The 29th annual Carson High Craft Fair is returning tonight, Friday Nov. 15 and continuing through tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 16 at Carson High School.

For nearly three decades crafters, makers and holiday enthusiasts have flocked to the capitol city high school to kick off their holiday shopping, and this year, attendees will find over 165 booths and 150 crafters.

In addition, you'll find food and snacks, can grab a picture with Santa, compete for raffle prizes, and so much more!

A portion of the proceeds support Carson High School student programing.

Admission tonight is $3, and tomorrow it is $2 without a canned food item or $1 with. K-12 students are free.

Carson High School is located at 1111 North Saliman Road.

Doors open tonight at 5 p.m. through 8:30 p.m., and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Carson City Rotarians Seeking a Family to Host Exchange Student from Japan

A Carson City family could have an opportunity to learn about a foreign culture without leaving home. The Rotary Club of Carson City is looking for a host family for the club’s current exchange student from Japan. A home is needed from December 1st to March 1st.

“Hosting an exchange student is a life enhancing experience for the entire family,” says club president Peter Fishburn, who has hosted a foreign exchange student. “The experience for the host family and the student is a win-win. The families feel like they’ve gained another son or daughter, feel good about being an ambassador for our country and state, and teach the student all of the great things about Carson City.”

The current student is attending high school and has her own spending for personal items. Her potential host family doesn’t need to be members of Rotary and is not required to have other children at home. Older couples and women who live alone can host as well.

Fishburn also notes the impact the experience has on the students. “The students are able to share their culture, their country’s way of life, the cuisine, and provide a personal perspective on their homeland. They also learn a new language, culture and become global citizens.” He adds that the experience often continues after the student returns home. “The families and students build a special friendship and connections that can last a lifetime.”

The Rotary Club is hoping a host family can be found so this student can experience the holidays in the United States and not have to return home early.

Carson City Holiday Tradition: Tiffani and Bailee's 12th Annual Sealed Toy Drive

Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with Stage Four Glioblastoma brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those who did not know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people.

She carried water and snacks in her car to give to the homeless and people less fortunate than her.

It came as no surprise to the people closest to her, when the social worker that was assigned to her case went to Tiffani's hospital room and asked if she needed anything.

Tiffani replied, "How can I help? What can I do for these children?" After much discussion, she found out that Lucile Packard Children's Hospital was in grave need of sealed toys for the children who have no immune system and must have brand new toys. They can't even leave their hospital room.

Tiffani was busy, she called her little sister Bailee, and asked her to put out donation boxes all over Carson City to collect toys, then Tiffani got busy spreading the word on social media from her hospital bed.

When we found out she wasn’t going to win this fight, Tiffani had one wish: it was, to please keep this Toy Drive going, after she passed.

Since Tiffani lost her battle in May of 2014, that's exactly what her sister Bailee and her family have done, they started with 3 or 4 locations and it has grown ever since. Our community is amazing and giving!

This year's toy drive began Nov. 1s, 2024 and comes to an end on Dec. 2nd, 2024. The toys will be delivered to LPCH by Dec. 14th, 2024. They will undergo a cleaning process, wrapped in holiday paper and delivered to the children on Christmas morning, because of all of you, the children will wake up to a basket of wrapped holiday gifts.

Friends of the Douglas County Library Autumn Book Sale

The Friends of the Douglas County Library will host a two-day used book sale, Friday and Saturday, November 15-16, at the Minden Library, 1625 Library Lane.

The sale will feature hardback and paperback fiction and nonfiction, vintage, teen, and children’s books, puzzles, and more.

A preview sale for members of Friends of the Library will be from noon to 3 pm on Friday, November 15. Non-members are welcome to join at the door. Members of the Friends receive a 10% discount on all purchases throughout the sale.

Beginning at 3 pm on Friday, November 15, the sale opens to the public and continues Saturday, November 16 from 10 am to 4 pm, with a ½ price sale from 3 to 4 pm.

Donations of 1 or 2 bags or small boxes of books are accepted at the library during regular hours. For larger donations, contact the library at 775-782-9841 or info@douglas.lib.nv.us.

Proceeds from the book sales are used by the Friends to support library programs and projects for infants, preschoolers, children, “tweens”, teens and adults. Greater Nevada Credit Union collects food and toys for the holiday season in Carson City

In recognition of the start of the holiday season, Greater Nevada Credit Union branch locations across northern Nevada are collecting donations for those in need on behalf of local nonprofits and the KTVN 2 News Nevada Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive.

GNCU asks northern Nevadans to contribute nonperishable foods, youth winter clothing items, unused hygiene products, and new children’s toys for this year’s Greater Giving Holiday Drive by donating at any participating GNCU branch locations by Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024.

Toys, hygiene products and youth winter clothing must be new, unopened and unwrapped to be accepted. Please check the expiration dates of food items before donating. The most requested food items for local pantries include, but are not limited to:

– Canned meals: stews, soups, spaghetti/ravioli (low-sodium preferred)
– Protein: peanut butter, tuna, salmon, chicken, dried or canned beans
– Grains: whole grain cereal, oatmeal, brown rice, whole grain pasta
– Fruits: canned (packed in 100% juice or light syrup), dried fruit, applesauce (no sugar added), 100% fruit juice boxes
– Vegetables: canned (no salt added and/or low-sodium preferred)
– Dairy: shelf-stable milk
– Kid-friendly snacks: granola bars, popcorn, animal crackers, graham crackers
– Baby products: formula, infant cereal, baby food

“The holiday season is a special time of year, and the Greater Nevada Credit Union team looks forward to supporting families and children in our community through the Greater Giving Holiday Drive," said Danny DeLaRosa, president and CEO of GNCU. “This is the fifth year of the campaign, and we are continually inspired by the generosity of our members, neighbors, employees and partners. The GNCU team will deliver all nonperishable food donations collected at their branches to 2 News Nevada’s Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive, which supports the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and other food pantries across northern Nevada. Monetary donations are also encouraged and can be made online to support the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Toys, hygiene products and youth winter clothing collected will benefit local nonprofits including Renown Children's Hospital, The Children’s Cabinet, Friends in Service Helping, Advocates to End Domestic Violence, David E. Norman Elementary School, Healthy Communities Coalition, Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe pantries in Fernley, Family Support Council and West Wendover Elementary School.

Carson City’s newest treat spot will be hosting a grand opening tomorrow, Friday Nov. 15 beginning at 10 a.m.

Festivities include a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., a guest appearance by the Cookie Monster, and even cookie eating contest!

A ribbon cutting will take place at 10 a.m., and free cookies will be given out to attendees until 2 p.m.

Dirty Dough is a national franchise known for their stuffed cookies, and Carson City’s location is owned by locals Rosy and Marlon Flores.

Dirty Dough is located at 2158 E. William St. next to Grocery Outlet.

Carson High Blue Thunder Marching Band Wins Sierra Band Crusade

The Carson High School Blue Thunder Marching Band won first place in the AA division with an overall score of more than 80 at the 44th Annual Sierra Band Crusade, northern Nevada’s Marching Band Championships, this past Saturday, Nov. 9, in Mackay Stadium at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The band has only ever won their division at Sierra Band Crusade a total of six times including 1982, 2003, 2005, 2021, 2022 and 2024. Additionally, this year's first place was with a score of 81.625, the highest score since 2005.

CHS Blue Thunder Marching Band also won all the caption awards in their division: Outstanding Music, Outstanding Visual and Outstanding Color Guard.

The band will extend the marching season and continue to showcase their talents before thousands of spectators and millions of television views at the historic Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade, the second-largest Thanksgiving parade in the country, Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary and a Chicago tradition since 1934, the parade attracts bands, floats, dance troupes and entertainers from across the country. This year, the parade will be aired live on Pluto TV, Paramount’s free streaming service, for families who wish to spectate from home.

NDOT announces lane closures for drainage improvements on U.S. 95A in Yerington

Lane closures and travel delays will begin Wednesday, Nov. 13 on U.S. 95 Alternate in Yerington as the Nevada Department of Transportation makes roadway drainage improvements.

Beginning Nov. 13 through early December, intermittent single lane and shoulder closures will be in place from 6 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays on U.S. 95A between Burch Drive and the State Route 339 intersection. Traffic flaggers will alternate directions of traffic through the work zone as roadway drainage pipe is installed, with moderate travel delays.

The road work schedule is subject to change without notice.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

A drainage drop inlet and new drainage pipe will be installed. The drainage improvements will help reduce roadway ponding during wet weather and preserve the roadway for the traveling public.
