Northern Nevada backyards and gardens: Time is right to hook up the sprinklers

Today was a very productive day working in the yard. The cold weather kept me in far too long recently. I wanted to be outside. The temperature was perfect with a bright blue sky and little wind.

One of my first chores was hooking the hoses and sprinklers up again. I had unhooked everything to prevent freezing, or so I thought. The first hose leaked like a sieve from the faucet and hose connection. So, I put that task on hold until my husband could figure it out.

Then, I turned on the automatic irrigation system to give the lawns and trees a good soak. Three out of the five stations had problems. One had a head that was completely busted off, shooting water like the Bellagio fountain. Another station has an underground leak and a head that won’t shut off. Finally, the last station had two heads that were stuck.

Being early in the season, this is fairly normal for a system that is 35 years old in some areas. However, it also required a trip to two box stores for sprinkler heads, hose parts, washers and so on. I dug up the heads and my husband installed and adjusted the spray distance and width.

My neighbor Roni loaned me her short-handled drain spade which simplified the job. I can’t believe that in 35 years of digging up irrigation heads and lines I have never had one of these great tools. In the end, turning the irrigation system on was an all-day task. But happily the yard is being watered as I write this.

Roni and I were talking about the difference in our yards. I told her that my advice to anyone putting in a new landscape would be to do as they had done. They have a manageable lawn for their dog. That’s the only high-flow overhead irrigation they have. This reduces weeds and sprinkler problems. All the rest of their beautiful yard is on drip systems.

They have larger mainlines and drip tubes without emitters, which keeps things from clogging. At our house, 90 percent of the irrigation is high-flow overhead sprays, because that was what was here when we bought the house. Our big trees had 20 years of lawn irrigation before we got here. Taking out thousands of square feet of lawn without damaging tree roots would have been quite challenging. Trying to cover all the roots with drip irrigation after removing the lawn would have also been tough.

C-Hill Foundation readies repairs for Carson City hillside landmark, volunteers sought for help

A local couple's efforts to get the flag on C-Hill in Carson City repaired is well underway, with the president of the C-Hill Foundation working on getting the needed material.

Foundation President Dan Mooney, who is the original manufacturer of the flag, is actively working on repairing flag material from his shop in Minden. The foundation is accepting donations, which can be made by contacting Mooney at (775) 240-1316 or email: Nevada4@aol.com

The couple who are spearheading efforts to get people up on the hill to help Mooney, Terry and Tara Kilfian of Breaking Addiction Ministries, are seeking volunteers to help with the efforts to help move the material when Mooney is ready fabricating the new panels.

The efforts came about after the couple were hiking C-Hill, noticed damage done to the tiles, and wanted to help with repair efforts. Go here for original story.

Through natural weather cycles and some minor vandalism, the condition of the flag is waning and in need of repairs, something that the foundation will take on.

Carson City will soon likely see the results of a long-held tradition of the changing of the C on the hillside — often done surreptitiously overnight — to reflect the senior graduating class year. And then, a few weeks (sometimes a couple months) later, it gets changed back. As of Sunday, the C remains as is.

Dayton Pop Warner announces strength and conditioning camp in June

As the summer sun begins to heat up, so does the excitement at Dayton Pop Warner as local athletes gear up for a two-day strength and conditioning camp.

Set to take place June 29-30, held at Dayton High School. this camp aims to sharpen the skills of budding football stars from all over Northern Nevada including participants from Dayton Pop Warner and Biggest Little City Football Academy.

Organized by a team of seasoned coaches and fitness experts, the camp promises to provide participants with a comprehensive training experience designed to enhance their physical strength, agility, and endurance. With a focus on football-specific conditioning drills and techniques, attendees can expect to push their limits and elevate their game to new heights.

"We're thrilled to bring this opportunity to the athletes of Northern Nevada remarked Coach Richard Vasquez one of the lead organizers of the camp. "It's not just about building muscle or increasing speed; it's about instilling discipline, resilience, and a winning mindset."

The camp will feature a dynamic mix of activities, including strength training sessions, speed and agility drills, as well as nutrition and recovery workshops. Participants will have the chance to learn from experienced coaches and trainers who have worked with athletes at all levels, from local leagues to the professional ranks.

"We want to give these young athletes the tools they need to succeed, both on and off the field," said Coach George Freeman another key figure behind the event. "By focusing on proper technique, injury prevention, and the importance of rest and recovery, we're laying the foundation for long-term success."

In addition to honing their athletic abilities, participants will also have the opportunity to connect with fellow athletes and coaches, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that is essential for success in football and beyond.

"The bonds formed at events like these can last a lifetime," said Coach Michael Hayes. "We want these athletes to leave feeling not only physically stronger but also part of a supportive community that will cheer them on every step of the way."

With spots filling up fast, organizers encourage interested athletes to register early to secure their place at the Dayton Strength and Conditioning Camp. Hello spring: Bear looking for breakfast lumbers through Carson City yard

Sunday in Carson City brought out a black bear with a shiny brown coat that lumbered through a yard in early morning light, probably looking for breakfast.

The bear was spotted along Pinion Hills Drive, near the bridge at the Carson River, behind Buzzy's Ranch in East Carson City.

Carson City area road report for week of May 13-19

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 13-19, 2024. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— 2nd Street between Carson Street and Curry Street will be closed to westbound traffic from April 8, 2024 to June 30, 2025 for construction.

— Center Drive between Topsy Lane and Rabe Way will be closed to thru traffic from Wednesday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

— On Saturday, May 18th, Stetina’s Paydirt Gravel Race will be taking place in South Carson City. Expect rolling road closures for the whole day.

— Telegraph Street between Stewart Street and the intersection of Valley Street will be closed on Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road/utility work:
— Carson Street between Adams Street and Park Street will have reduced southbound lanes from Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

— Conestoga Drive near the intersection of Sigstrom Drive will have reduced lanes from Thursday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

La Motte Drive near the intersection of Arrowhead Drive will have reduced lanes from Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Maison Way, near and at the intersection of Newman Place, will have reduced lanes from Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Kids to Parks Day Celebration at Mills Park on Saturday, May 18th

“Kids to Parks Day is a national day of outdoor play celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. The day connects kids and families with their local, state, and national parks and public lands through thousands of park events that promote discovery and exploration in the great outdoors.” – National Park Trust

The community is invited to Mills Park from 10:00am – 2:00pm on Saturday, May 18, 2024, for the 6th annual Kids to Parks Day event here in Carson City! The celebration will include music, food, outdoor activities from local organizations, educational booths, and the Junior Park Ranger Olympics! The whole community is invited to join in on this fun day of outdoor play!

Schedule of Events:
10:00am - Mayor Lori Bagwell will read the Kids to Parks Day 2024 official proclamation and start the day
10:30am - Jr Park Ranger Olympics Official Start
1:30pm - Jr Park Ranger Olympics End
2:00pm - Kids to Parks Day event ends, kids encouraged to visit other parks and keep celebrating the day
4:00pm – Wheelhouse Best Trick Competition Ends

The Junior Ranger Olympics will be a fun obstacle course consisting of 5 stages that’ll test Carson City Junior Park Rangers on the skills they need to become a future Park Ranger. Skills that will be tested include Packing a backpack, trail maintenance, physical agility, map and brochure sorting, first aid, and navigation. The course will kick off at 10:30am and end at 1:30pm. It’s open to kids in grade levels 1st - 3rd and 4th - 6th. Prizes will be given to all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the two age groups.

The Wheel House will be hosting a Best Trick Competition at the skate park. They will be providing music for the event and setting up skating obstacles. They will also be conducting trick competitions and giving away prizes. Kids can begin signing up at 10:00am.

Bone Appetit Bar-B-Que Grill will be offering food and drinks for the event and will have a special kid’s menu exclusively for Kids to Parks Day. Scoups Ice Cream & Soup Bar will also be offering ice cream options.

Other booths and activities will include: America First Credit Union, Bee City, Carson City Health and Human Services, Carson City Library, Carson City Railroad Association, Computer Corps, Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, GNCU, The Greenhouse Project, Grocery Outlet, Messy Kids Art School, Muscle Power, Nevada State Parks, Nevada Department of Wildlife, River Wranglers, Salvation Army, Western NV Safe Routes to School, and W.O.L.F!

The Misfits Theater Group presents Gold Casino or Bar Be Tender in May

The Misfits Theater Group presents its 2024 Spring Production: Gold Casino or Bar Be Tender on the weekends of May 18-19 and May 24, 25 and 26, 2024.

The Gold Casino is owned by an escaped felon hiding from the law. The villain discovers there is gold hidden in the bar of the casino, and he plans to steal the gold and burn the casino to the ground. The felon, heroine bartender, and an undercover cop foil the villain’s evil plan! The casino is saved—and romance is in the air!

Gold Casino/Bar Be Tender performances will be at the Dayton Community Center located in historic old town Dayton at 164 Pike Street. Call Lisa at 775-315-1085 to make a reservation. Ticket cost is $15 per seat.

Evening performances start at 7 pm on May 18, 24 and 25. Two scheduled matinees will start at 2 pm on Sunday, May 19 and 26. A handicap drop off zone will be located at the bottom of the handicap ramp in front of the Community Center. Proceeds from the May 24 performance will benefit the Dayton Food Pantry!

Native Plant Sale May 18 at River View Park in Gardnerville

UNR Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County are hosting a Native plant sale on Saturday, May 18 at the River Fork Ranch (The Nature Conservancy) located at 381 Genoa Ln. Minden, NV.

The event is from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

All plants are a first come, first serve basis.

All proceeds will benefit the UNR Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County. Plants have been grown by The Washoe State Tree Nursery.

This spectacular display is caused by a severe solar storm that is expected to continue through the weekend.
