100 citizen scientist volunteers gather Tahoe water quality data for 24th Snapshot Day

On a sunny Saturday morning, 100 volunteer participants fanned out across Lake Tahoe’s South Shore to take water quality samples from 34 streams, creeks, ponds, and lakes to monitor the health of the Truckee River watershed and Lake Tahoe as part of the 24th annual Snapshot Day. They were joined by teams doing the same tests simultaneously in other regions of the watershed.

Since 2001, Snapshot Day partners have sampled sites from Meyers to Tahoe’s North Shore, on to Truckee and through Reno, terminating at Pyramid Lake. By collecting water quality data from the same sites each year, the League to Save Lake Tahoe and event partners can track changes in the health of Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River watershed. For the past eight years, the League has focused on the upper watershed, which includes the headwaters of the Upper Truckee River and dozens of water bodies across the South Shore.

“What was surprising is just how much goes into monitoring all the different tributaries that go into Lake Tahoe,” commented Ian Walter, a first-time participant in Snapshot Day.

As volunteers waded into marshes and streams to take measurements of characteristics like pH, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity, they became “citizen scientists” for the day, contributing important environmental data. They also gained a deeper understanding and connection to the watershed where they play, visit, live, and work.

“I think it’s important for us to do our part. Especially if we love a place, it’s up to us to protect it,” said Aislinn Kari, another first-time Snapshot Day volunteer who made the journey from Reno to join in. “Being a part of this and feeling as if I contributed something, it just feels good.”

With the addition of this year’s sampling, there is a robust water quality dataset stretching back nearly a quarter century. It allows researchers, scientists, and organizations like the League to track changes in important water quality parameters, as well as gain a better understanding of how the Tahoe ecosystem responds to environmental shocks like droughts and wildfires. The data analysis can also guide planning for ecosystem restoration projects and other efforts that make the Tahoe environment more resilient in the face of climate change.

“Since 2001, the water quality data collection and field assessments for Snapshot Day have played an integral part in telling the story of Lake Tahoe's health,” said Deirdre Francks, Science and Data Coordinator from the League to Save Lake Tahoe. “Next year, for the 25th year of the event, we are going to compile a larger report highlighting the story of Lake Tahoe, its clarity, and the volunteers that ensure it remains healthy for future generations."

In addition to water quality tests conducted by citizen scientists in the field, samples are also taken to a lab to be analyzed for bacteria, total dissolved solids, and turbidity by generous event partners from the South Tahoe Public Utility District and Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Crash with injuries reported on I-580 entrance from North Carson

Just before noon on Tuesday a crash with injuries was reported on the I-580 on ramp from N. Carson Street.

According to dispatch there are two vehicles involved, one of which was towing a trailer.

Injuries have been reported and the number two lane is blocked.

Traffic cameras show vehicles are moving slowly but are able to get through to Washoe Valley.

Motorists must use caution in the area.

CHS Wrestling Hosts Annual Golf Tourney at Silver Oak June 15

Carson High School Wrestling invites you to our annual Golf Tournament on June 15th, 2024, at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. This event is crucial for our program's success as it serves as our main fundraiser.

Last year, our wrestling team achieved remarkable victories, winning 19 duals and triumphing over Douglas High in an exciting showdown. However, due to the financial strains caused by increased tournament entry fees and the rising cost of travel since COVID-19, fundraising is more vital than ever to sustain our success.

The tournament promises a day of friendly competition and community spirit, with prizes donated by our partners, including a pistol and a shotgun up for auction. Along with that we will be doing a $10,000 Hole in One contest, a best dressed award, and First and Last Place team prizes. We need your support to make this event a success.

Summer Sports Camp is a full-day opportunity hosted in partnership with Skiing is Believing. Every day of every week, staff will help provide a variety of sports for kids to develop their physical skills and promote emotional development through exercise and community service.

Each week will include a combination of mountain biking, hiking, martial arts, community services and education, softball/baseball, archery, general fitness, flag football, inline skating and more. All sports are taught by sport-specific staff and coaches. Kids in camp will go home tired after full days of truly enriching physical activity and social emotional learning.

It's designed for children ages 8-14, and parents should plan to pack a lunch, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and snacks for their children. Specific daily what-to-bring lists will be provided via email prior to the start of camp.

Throughout Northern Nevada, seniors are finding fulfillment and purpose through giving back to their communities. Volunteerism among seniors in Northern Nevada isn't just an act of kindness; it's a pathway to enhanced well-being, social connection, and a legacy of service.

The Silver Lining of Aging: Volunteerism
As individuals transition into their senior years, they often encounter shifts in lifestyle and priorities. Retirement brings newfound freedom, but it can also lead to a sense of purposelessness for some. However, volunteerism emerges as a silver lining, offering a plethora of benefits that extend far beyond the act of giving.

1. Enhanced Mental and Emotional Well-being
The sense of purpose derived from contributing to a cause larger than oneself can combat feelings of isolation and depression. Carson High NJROTC Announces Cadet of the Year, Change of Command, Achievements, and the Retirement of Lt. Cmdr. Meyer

The Carson High School (CHS) Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) recognized Cadet Chief Petty Officer Vivi Mellow as its “Cadet of the Year” during its annual awards ceremony last Thursday in the Morse Burley Gymnasium at Carson High.

The event also hosted a “Change of Command” ceremony, marking a significant transition in leadership. Outgoing Battalion Commander Cadet Commander Noah Bean handed over the reins to incoming Battalion Commander Cadet Commander Neva Mellow.

“The prestigious ‘Cadet of the Year’ award recognizes an individual who has consistently exemplified the core values of the NJROTC program: honor, courage and commitment,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Jerry Skirvin. “Cadet Mellow's dedication to her unit, her academic achievements and her leadership skills set her apart as a deserving recipient of this honor.”

Additionally, the unit had reason to celebrate as it recently placed third out of 30 units in Area 22, a testament to their hard work and dedication. As a result of being number three, the unit earned the Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors award. The unit has earned this award for the last seven years running. This achievement underscores the unit's commitment to excellence in all aspects of their training and activities.

Thursday’s ceremony also saw cadets being recognized for various achievements, including academic excellence, physical fitness and community service. Each award served as a testament to the diverse talents and strengths of the cadets within the Carson High School NJROTC program.

What made this year's ceremony particularly special was the involvement of 15 organizations from the local community. These organizations, ranging from veterans' associations to civic groups and businesses, generously sponsored awards and scholarships for the cadets. Their support not only added to the significance of the event but also demonstrated the strong bond between the NJROTC program and the community it serves.

Among the awards presented were those for leadership, outstanding performance in drill competitions and excellence in naval science studies. Each award served as a reminder of the values instilled by the NJROTC program: discipline, teamwork, and a commitment to service.

As the evening drew to a close, the sense of pride and accomplishment was palpable. Cadets, adorned with their awards and badges, stood tall as they were applauded for their hard work and dedication. The ceremony was not just a celebration of individual achievements but also a reaffirmation of the values and principles that the NJROTC program stands for.

Looking ahead, the cadets of Carson High School's NJROTC program are poised to continue making a positive impact, both within their school community and beyond. As they carry forward the lessons learned and the values instilled during their time in the program, they will undoubtedly excel as future leaders and responsible citizens.

Additionally, after a decade of dedicated service, Carson High's NJROTC program bids farewell to their esteemed Senior Naval Science Instructor, Lieutenant Commander Dan Meyer, as he retires from his role with the unit.

“Throughout his leadership, Commander Meyer has left an indelible mark on the NJROTC program, guiding countless cadets towards excellence and instilling in them the values of honor, courage and commitment,” Sr. Chief Skirvin said. “His passion for mentoring youth and his unwavering commitment to the development of future leaders have earned him the respect and admiration of both cadets and colleagues alike.”

Under his guidance, the NJROTC unit at Carson High School has flourished, achieving numerous accolades and milestones, Skirvin continued. Lt. Cmdr. Meyer's dedication to the program has not only enriched the lives of the cadets but has also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and pride within the unit.

As Lt. Cmdr. Meyer transitions into retirement, the unit welcomes Sr. Chief Petty Officer Jerry Skirvin, who will step into the role left by Lt. Cmdr. Meyer. Sr. Chief has been an integral part of the NJROTC unit for the last 5 years, benefitting from Lt. Cmdr. Meyer's mentorship and guidance during his tenure. With his wealth of experience and dedication to the program's success, Sr. Chief is poised to continue the legacy of excellence established by his mentor, ensuring the continued growth and success of Carson High School's NJROTC program.

The NJROTC program aims to teach high school students the values of citizenship, leadership, character and community service, while also providing a foundation for future careers in the military or other fields. The program is offered in more than 600 high schools across the United States, and the NJROTC Area Managers visit each unit once a year to conduct inspections.

Finally, CHS NJROTC has an opening for an instructor. The school is looking for individuals who have served in either the U.S. Marine Corps or the U.S. Navy to join this high-achieving team. NJROTC instructors work with CHS students in a respectful and rewarding environment passing on knowledge and experiences to develop effective leaders.
