Winds will shift to the northwest this evening and be slow to diminish overnight. Meanwhile, humidity will be low, 8 to 15 percent by afternoon and early evening.

The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

The weather service advises people to follow local fire restriction and avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.

Gusty winds will persist for areas south of US-50 Monday, as well as much cooler conditions, with Tuesday morning lows possibly dipping below freezing in Sierra valleys and near freezing for colder western Nevada valleys, forecasters said.

There will be a warming trend for the second half of the week. Daytime highs for lower elevations will return to the 90s to around 100 by next weekend.
News Sun, 16 Jun 2024 16:50:06 +0000 Jeff Munson 131169 at https://carsonnow.org 2024 Carson High Safe Grad thanks sponsors and volunteers https://carsonnow.org/reader-content/06/16/2024/2024-carson-high-safe-grad-thanks-sponsors-and-volunteers
<fb:like href="https://carsonnow.org/reader-content/06/16/2024/2024-carson-high-safe-grad-thanks-sponsors-and-volunteers" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Carson High Safe Grad Boosters

The Class of 2024 was celebrated two weeks ago with a free all-night party hosted by Carson High Safe Grad. The majority of lane closures were short in length, with moderate travel delays.

Now underway, more extensive lane reductions will take place as crews launch major highway reconstruction. Just under two miles of U.S. 395 between Waterloo Lane and First Street in Gardnerville will be completely reconstructed and repaved.

Drivers should anticipate the following construction on sections of U.S. 395 between Waterloo Lane and First Street spring through September 2024.

Sections of U.S. 395 between Waterloo Lane and First Street in Gardnerville will be reduced to one lane in each direction during major construction.

Drivers should anticipate shifting traffic control and 24/7 travel delays through the work zone as semi-permanent barriers are placed in work areas for driver and worker safety.

At least one lane in each direction and one access to each business will remain available during construction.

Access will be maintained, but may include metal plates over driveways. NDOT encourages the community to support local businesses during construction. Alternate routes are advised for those traveling through without a planned destination in the work zone.

Left-hand turns and travel across intersections will periodically be prohibited as intersections are reconstructed and new road surface placed.

Expect reduced speeds through the work zone and provide extra time to reach destinations.
News Sun, 16 Jun 2024 14:05:05 +0000 Jeff Munson 131167 at https://carsonnow.org Muscle Powered hosts Wednesday hike along Kings Canyon Waterfall Trail https://carsonnow.org/reader-content/06/15/2024/hike-kings-canyon-waterfall-trail
<fb:like href="https://carsonnow.org/reader-content/06/15/2024/hike-kings-canyon-waterfall-trail" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

By Janet McDonnell

Join Muscle Powered for an evening hike of Kings Canyon Waterfall Trail in Carson City at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 19.

Wear your comfortable clothes and shoes, bring water and a hat to enjoy an outing to end your day! In a release provided by the FBI, 201 law enforcement officers graduated from the FBI National Academy.

The 290th session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 46 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 24 countries, five military organizations, and six federal civilian organizations.

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communications, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these offices have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. FBI Director Christopher Wray delivered remarks at the ceremony and Class spokesperson Thomas Sloan, from Round Rock Police Department, Round Rock, Texas represented the graduating officers.

FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training; many instructors are recognized internationally in their fields. Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits all the National Academy courses offered. A total 55,186 graduates have completed the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts.

Sheriff Furlong congratulated Assistant Sheriff Gonzales for his completion of the highly demanding curriculum. In keeping with the departments vision, mission, values, and goals, the Sheriff prides the organization for making training a priority. Ensuring that our law enforcement leadership in Carson City receives the highest levels of training available is a critical feature of our philosophy for engaging with the community and delivering professional services. He likes people and once comfortable with you, he will purr with delight while you pet him.

Lenny’s early years have been rather sad. Scared and sick, he was left in the night drop-box at a high kill shelter in northern California. He was rescued and came to Catmandu in October 2023. Thanks to Dr. Sean at All Creatures Mobile Veterinary Hospital, Lenny got healthy, was neutered and received all his shots. The tender loving care from Catmandu staff and volunteers helped Lenny regain some confidence and start to trust people again.

He was adopted in November 2023, unfortunately, not for long. Lenny was returned to Catmandu following conflict with another cat in the home. He is very sad about the situation. Now 4 years old, he hopes a loving family will provide him a forever home where he can begin a new and happy chapter of his life.

After all he's been through, Lenny takes a little bit of time to warm up. He is looking for a family with understanding and patience, and would do best in a home with no other animals and no young children. In the right home and enough time, this sweet kitty will make a loving companion.

If you have room in your heart and your home for a nice kitty that hasn’t had much happiness in his life, please complete a pre-adoption application on our website at CatmanduCC.org/adoptions and plan to visit him soon. We are open Friday – Sunday from 11am to 5 pm, at 1829 Brown Street and by appointment.

Catmandu is a cage-free cat sanctuary and rescue that is celebrating a decade of lifesaving in 2024. Bonanza: A Tale of Merging Histories, published by Rowman & Littlefield. Written by Monette Bebow-Reinhard, the discussion takes place Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Carson City Library, located at 900 N. Roop St., Carson City.

Bebow-Reinhard’s compelling work dives into the rich history of the area, starting with pre-contact times and covering the dynamic discovery of the Comstock Lode and its far-reaching effects. The author takes an intriguing twist by exploring how the history of Virginia City inspired the beloved TV series Bonanza and how the series utilized this history and helped sustain the legacy of what was once the richest city in the world, transforming it into an international destination.

During the presentation, Bebow-Reinhard will focus on lesser-known aspects of Mark Twain and Carson City's history. In addition to discussing her book, Bebow-Reinhard will share her journey of becoming the authorized Bonanza novelist, a role she has embraced since 1993, and how this latest project came to fruition in 2020.

This event is a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts, fans of Bonanza, and anyone interested in local lore to engage with the author and learn more about the fascinating intersections of history and popular culture.
