Carson City's Mile High Jazz Band presents 'Taking Chances' big band jazz and poetry Tuesday

The Mile High Jazz Band, singer Jakki Ford, and seven award-winning poets and readers present "Taking Chances,” an evening of big-band jazz and poetry, on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Gina's Good Life Music & Lounge, 507 N. Carson Street, inside the Carson Nugget.

The music is free, donations are welcome. Gina's is a smoke-free, climate-controlled venue, and has a well-stocked bar.

"Taking Chances” features the 17-member band playing swinging songs on the theme of the evening. Poets and readers are Rita Geil, Terri Breeden, Wayne Carlson, Krista Lukas, Melanie Perish, Timothy Rhodes, and the Reno Poet Laureate, Jesse James Ziegler.. Each poem expresses an aspect of the theme and is followed by a tune that relates to the poem. Several tunes feature Jakki Ford.

Pianist and bandleader David Bugli said, "We'd like to tell you the tunes we will be playing, but that would spoil the fun for the audience to make connections between the poems and the tunes that follow them. You need to be there to experience it."

Mile High Jazz Band performances and educational activities are supported in part by private donations and memberships, and by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts. For information about the band and its activities, see milehighjazz.com.

Regional Transportation Commissioners to discuss the construction of a new multi-use path, JAC purchases, and more

The next meeting of the Regional Transportation Commission will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9 following the 4:30 p.m. CAMPO meeting and will take place in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Items on the agenda include a new multi-use path construction, JAC purchases, trail grants and more.

An amendment to the cooperative agreement between the RTC and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) for the Carson City DMV Multi-Use Path Project, which will revise the scope and name of the project update references to environmental regulations, update contact information, among other things.

The update will also remove $310,000 in carbon reduction plan funding, as well as $16,327 in local match, for a new total of $1.55 million in federal funding and $81,500 in local match.

The project includes the construction of a new multi-use path, extending from the existing Linear Ditch multi-use path along Roop Street to the entrance of Governor’s Field. The project will also rehabilitate up to seven miles of Carson City’s existing multi-use path network.

According to the agenda, staff were not able to secure an easement with the State of Nevada for the planned construction of a new multi-use path south of the DMV facility. Because of this, a portion of the work has been removed.

The project’s design is complete, and NDOT has approved it for construction, which is anticipated to begin in the Spring.

— Commissioners will discuss the ratification of a 2024 Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) grant application for $7.36 million that, if approved, will be used to compete the Ash Canyon Road and Trailhead Project, including a $410,00 in local match.

— The purchase of two transit vehicles from Model 1 Commercial Vehicles, Inc. will be discussed in the amount of $208,820 for each vehicle for a total not to exceed $417,640. These vehicles will be ADA-compliant, mid-size, low floor transit vehicles for the JAC transit system.

CAMPO Commissioners to discuss pavement assessments and JAC funding

The next Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) meeting will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room at the Carson City Community Center.

On the agenda topics include pavement assessments and JAC funding.

— Carson City will join forces with Douglas County if an interlocal agreement is approved for the data collection, analysis and reporting of a pavement condition survey to include portions of Douglas outside the CAMPO boundary. Douglas will be responsible for reimbursing CAMPO for an amount not to exceed $37,600 for their portion of the survey.

To perform the Pavement Management Survey the cost will be just over $150,000 and will include a physical survey and conditional assessment of roadway pavement along approximately 276 roadway miles in Carson City and approximately 176 roadway miles in Douglas County.

— Commissioners will discuss proposed performance targets for 2025 for capital assets funded by CAMPO such as Jump Around Carson (JAC) and other transit facilities.

Nominations Open for Carson Water Subconservancy District 2025 Andy Aldax Award

Carson City, NV – The Carson Water Subconservancy District is now taking nominations for candidates to receive the 2025 Andy Aldax Award as described below:

Award Purpose and Scope

The CWSD Andy Aldax Award for Exemplary Service in Conservation and Protection of the Carson River Watershed was initiated in 2007 to honor Andy Aldax, a Carson Water Subconservancy District (CWSD) Board member since its inception in 1959 - 2013. Andy was a life-long resident, farmer, and dairyman in the Carson Valley of northern Nevada and demonstrated an ongoing dedication to improving his community, as well as the Carson River Watershed. Andy died in February of 2020.

The Carson River runs approximately 184 miles beginning in Alpine County, California, and continuing through Douglas County, Carson City, Lyon County, and Churchill County, Nevada. Its watershed encompasses approximately 3,966 square miles.

The Carson River Watershed Vision is to achieve healthy sustainable watersheds within the entire Carson River Basin; to achieve improved watershed conditions, so all lands and waterways (surface and underground) safely receive, store, and release clean water for the good of all peoples, environments, and natural resources of the Carson River Basin; to achieve this vision through community-led and private/public partnerships for the implementation of local and basin-wide plans and projects.

This award recognizes individuals and/or organizations for significant contributions in promoting and achieving the Carson River Watershed Vision.

Please submit a 1-page narrative outlining how the nominee meets the award criteria outlined below to Catrina Schambra at catrina@cwsd.org by Monday, October 28, 2024.

Award Criteria

To be considered for this award, nominees must:

1. Have demonstrated a commitment to Carson River Watershed conservation activities for 10 years or more; and,
2. Have produced accomplishments toward the goals outlined in the Carson River Watershed Vision Statement; and,
3. Be an organization, landowner, community member, or employee of a federal, state, or local entity living or working in the Carson River Watershed.

CWSD will review the list of nominees and present the award at the January 15, 2025, Board of Directors Meeting.

Tee Jay's Corner Cafe will once again host "Chowder for Charity" on behalf of F.I.S.H. Friday October 4, 10am-8pm. Tee Jay's Corner Cafe is located inside Cactus Jack's Casino at 420 North Carson Street, Carson City, NV.

Tee Jay's Corner Cafe provides all the homemade traditional New England Clam Chowder for the event with 100% of donations going to F.I.S.H. as this local charity and social support organization prepares for the coming winter to help those in need. This is the 4th year Tee Jay's has hosted the event. The Chowder is free as a thank you gift for a hearty donation to F.I.S.H. It is the kick-off event for chowder season at the cafe.

The Clam Chowder is from a traditional recipe found in the "Chowder" chapter found in the novel Moby Dick and as sales would indicate, quite popular with Carson City residents. Tee Jay's Corner Cafe asks that participants "give till it hurts, then soothe the pain with a fabulous bowl of Clam Chowder."

C5 Classic Cinema presents Universal Monsters Film Weekend Oct. 11 - 12

Classic Universal Monsters will be on the loose once again in C5 Classic Cinema's weekend film binge, just in time for Halloween!

The 2-day event comes alive Friday with 1931's Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff, followed by Lon Chaney, Jr., as The Wolf Man (1941). Saturday, the series continues with Dracula (1931), The Mummy (1932), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and closes with 1922s silent film, Nosferatu, which will be accompanied with live original music score by Brandon Dodge and Aren Long.

The fright festival will happen at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall
(511 W. King Street) and tickets are available at the door. A weekend pass ($20) includes admission to all films + bottomless popcorn bucket. Friday-only passes are $10 and Saturday-only passes are $15. Single film admission is $5. Costumes are encouraged.

Carson City Rotary Senior Spotlight: Ethan Hendee balances academics, athletics and community service

Carson High School senior Ethan Hendee exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated student-athlete. Balancing his academics, athletics and community service with remarkable fortitude.

Ethan’s commitment to his studies is evident in his stellar academic performance. As a senior, he maintains a GPA that surpasses the 4.0 mark, demonstrating his dedication to learning and his drive to excel. He understands the importance of an education, knowing that his achievements in the classroom will open doors for his future.

Looking ahead, Ethan aims to play college football while pursuing a degree in physical therapy, with a focus on Sports Medicine. His experiences as an athlete have shaped his desire to help others recover from injuries and improve their performance. Ethan’s goal is to combine his love for sports with his academic interests, making a difference in the lives of athletes at all levels.

In addition to his academic success, Ethan is making significant contributions on the football field. This year marks his fourth season playing for the Carson football team, as one of the captains. As a starting receiver, he is on his way to earn his third varsity letter this season and is currently ranked 4th in Carson High school’s division with 11 catches totaling 169 yards. He is looking to improve on his total yardage from last year.

One of Ethan’s proudest moments came during his sophomore year when he was elevated to a starting receiver, this milestone has fueled his passion and commitment for the game and to his team.

Ethan’s leadership is not just limited to his role as a Captain, he also volunteers his time coaching Pop Warner youth football, where he inspires younger athletes to develop their skills and love for the sport. His involvement in the community showcases his desire to give back and make a positive impact on the lives of young athletes.

Ethan Hendee is a shining example of what it means to be a student-athlete. With his exceptional academic record, leadership on the football team and his commitment to our community, he is not only preparing for a successful college career but also setting a standard for his peers. As he enters his senior year, there is no doubt that Ethan will continue to excel, both in the classroom and on the field, inspiring those around him to reach their full potential.

— All students named as a weekly Senior Spotlight are featured at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Carson City. The Rotary Club of Carson City is a vibrant and dedicated group of professionals and community leaders committed to making a positive impact. Meet Einstein: Cat of the Week at Carson City's Catmandu

We suspect Einstein, our cat of the week, is at least part Maine Coon. He is a big, beautiful, long-haired tabby with a sweet personality. He grew up with a dominant female cat that bullied him, leaving him a bit shy and introverted, and uncertain with new situations and people.

He will likely hide at first, but with a little patience and lots of love you will find he actually enjoys pets and attention. He will happily carry on a conversation with you. In his deep, raspy voice, he will tell you his innermost thoughts. Einstein is fine with being picked up and held.

He loves to hang out in boxes and likes to play. Though it might take him a little longer than most cats to adjust to a new home and family, he is well worth the extra time.

Einstein is a healthy neutered 5-year-old fellow who is current on his shots and ready for his new home. He is an indoor cat who has lived with other cats his whole life and would likely do well with a mellow friendly cat or a smaller, cat-friendly dog. Big dogs scare him, as do loud noises and small children. He would be a great addition to a quiet tranquil home. Einstein is due to be groomed which will be provided at Catmandu by Dr. Sean.

Potential adopters are welcome Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4 pm. Please plan to arrive no later than 3 pm so you have plenty of time to spend with the cats before adoptions close.

Catmandu is a cage-free cat sanctuary and rescue that is celebrating a decade of lifesaving in 2024. Since March of 2014, more than 2700 cats have passed through our doors and into a better life. Many, many other cats and kittens have been helped over the years through our various programs and efforts.
