Widespread NV Energy power outage grips Douglas County

A widespread power outage Saturday evening has affected much of Douglas County, including Minden, Gardnerville and areas of the south county and Kingsbury. NV Energy reports 14,034 customers were without power as of around 9 p.m.

No word yet as to what caused the outages and when power will be restored.

Washoe County sues Postal Service over planned Reno to Sacramento move

Washoe County prosecutors have sued the United States Postal Service, asking a federal court to halt its plan to move key mail processing operations from Reno to Sacramento — cities divided by a snow closure-prone mountain pass — and accusing the agency of circumventing federal law.

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court of Nevada, the Washoe County’s District Attorney’s Office said that parts of the Postal Service’s 10-year plan to transform its operations — which includes the Reno to Sacramento move — violate federal law because the agency did not seek an advisory opinion from the Postal Regulatory Commission, which oversees the agency. Such opinions are required when a Postal Service proposal would “affect service on a nationwide or substantially nationwide basis.”

Prosecutors specifically argued that the Postal Service must receive an advisory opinion on the aspect of the 10-year plan that calls for nationwide changes to processing facilities — including those in Tallahassee and Portland — because it would “create a mail delay across the United States.” The lawsuit seeks to halt any further action until the agency seeks an advisory opinion from the commission.

The lawsuit, which Washoe County commissioners approved filing on Tuesday, is the latest effort by the chorus of state and federal politicians to delay or stop the move — including members of Nevada’s congressional delegation, the Washoe County Commission, secretary of state’s office and governor — over its potential effects on the region’s economy and mail ballots.

The Postal Regulatory Commission previously ruled that the agency did not need to seek an opinion on the entire 10-year plan, but may need approval before implementing specific parts. It also ordered the agency in April to show cause for why advisory opinions were not necessary for the processing facility changes. The Postal Service responded that such a step “significantly encroaches on the Postal Service’s discretion,” and added that it will seek an advisory opinion if it determines that one is necessary.

Under the agency’s plan for Northern Nevada, which was finalized last month despite bipartisan state-level opposition, all outgoing mail from Northern Nevada would first be processed in Sacramento before heading toward its destination, a change from current operations where such mail was processed in Reno. The Reno facility would be converted into a local processing center — a facility that prepares mail before it is placed on carrier routes.

A Postal Service spokesperson said on Wednesday that he could not comment on active litigation, but reiterated that incoming mail to Northern Nevada, including medications and checks, will continue to be processed and sorted by the Reno facility. The only changes will be for outgoing mail from the region, and the Postal Service determined that most outgoing mail at the Reno facility was destined for outside the region.

“The claims by some that this type of mail will be delayed are false,” the spokesperson said.

The lawsuit also argues the move on its own would necessitate an advisory opinion because it could have nationwide electoral implications. Mail ballots in Nevada must be received no later than four days after Election Day to be counted, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.

In the 2022 general election, more than 5,600 mail ballots in Washoe County arrived after Election Day, most of which were received the day after Election Day, according to data from the secretary of state’s office. In the U.S. Senate race, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) won by around 8,000 votes.

“(The plan) will include the power to impact the outcome of federal elections by failing to timely deliver mail that would otherwise be processed in Reno, Nevada and counted in an election,” the lawsuit said.

The Postal Service has maintained that the Reno to Sacramento move would not take effect until January, well after this year’s elections.

Prosecutors also appeared skeptical that the move would have no impact on mail delivery. The lawsuit said that the unpredictable winter weather on Interstate 80 and Donner Pass — the primary route between Reno and Sacramento — could jeopardize timely mail delivery.

“[T]he volatile road conditions of Donner Pass will create additional and substantial mail delays if and when Defendants implement their plan to move Reno’s mail processing to Sacramento,” the lawsuit said.

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo held a press conference on Tuesday to condemn the proposed move.

Carson High graduates 483, Pioneer Academy graduates 58 in Class of 2024 commencement ceremonies

Carson High School proudly celebrated the graduation of 483 seniors during the 2024 Commencement Ceremonies held Saturday, June 1, 2024. The event, which took place at the Carson High Football Field, was a momentous occasion for the students, their families and the entire Carson High community.

Morning events began in the big gym with graduates gathering for a class photo. The soon-to-be Senator Alumni then moved out to the warm, sunny football field where the atmosphere was filled with joy, pride and anticipation. Dressed in their blue and white gowns, the graduating seniors lead a procession around the track before settling into their seats.

The ceremony was filled with joy, reflection and anticipation for the bright futures that lay before each graduate. The event showcased the remarkable accomplishments and determination of the Class of 2024, honoring their hard work, resilience and dedication throughout their high school years.

The graduates were hailed and recognized by name on stage by school administrators, school board trustees and Superintendent Andrew Feuling. The highlight of the ceremony was the sea of decorated graduation caps ceremonially being tossed into the air.

Carson City's Catmandu introduces their Cat of the Week: Penelope

Meet Penelope, also known as Princess Penelope. This sweetie is very social and friendly. She is a beautiful short-haired Tabby hoping to find a home where she will be spoiled for the rest of her life. At 9 years young, this lovely girl has many good years of life ahead of her.

Let’s hear what Penelope has to say:
“I’m no longer a kitten, but neither am I an old cat. I’m in the prime of my life. I dream of finding the purrfect home where I can love my people and be loved in return.”

Penelope would prefer a quiet home where her people are often home to give her the attention she desires. She is very friendly with people and according to her former owners she does well with dogs and other cats. However, here at Catmandu she is not doing well with the other cats. She would do best being your one and only kitty.

Penelope was surrendered because her people travel extensively for work and were seldo home to give her the love and attention she wants and needs. Although she is relatively low-maintenance and not super-clingy or demanding, she does like being pet and sitting right beside you.

A very healthy cat, Penelope is spayed and up-to-date on her shots. Although she is only 9, we would consider placing her in the senior-to-senior foster program. This innovative foster program places senior cats with senior adults. Vet care is subsidized and the cat can return to Catmandu if anything happens to you.

Catmandu is a cage-free cat sanctuary and rescue that is celebrating a decade of lifesaving in 2024. Since March of 2014, more than 2700 cats have passed through our doors and into a better life. Many, many other cats and kittens have been helped over the years through our various programs and efforts.

Forest Service prepares for 2024 fire season, crews ramp up for busy season across Sierra

Fire crews and managers are already preparing for fire season. Despite two years of average to above-average precipitation, USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region Fire Director, Jaime Gamboa, knows just how quickly wildfire season can take off.

“We will not get complacent,” Gamboa said. “Our firefighting crews, equipment, and aircraft form one of the largest, most experienced wildland firefighting forces in the world. We’re ready to respond to whatever the season brings.” Gamboa also stressed the importance of being able to bring in other Federal crews from across the country. “With the Federal system we have, we can call resources from neighboring states and even farther away,” he said. “That means that when California is busy, we are able to not only sustain our staffing numbers, but also enhance them, all without depleting other state resources.”

Across the region’s national forests including the Lake Tahoe Basin, crews are completing fire trainings for new firefighters. Annual refreshers are underway for those in firefighting support. Readiness Reviews — or annual skills and fitness evaluations — are putting skills into action. Scenarios test everything from using hoses, pumps, and equipment, to treating and transporting injured firefighters. Strength and endurance are continually tested and refined as a critical part of the job.

For aircraft crews — like smokejumpers, helitack crews, rappelers and other aviation resources — mandatory job recertifications are starting. Throughout the long summer all these crews will continue to meet the required testing or mission every two weeks to stay current. National crews will be at the ready to support in-state crews for resources and relief.

Another rainy winter, with fewer than average viable prescribed burn windows, has pushed the prescribed fire season later into the year, and managers are working to ensure hazardous fuels are being treated while still remaining confident they can respond to wildfires.

This year, in his annual letter of intent to firefighters, USDA Forest Service Chief, Randy Moore, reaffirmed our continuing commitment to public and firefighter safety, while also stressing forward movement.

“I expect us to continue to use all available tools and technologies to ensure proactive prescribed fire planning and implementation, fire detection, risk assessments, fire response, and post-fire recovery. Every fire will receive a risk-informed response; we know the most effective strategies are collaboratively carried out at the local level… (to) help us make informed decisions that balance resource objectives with safety and community protection.”

Optum, a leading health solution and care delivery organization, brings its Mobile Medical Center known as "Medicine on the Move" to Carson City this Tuesday and Wednesday.

Optum members can schedule an Annual Wellness Visit at a Medicine on the Move Mobile Medical Center for a thorough, relaxed visit with a doctor. Discover Andean Music with Kantu Inka during a series of three weekly lessons at the Carson City Senior Center.

The Carson City Senior Center is hosting a 3-week series to learn to play the Zampoña (Peruvian Pan Pipes), starting Tuesday, June 25 at 2:30 to 4 pm.

Three weekly 90-minute lessons on Tuesdays regarding notes of the zampoña where you’ll learn to play songs with Kantu Inka. Pan pipes provided.

The event is free and will be in the Joshua Tree Room at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. RSVP’s for the event are required. Call the Senior Center to reserve a seat as space is limited or for more information (775) 883-0703.

Large fire reported near Speedway, 95A in Lyon County

UPDATE: The fire is controlled and extinguished, per WildCAD. No further extension to wildland, according to Eastern Sierra Fire & Ice, a fire and weather watch page.

A large fire has been reported and spotted on the wildland fire cameras in Lyon County as of Friday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m. the smoke plume was first reported near Speedway and 95A in Lyon County.

It is reportedly on or near a salvage yard.

First responders are on scene and multiple mutual aid resources have been called.
