages to be active. But the recent boom in popularity has brought a rise in pickleball-related injuries. Here’s how to stay safe while enjoying yourself on the pickleball court.

Get in the Game
If you’re new to pickleball, think of it as a mashup of badminton, tennis, table tennis, and whiffle ball. It’s played, indoors or out, on a badminton-sized court with a net a little lower than a tennis net. The equipment consists of a lightweight paddle and a plastic, baseball-sized ball.

Pickleball has a reputation for being tennis lite. But don’t let that lull you into carelessness. In older players, the number of pickleball injuries per year now rivals the number of tennis injuries.

Be Aware of the Risks
Playing pickleball can boost your health and well-being. But it may also cause injuries, such as:

Ankle sprain: An overstretched or torn ligament near an ankle, often caused by falling or a twisting motion

Hamstring strain: A pull or tear in a muscle on the back of the thigh, often due to changing direction quickly

Wrist or finger fracture: A broken bone that may result from the force of falling onto an outstretched hand

Tennis elbow: Inflammation or tiny tears in the tendons around the elbow caused by damage from overuse

Eye injuries: Such as tearing of the retina, which may result from being struck in the eye by a ball

Know How to Play It Safe

These precautions can help you avoid getting into a pickle on the pickleball court:

— Stretch before and after every game. Tight muscles are more easily injured.

— Wear court shoes made for racquet sports. They offer better stability for side-to-side motion than running or walking shoes do.

— Don protective sports glasses or goggles. Make sure they have shatterproof polycarbonate lenses. If you play outdoors, look for UV protection, as well.

— Consider taking lessons to learn proper form. A qualified instructor can show you how to hold your paddle correctly and keep your feet stable.

Good technique on the court improves your odds of staying injury-free — and winning matches!

Kyle Swanson, MD, FAAOS is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Tahoe Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. It will feature music, live auction, raffle, food, drinks and plenty of fun, organizers say.

The purpose of the fundraiser is to raise money to give to a family or families who have experienced a cancer diagnosis of a loved one. The idea is to raise money for families so they can vacation or set aside fun time with their loved one, said Crystal's mother, Loretta Fagan, who has established Crystal's Crusade with the idea that is similar to Make a Wish.

The event is put on by Loretta Fagan (Crystal's Mom), Alicia Wilson (Crystal's sister) and Ryan Briscoe (Crystal's husband). This is an open, community event and everyone is invited.

Crystal passed away from cancer 7 years ago, her mother said. She was 31 years old. From the time she was diagnosed to the time she passed her family made it a point to go on vacations and just have fun.

"So often, with a cancer diagnosis you are unable to think about or even afford a vacation. That is what we want the money we give the family to go for, to make memories," said Fagan.
Announcements Mon, 27 May 2024 21:01:39 +0000 Jeff Munson 130874 at https://carsonnow.org Northern Nevada landscapes and backyards: Gardeners are busy as bees https://carsonnow.org/story/05/27/2024/northern-nevada-landscapes-and-backyards-gardeners-are-busy-bees
<fb:like href="https://carsonnow.org/story/05/27/2024/northern-nevada-landscapes-and-backyards-gardeners-are-busy-bees" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By JoAnne Skelly

This is a gardener’s most active time of year. Here are the tasks I was doing this past week.

After getting our sprinkler system fixed, I finally fertilized the lawn with a 21-0-0 fertilizer. I watered the lawn deeply before putting down the nitrogen and then watered it thoroughly afterward to keep the salts in the fertilizer from burning the grass. I fertilized my flowers too, hoping to encourage more prolific and longer lasting blooms.

Any good flower food, or a 16-16-16 will work. There are great organic or traditional products available. My preference is a water-soluble product I add to my watering can.

I pruned the dead flowers off the forsythia right after they finished blooming to allow the wood for next year’s flower buds to develop. I always seal each of the pruning cuts with white glue, like school glue, to keep the beneficial wasps from boring down into the canes to lay eggs.

Otherwise, their boring tunnels kill off the stem. I’m pruning the finished lilac blooms too. The rule of thumb is to prune spring flowering shrubs back right after blooming to get those all-important flower buds coming on this year’s growth for next year’s blooms.

I pruned the dead branches in my old-fashioned wandering roses. I always seal every rose stem I cut with the glue for the same reason as I do the forsythia. I also sterilize my shears between cuts with a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol to prevent disease transmission.

My irises are in bloom. To make the flowers furthest down the stem open and make the blooming time last longer, I pick off the dead flowers every morning. I always stop to smell the irises because their gentle fragrance is wonderful. Many people don’t realize irises are fragrant.

I spend a lot of time hand-watering. It’s not an efficient way to get water to plants, but it is my Zen time. Some of our trees grow outside the automatic irrigation system, so I visit them once a week with hose-end sprinklers. I have what I call a cone-head spruce, a dwarf Alberta spruce, that I hose off every day to prevent spider mites. That’s usually the problem with these plants when there is dead or dying bits. The mites, who thrive in a dusty dry environment, suck the juice out of the needles.

Of course I’m taking care of the birds, washing and filling the hummingbird feeder every few days.

Our enjoyable work is never done!

— JoAnne Skelly is Associate Professor & Extension Educator, Emerita, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. So I dug down into a dusty bin to find out if any one of those ancient relics holds any water today. I shall share Sierra Nevada College here (abbreviated) and let you be the judge.

For the class of 2006 I have some good news and some bad. The good news is, as Bergson tells us, “Life, in all its color, warmth and complexity, is far greater than any intelligible formulation of it.”

The bad news is, after today, the word “party” is no longer a verb. You are now a Republican, a Democrat, or an Independent. So keep in mind what our friend Mark Twain advocates, “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

Yours will be the first generation whose foremost responsibility, whose foremost obligation, will be to stand up in an over-heated environment and shout, “Fire!”

It will take an intellectual process to predict the impact that greenhouse gasses will have on our environment in the year 2100.

You have the intellect to make the predictions and deal with the problems. And, to facilitate this process, Sierra Nevada College will soon unveil the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, just behind us here, 45,000 square feet of scientific space dedicated to the study of our Alpine ecosystem.

I come today equipped to offer our graduates one hundred life lessons, but will spare you, and offer five for your consideration.

Life lesson #1: Money, you might be surprised to find out, money is not for throwing from the back of trains. Save your money. Don’t gamble. But if you do gamble, don’t split your tens. And don’t waste time on Keno, it’s a 17% house-hold.

Life lesson #2: You must travel, far. St. Augustine tells us, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” In your travels you will eventually come to appreciate what Mark Russell discovered: “The rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline luggage.”

Always pack a change of underwear in your carry-on.

Life lesson #3: Read good books. The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.

Today’s literature is mostly about sex and not much about having children, whereas life is the other way around. And when you consider having children, remember this caveat from Martin Mull: “Having children is like having a bowling alley installed in your head.”

For life lesson #4 we can thank Marcus Aurelius: “Waste no time debating what a good man should be…be one.”

And as an addendum to life lesson #4 we can turn to Robert Frost: "You have freedom when you’re easy in your harness."

For those who aspire to go into acting, I offer life lesson #5 from George Burns: “Acting is about sincerity. If you can fake that you’ve got it made.” George used to call me on my birthday, God rest his beautiful soul. And I asked him the last time I spoke to him, “George, I understand you’re still going out with young women...why!?” He said, “Because their stories are shorter.”

Yes, on that note, I can hear William Hazlitt, an Essayist from the 1830’s, shouting these words to our graduates of today: “Look up, laugh loud, talk big, keep the color in your cheek and the fire in your eye, adorn your person, maintain your health, your beauty and your animal spirits.”

Sierra Nevada College class of 2006: Have a good life — have a good time — and God’s speed.

— For more than 35 years, in more than 4,000 performances, columnist and Chautauquan McAvoy Layne has been dedicated to preserving the wit and wisdom of “The Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope,” Mark Twain. As Layne puts it: “It’s like being a Monday through Friday preacher, whose sermon, though not reverently pious, is fervently American."

Go here for the spoken word version of this and other columns.
Opinion Mon, 27 May 2024 00:35:05 +0000 Jeff Munson 130868 at https://carsonnow.org
