Carson City emergency crews called to crash at South Carson and Moses

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Saturday morning to a vehicle crash that happened in the area of South Carson Street and Moses Street.

The crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. and involves two vehicles. Injuries were reported and an ambulance was called to the scene.

Motorists can expect delays. The cause is under investigation.

Ford Bronco owners show their shiny rides at Carson City's Mills Park

Proud owners of the rugged Ford Bronco and all of its 4-wheel drive incarnations that have spanned multiple generations have gathered at Mills Park in Carson City this week for the annual Bronco Super Celebration.

The celebration kicked off Wednesday and continues until Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event has brought Ford Bronco aficionados from throughout Nevada and Northern California to the capital city area for a four-day stretch of fall on and off-road rides, including drives to gold mining towns, ghost towns, Lake Tahoe as well as exploring the off road and rugged adventures of Prison Hill OHV and recreation area.

The public is welcome to stop by, enjoy the festivities and talk to the owners.

Happening today: Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary in Carson City celebrates 30th year

Celebrating three decades of turning the round, orange members of the squash family into memorable Halloween carving traditions, Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City will host its 30th annual Pumpkin Patch today, Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024.

The Pumpkin Patch will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, located at 2800 Saliman Road in Carson City. The community is invited to this annual tradition, which brings hearty pumpkin pickings, food and fun. All proceeds go toward Seeliger classrooms to help purchase instructional supplies, pay for field trips and extras for the children.

This year's fall festival will feature carnival games, food trucks, wagon rides, a dunk tank, raffles, a silent auction, a bake sale, a cake walk, vendors, prizes, a petting zoo, pumpkins and other family fun.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless

Feeding Pets of the Homeless, in partnership with FISH, Riverside Veterinary Hospital, CASI, Nevada Humane Society, and Carson Tahoe Health, will be hosting a free pet wellness clinic for pets of unhoused and low-income individuals on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FISH (Friends In Service Helping) in Carson City.

This clinic will provide essential services, including free vaccinations, wellness checks, spay and neuter vouchers, microchipping, pet food, and pet supplies. Carson Tahoe Health will also offer free flu shots for humans during the event. Attendees will also receive Pets & People dog treats provided by the nonprofit I Am Boundless, whose treats are made by adults with disabilities in Dayton, OH. The goal of the clinic is to ensure that pets and their families remain healthy, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

“We’re honored to come together with such dedicated partners to provide vital care to pets and their owners in need,” said Genevieve Frederick, founder of Feeding Pets of the Homeless. “These clinics are a true testament to the power of community organizations working together for the benefit of all.”

Veterinarians and volunteers from Riverside Veterinary Hospital will be on-site to administer care, and CASI (Carson Animal Services Initiative) will offer spay and neuter vouchers to qualifying pet owners. The Nevada Humane Society will also be issuing Carson City dog licenses and offering microchipping services.

The clinic will be held at FISH, a long-standing partner of Feeding Pets of the Homeless. “We are proud to host this clinic once again,” said Jim Peckham, executive director of FISH. “Not only do we serve people in need, but we also care for their pets, and this event is critical to providing holistic care for those needing a hand up in our community.”

This event is made possible through the generous support of local and national sponsors:

• I Am Boundless, is a statewide nonprofit in Ohio that is providing Pets & People dog treats to attendees. Each batch of these treats is made by adults with disabilities. Pets & People offers vocational training, which fosters a spirit of inclusivity and empowerment.

• Jamie Brianna’s Legacy Fund, offering financial support to ensure the clinic’s services reach as many pets and owners as possible.

Plumas Bank announces 'Community Pride' photo competition winners

Plumas Bank is pleased to announce the winners of their “Community Pride” Photo Contest for 2024. Participants, located in the 10 northern Nevada and California communities in which Plumas Bank serves, submitted photos over the summer from June to July 2024.

The photo contest asked for pictures of scenic landscapes, local main streets, and countryside landmarks that capture the surrounding atmosphere of Plumas Bank’s locations. Winners were selected with input from a guest panel consisting of judges in the professional arts, accompanied by open voting for a “People’s Choice” award.

Partnership Carson City leads upcoming drug round-up for safe medication disposal

Partnership Carson City is hosting its bi-annual Prescription Drug Take Back event on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event aims to raise awareness about the safe disposal of unused and expired prescription medications, helping to protect the community and the environment.

“This event is not just about getting rid of old medications,” said Samantha Szoyka, Deputy Director of Partnership Carson City. “It’s about keeping our loved ones safe and protecting our environment by ensuring these substances don’t end up in the wrong hands or in our water supply.”

Residents are encouraged to bring their unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, prescription liquids, pet medications and sharps (syringes) to one of four convenient drop-off locations
in Carson City:

In addition to drug disposal, Naloxone (Narcan) will be available at the event. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Carson City Sheriff's Office ask for help locating missing man

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office requests assistance locating a missing person. Christopher Henderson, 40, was reported missing by family members on Oct. 9, 2024.

Christopher was last seen near his home in central Carson City in the early morning of Oct. 9. His vehicle was spotted in Las Vegas on Oct. 10, 2024, at around 4:40 p.m. in the 2800 block of East Charleston Boulevard.

His disappearance is described as unusual by his family, but foul play is not suspected currently.

Christopher was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with cutoff sleeves and gray and black work pants. He is 6’ tall, 210 pounds, bald, with hazel eyes and a beard extending several inches below his chin. He was driving a gold 2006 Ford F-250 with an equipment rack bearing Nevada license plate 960N25.

Anyone with any information on Christopher’s disappearance or current location is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at the information below.

Celebrity Chef Jonathan Zaragoza Provides Cooking Demo for Carson City Culinary Students

Culinary Art students at Carson Middle School were in for a rare treat this morning and Monday as acclaimed Celebrity Chef and Restaurateur Jonathan Zaragoza hosted cooking demonstrations and sampling.

Known for his mastery of Mexican cuisine and his innovative take on traditional dishes, Chef Zaragoza and the Chartwells K12 team also provided samples of bacon-wrapped hotdogs with caramelized onions, peppers, pico de gallo and roasted corn at Eagle Valley Middle School during lunch.

The events were part of the Global Eats initiative and coincided with the school’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Chef Zaragoza graciously shared his culinary expertise with students, offering them firsthand insight into the world of professional cooking. The school events not only featured delicious cooking demonstrations but also highlighted the significance of cultural culinary traditions.

Zaragoza is renowned for his appearances on the Netflix show Taco Chronicles as well as a cameo appearance in the hit TV series The Bear, but he is better known as a Chicago-based chef where he has gained a reputation for elevating Mexican flavors and techniques. He was raised in Chicago’s Southside by a tight-knight family with strong cooking roots. He gained experience working at premier restaurants in Chicago, first becoming a chef at age 22. In 2007, Zaragoza opened Birrieria Zaragoza giving him a platform to create and continue learning.

Chef Zaragoza’s path has taken him throughout Mexico, deep into its rich culinary heritage, to bring its traditions with him to London, Dubai, Paris, Australia and all across the United States. His work has also been highlighted in prestigious culinary magazines, further cementing his place as one of the country’s leading chefs.

Nevada Treasury Announces Recipients of the 2024 Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship

The Nevada Treasury is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship. The Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship awards up to $5,000 each to two students in Northern Nevada and in Southern Nevada respectively, who are majoring in elementary or secondary education with the intent of teaching in Nevada.

The selected scholarship recipients include:

Amelie May — University of Nevada, Reno
Lesly Diaz — University of Nevada, Reno
Mackenzie Baack — University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Riley Wargo — University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Amelie May is a senior student at the University of Nevada, Reno, pursuing a degree in the Integrated Elementary Teaching Program. Actively engaged in community service through her role in Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority and her work with organizations like the Desert Research Institute and United Way, she is dedicated to education and community outreach. Currently completing her student teaching at Lemelson STEM Academy, Amelie aims to teach in Title I schools across Nevada to support under-resourced communities.

“I am incredibly honored to receive this scholarship as it supports my passion for teaching and motivates me to continue to work in supporting under-resourced communities," said May. "This opportunity brings me one step closer to making a positive impact in the lives of my future students."

Lesly Diaz, a Reno native and attended Title I schools, is currently attending the University of Nevada, Reno. Inspired by her experience in the Dean’s Future Scholars program, she is pursuing a career in education with a commitment to teaching excellence in Nevada.

“This scholarship is an incredible opportunity for me as it supports my journey to become an educator and give back to the community that shaped me,” said Diaz. “With this scholarship, I plan to continue striving for excellence in education here in Nevada."

Mackenzie Baack is a senior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with minors in Mathematics and Computer Science. She is actively engaged in campus life through organizations like Alpha Gamma Delta, the First-Generation Club, the UNLV Farmer’s Market, and the UNLV Community Garden. Mackenzie aims to become a Computer Science teacher in Nevada and is working toward obtaining the Advanced Computer Science endorsement.

"The Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship not only helps me financially with pursuing my dreams, but it will allow me to focus on my studies in computer science,” said Baack. “Computer science is my passion, and this scholarship brings me closer to achieving my goal of making a positive impact in the classroom and community post-graduation."

Riley Wargo is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with plans to become a high school English teacher in CCSD. She is passionate about teaching diverse literature and connecting classic works like Shakespeare to the modern world.

"I am deeply grateful for this scholarship and the financial support it provides," said Wargo. "It allows me to focus on my education and passion for teaching without the stress of financial burdens. This support is invaluable as I work toward becoming a high school English teacher in CCSD."

A virtual celebration will be held later this year to further honor the four Memorial Scholarship recipients.

"Congratulations to the outstanding recipients of the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship," said Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine. “As you strive to become educators, you are not only shaping your own futures but also making a profound impact on the lives of countless students across Nevada.
