We’re back, bigger and better than ever! Please welcome the second annual Mark Twain Days, May 10-12. For a listing of events take a gander at the website here.

You will find something of interest or my name’s not Mark Twain, or used to be anyways. And this year Virginia City is joining in on the fun along with Carson City. Wow!

The driving force behind last year’s Inaugural Mark Twain Days, my hero, Debra Soule, has handed the reins to Nevada Arts & Culture Program Manager, Eric Brooks, and the BAC’s Valerie Moore. You might want to pass along this year’s Mark Twain Days mementoes to your grandkids, as they will be worth their weight in gold come 2124.

Last year everybody sported a mustache, even the ladies. This photo above captured many of us in time.

When I returned home from last year’s extravaganza I slept face down in my white suit for 12 hours.

So what might Mark Twain have to say?

“At last we disembarked in the Silver-Land, Nevada. This was in August of 1861, and back then, Carson City was the most uninhabitable place on earth. Nothing grew there; even the birds when they flew over, carried their own provisions. But we climbed into the foothills and looked back on Carson City nestled in that flat sandy desert, and surrounded by such prodigious mountains that they seemed to expand your soul, until you felt yourself spreading into a colossus, and in that instant, you were seized with a burning desire to stretch forth your hand, put Carson in your pocket, and walk off with it.”

Somewhat retired now, I hope to visit as many events as possible to shake a few hands, slap a few backs, and thank everybody I can for honoring the Father of America’s Literature, who took his pen name right there in Carson City. That pen name would appear the next day in Virginia City’s Territorial Enterprise as the byline, Mark Twain.

“The publisher of the Enterprise, Joe Goodman told me when I hired on, ‘Sam you have but one responsibility here. Get your facts straight. Then you can distort them as much as you like.’ I learned in Virginia City, a good lie can travel twice around the globe before the truth gets its boots on. But our little 'quaints' were obvious sagebrush humor, and Nevada was built on tall tales. We had three kinds of stories back then, ‘Stretchers,’ that stretched the truth beyond the horizon of fact, ‘Lifters,’ that actually lifted the furniture, and ‘Powder Burners. Here lately I’ve stopped lying all together since the amateurs have taken over the field.”

So young and old, let us get out and celebrate the fact that America’s best loved author got his start in the Great State of Nevada. And should you see this old Codger wandering aimlessly around the grounds, do take a picture with him and pass it along to your grandkids. It might be worth an extra scoop of ice-cream come 2124.

Food Bank of Northern Nevada makes stops Wednesday at Carson City, Dayton senior centers

Food Bank of Northern Nevada made a stop to the Carson City Senior Center on Wednesday morning, with another stop at the Dayton Senior Center from 11 to noon.

The food bank will make stops May 13, in Yerington 9 to 10 a.m. and Silver Springs, 12 to 1 p.m. The mobile unit will return to Carson City on May 15 from 9 to 10 a.m. and Dayton Senior Center from 11 a.m. to noon.

Carson City 2024 Historic Resources Commission scavenger hunt begins today

In recognition of Historic Preservation and Archeological Awareness Month, the City’s Historic Resources Commission has organized the 2024 Scavenger Hunt.

This year’s hunt focuses on the early years of Carson City, beginning in the 1860s and continuing through 1900, and will ask participants to match the architectural term with the correct house.

A copy of the 2024 Scavenger Hunt can be obtained starting Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 108 East Proctor Street or at carson.org/scavengerhunt. The website link will be live online beginning Wednesday.

Completed answers are due by 3 p.m. May 31, 2024. Answers may be submitted in person at 108 East Proctor Street, online, or emailed to planning@carson.org. For the 6th year in a row, Jim Phalan of Fox Brewpub is donating a gift card to the person whose hunt is randomly drawn from correct entries.

Also, at the Board of Supervisor’s May 2 meeting, the 2024 Historic Preservation Award will be presented, recognizing Sarah Martin for her outstanding contributions to Carson City’s Historic Preservation, including the preservation of the Rinkel Mansion located at 102 N. Curry Street; and posthumously recognizing Stan Jones for his continuous support of the Historic District and the work of the Carson City Historic Resources Commission.

Nevada DMV launches new appointment system in offices statewide

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has announced the implementation of a new appointment system, WaitWell, in all metropolitan and rural offices throughout the state.

“We are thrilled to bring this new system to our offices,” said Director Tonya Laney. “We are solely focused on providing the best customer service possible and are already seeing great results with appointment availability going from several months out to just a few days.”

With this new system, customers can scan a QR code with their mobile device to check in for appointments without visiting the information counter.

Customers also no longer need to wait in an office to have their number called because they receive a text message when their appointment is getting close allowing them to run errands in the meantime.

As a reminder, customers must make an appointment during the week, excluding Wednesdays, at the DMV’s Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, and Carson City offices.

The DMV asks customers to complete your transactions online at dmv.nv.gov if possible. “Skip the line all together and choose online,” added Laney.

Longtime State Farm agent Marilyn Lewis retires, passes business to Lydia Romero and Nicole Williams

Marilyn "Mert" Paoli Lewis retired on April 30 after 42 years as a State Farm Agent. She started her career as a Scratch Agency in 1982, meaning she had no customers initially.

Over the years, she built an agency serving almost 4,000 households in the Carson City area and consistently ranked in the top 1 percent of State Farm Agents. Mert received multiple honors and awards, including Presidents Club, Chairmans Circle, Crystal Excellence, and Ambassador Club. She also achieved professional designations as a Financial Advisor and was recognized as "Best of Carson" for Financial Planning, Best Insurance Agent, and Best Customer Service.

Mert's book of business will be shared by two State Farm Agents, Lydia Romero and Nicole Williams.

Lydia Romero, who worked as Mert's Office Manager and right hand for a decade, will become a State Farm Agent starting May 1, 2024. Lydia is a 30-year resident of Carson City and has strong ties to the community. Her husband, Greg Lehman, is also a business owner in Carson City. The new office is located at 2085 E. William St #20, between Gold Dust West and Tractor Supply. Lydia is excited to continue Mert's commitment to excellence in a new environment.

Nicole Williams, a highly successful 12-year State Farm Agent in Reno, has opened her second location at 321 W. Winnie Ln. #106, which was Mert's former office location. Nicole, who was born and raised in Carson City, is honored and thrilled to be opening a location in her hometown. She has received numerous awards as a top agent within State Farm and is fully licensed in Insurance, Financial Services, and Securities.

Carson City All State Choral students recognized, sing with Emmy winner

Earlier this month, 11 students from Carson High School and six Carson Middle School and Eagle Valley Middle School students participated in the Annual American Choral Directors Association Nevada All State Choir event at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

High school students who participated included Chase Boholst, grade 10; Maximillian Bushey, grade 11; Cassidy Leatham, grade 11; Elizabeth Loos, grade 11; Max Powers, grade 10; Kaylee Redus, grade 12; Anna Roylance, grade 12; Leah Roylance, grade 12; Robert Sainz, grade 10; Parker Schmid, grade 12; and Eleanor Woodrum, grade 10. Middle school students included Josephine Cusack, grade 7 at CMS; Hailey Fife, grade 7 at CMS; Erick Loa, grade 8 at EVMS; Hannah Maddox, grade 7 at CMS; Savanna Pace, grade 7 at CMS; and Ellis Tuttle, grade 8 at CMS.

Of note, Anna Roylance and Parker Schmid were recognized for being in All State Choir for all four years of high school. Anna Roylance was also recognized for being the Alto 2 Section Leader, because she earned the highest score out all students who auditioned for the position.

The high school students were able to work under the direction of Jake Runestad, Emmy winning and Grammy nominated composer and conductor. Dubbed as a “choral rock star” by American Public Media, Runestad is one of the most frequently performed composers of concert music and can be heard across the globe.

The middle school singers participated with more than 200 middle school students from Nevada under the direction of Dr. Rollo Dilworth. Dr. Dilworth is currently Vice Dean and Professor of Choral Music Education in the Department of Music Education and Therapy at Temple University's Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. Dilworth has more than 200 choral compositions and arrangements that have been published and performed throughout the world.

"This two-day event is a great opportunity for these choral students to see and participate in the next level of choral singing,” said Briana Valley, music teacher at Carson Middle School. “The growth they show in their musical abilities from Thursday morning's first rehearsal to the performance Friday night is amazing to witness. They spend two full days of singing and rehearsing with composers and the end performance is pure perfection in showing the hard work they put in."

Carson City Farmers Market returns June 8 with even more vendors at Mills Park

The Carson City Farmers Market returns to the capital city Saturday, June 8 at its new home in Mills Park. Each year, the market continues to grow, and this year is no exception with 11 new vendors added to the roster.

“As we gear up for this year’s market season, we’re thrilled to showcase an impressive roster of 67 vendors each week, blending returning favorites with fresh faces,” said Market Manager Breana Coons. Among our cherished regulars, we are excited to welcome 11 new vendors, each bringing something unique to our community.”

These include Happy Mushrooms, Isla Kusina, No City Coffee, Park Ranch meats, La Tapatia Ice Cream, Nevada Custom Engraving, the Wayfarer specialty cheeses, Three Horse Flower Farm, Sugar Pie, and more.

“We are also introducing several new local musicians who bring a vibrant layer of entertainment to the market atmosphere,” Coons said.

This will be the second year that the market will be in Mills Park, and Coons said community feedback from the move has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“Visitors appreciated the spacious pavilion, which provided a refreshing retreat from the sun under its ample shade. Additionally, the scenic walks through the park added a unique charm to their market experience, setting it apart from any other venue in the area," she said.

Parking remains a logistical challenge due to the high turnout, Coons said, but luckily the park offers 250 spots throughout.

“Although this means some visitors might face a brief walk, it's a small concession for the pleasure of spending a day at such a scenic and lively market," she said.

The market returns from June 8 to September 28 between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California and Northern Nevada have two in-person support groups that provide a place where you can learn, share, and be with others who understand and appreciate your caregiving journey. This group aims to help with providing information, providing hope for living a value centered life, and supporting you as a caregiver.

Lions Club hosts Carson City Kids’ Fishing Day this Saturday at Baily Pond

Carson City Host Lions Club

Carson City Host Lions Club 2024 Kids Fishing Day is a community event held at Baily Pond in Fuji Park. Kids’ Fishing Day will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This fun event is designed to introduce kids to fishing and conservation. All kids under 12, and their families or adult guardians, are invited to attend for free! Volunteers will be available to answer questions and to help kids in need of assistance with fishing.

We encourage participants to bring their own rod and reel. A limited amount of rods and reels will be available for use by kids under 12 who don't have their own. Rods, reels, bait and tackle will be provided, until supplies run out.
Participants who are 12 and older will need a valid Nevada fishing license. There is a two fish limit per person.

Prizes and concessions will also be available. Come join the Lions for a great day of fishing!
