They are just feet away from iconic Emerald Bay, beautiful beaches and tall trees, and underneath the turquoise blue water Lake Tahoe is known for.

Twelve years ago divers from another project discovered the copper cables and found they'd been placed on the sandy bottom of the lake by the Pacific Bell Telephone Company a century ago. After several mergers, AT&T of California acquired Pacific Bell. Three years ago, the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA), a nonprofit advocacy group based in Groveland, Calif., sued AT&T to have them removed after their discovery.

This week, CSPA announced AT&T of California, has agreed to remove its abandoned telecommunications cables that have been leaching toxic lead into the waters of Lake Tahoe for decades.

“This is a monumental win for the environment, the communities who drink Lake Tahoe water, the people with lake-dependent livelihoods, and the millions of annual visitors,” said Chris Shutes, Executive Director for CSPA.

Shutes said AT&T will be responsible for removing the cables, and the process could start as soon as this Fall. The court is required to wait 45 days before giving final approval for the removal to begin, so things, including weather, could get in the way of completion in 2024.

"Their commitment is to try to have the cables out by November 30, 2024, and no later than May 26, 2025 (Memorial Day next year)," said Shutes.

CSPA’s advocacy and litigation efforts weren't alone in their desire to get the lead out. Also working on the lead cable removal was a grassroots effort by the Tahoe Lead Removal Project. This group was holding public outreach events to obtain the required permits from seven separate entities overseeing the area and finance an extraction that was estimated to cost upwards of $2 million. AT&T will now cover that expense. The League to Save Lake Tahoe said the work will be done by licensed professional operators based on qualifications and availability.

"This action directly aligns with our mission to get the lead out, and we are thrilled that AT&T is making this commitment once more," said Evan Dreyer, founder of the Tahoe Lead Removal Project. "Based on the quotes in the various news articles, it's apparent that their senior leadership is engaged and focused on achieving this outcome by November."

"Our work will only end once the cables are physically removed from Lake Tahoe," added Dreyer. "We will remain engaged and supportive of efforts to achieve this outcome. AT&T has our support and gratitude, especially given the proposed timing this November or Spring 2025 at the latest.

After conditionally settling in 2022, AT&T reinitiated litigation to determine the merits of CSPA’s claims. The lawsuit alleges AT&T’s cables discharged lead violating California’s voter-approved Proposition 65, (The Safe Drinking Water and Toxics Enforcement Act of 1986), and those discharges presented an imminent and substantial endangerment to human health and the environment, in violation of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The cables are comprised of paper-wrapped copper wires, inside a thick lead conduit, wrapped in spiral-wound steel rods and covered with a bitumen/tar-impregnated fiber coating.

Each foot of the lead-clad cables contains approximately 3.39 pounds of lead. There are approximately 6 miles of submerged cables. As a result of this settlement, AT&T will remove about 107,000 pounds of lead from Lake Tahoe.

CSPA’s investigation revealed the abandoned cables were discharging lead. Due to wind-caused currents, anchor strikes, and deterioration over time, the cables have become damaged and degraded, exposing the lead conduit in numerous locations.

CSPA-supported scientific investigations confirmed elevated levels of lead in water and sediment adjacent to the cables. The investigations found lead in algae, which forms the base of the food web for the fisheries at Lake Tahoe. CSPA also found lead in clams and crawdads collected at the cables.

“Designated as an Outstanding National Resource Water, Lake Tahoe has no major pollution sources of lead or other metals entering the lake. So, our expectations were to see minimal to low concentrations of lead in this exceptionally clean and clear lake. The team conducted a structured scientific collection and laboratory analyses of water, sediment and microscopic plants and bacteria called biofilms (a.k.a. algae). One sample of biofilm on the cables showed lead at 67,000 times more concentrated than a reference biofilm sample taken from a rock. These biofilms are a food source for fish, and the lead can be biomagnified as it travels up the food chain,” said Sudeep Chandra, PhD, Professor of Limnology, Director of Global Water Center, University of Nevada, Reno.

Lake Tahoe, known for its breathtaking beauty, clear waters, and ecological significance, has been burdened by these lead-leaching cables. “CSPA remains dedicated to Lake Tahoe as one of nation’s most iconic waterbodies. We are proud to have fought for the removal of this toxic waste from Lake Tahoe, and we are happy that AT&T decided to finally step up,” stated Shutes.

CSPA was represented by the Aqua Terra Aeris Law Group (through Matthew C. Maclear and Erica A. Maharg), Klamath Environmental Law Center (through William “Bill” Verick), Law Offices of Andrew L. Packard, Law Office of Dr. John Kirk Boyd, Law Office of Brian Acree and the Law Office of William Carlon.

CSPA’s investigation resulted, in part, from the generous funding of therootcauseproject.org, spearheaded by Founder, Roland Peralta. Local divers, Kris Kierce and Scott Fontecchio from Lake Tahoe Diving & Environmental, performed the sampling.
News Sun, 22 Sep 2024 00:09:30 +0000 Jeff Munson 132526 at https://www.carsonnow.org Carson City Sheriff’s Office to host 3rd annual K9 Unit Challenge https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/21/2024/carson-city-sheriff-s-office-host-3rd-annual-k9-unit-challenge
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/story/09/21/2024/carson-city-sheriff-s-office-host-3rd-annual-k9-unit-challenge" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

Event Date:

October 19, 2024 - 9:00am

Four-legged heroes representing law enforcement agencies from throughout the region will shine Oct. 19 as the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its third annual K9 Unit Challenge and public K9 obstacle course at Fuji Park.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the free public event will highlight dozens of K9s from multiple agencies who will compete in three primary events: patrol apprehension, odor detection, and agility. NDOW was immediately called to assist with the bear, where it was determined that G51 had third-degree burns on his paws and burns on his face and rump as well. The Department refers to this bear as G51 as that is how he is documented in NDOW’s data system.

After caring for the bear since Wednesday, Animal Ark, graciously agreed to rehabilitate G51. NDOW wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Nate LaHue and Dr. Leslie Spears, wildlife veterinarian for the Animal Ark spent the day helping to attend to the bear.

In efforts to keep G51 wild, he will receive as little human contact as possible during treatment and rehabilitation.

“G51 has very serious burns on his paws, and he has a long road to recovery,” said Dr. LeHue. “However, he is a wild bear, and we hope to send him back to the wild.,”

According to Animal Ark’s vet, Dr. Spears, “He will receive a lot of love and attention here. Animal Ark is fabulous. I will follow-up with retreatment visits”.

“We’re grateful for our partners at Animal Ark,” said Nevada Department of Wildlife Director Alan Jenne. “While NDOW manages over 900 species of wildlife in Nevada, we’re simply not set up to handle this type of long-term rehabilitation. It’s reassuring to know this bear will receive the best care available.”

The Department and Animal Ark will continue to give updates of G51 as they become available.

Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary and Nature Center is located 28 miles north of Reno and is a safe haven for injured, abandoned and otherwise non-releasable wild animals who act as ambassadors for their species.

The Davis Fire started at Davis Creek Regional Park in Washoe Valley south of Reno and north of Carson City on Sept. 7 and has burned nearly 6,000 acres.
News Sat, 21 Sep 2024 13:12:30 +0000 Jeff Munson 132520 at https://www.carsonnow.org Capital City Arts Initiative’s Graphics Extraordinaire 2024 exhibit features works by WNC students https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/21/2024/graphics-extraordinaire-2024
<fb:like href="https://www.carsonnow.org/reader-content/09/21/2024/graphics-extraordinaire-2024" send="false" layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="350" action="like" font="arial" colorscheme="light"></fb:like>

by Sharon Rosse

Creativity and talent abound in the Capital City Arts Initiative’s "Graphics Extraordinaire 2024" exhibition that presents graphic design work by seven Western Nevada College students.

The free exhibit is open to the public now through December 5, 2024 in the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Participating students include Will Acuavera, Analisa Bates, Kaitlyn Insell, Kennadee Irving, Amy Rivinius, MJ Vinson, and Madeline Wilson.

Their professor, Jayna Conkey, said, “It’s rewarding to be a teacher when the students respond with mature and exciting work. The students’ creativity was exceptional and each hit a high mark.”

Conkey described her assignments: “The Caslon and Bodoni posters are from a typography assignment given in an intermediate graphic design class (GRC 210 – Type 1). The purpose of this project was to expand creative typography and design approaches while showcasing the history of a typeface. Every font (typeface) on any given computer was designed by someone – probably hundreds of years ago. For this assignment, students were required to choose a typeface then research its history. Next, they created a poster that had to include a biography and image of the type designer as well as a dynamic display of the typeface’s elements (uppercase, lowercase, numerals, glyphs and punctuation).

“The Massimo Vignelli posters were assigned in an advanced graphic design class (GRC 220 – Graphic Design 1). As a tribute to some of the most noted designers in the graphic design field, the students were asked to create a poster showcasing a famous graphic designer. They were required to research designers and, after choosing one, create a poster reflecting the designer’s style – without simply copying their work. While researching, they had to ask themselves what characteristics made that designer’s work so unique – what was their ‘claim to fame?’ An understanding of these ideas helped them create visually interesting designs, echoing the work of Vignelli.”

The infographic designs on Color Theory, The Origins of the Coffee Bean and the Chicken Coop Checklist were designed and drawn by students using Illustration software. Students were required to create and then draw their own graphics (they were not allowed to use clip art).

Sharon Rosse, CCAI Executive Director, said “The Initiative is delighted to present this excellent work — these were demanding assignments. Jayna Conkey’s lessons challenged the students and they definitely rose to the occasion.”

This show is another in CCAI’s ongoing series of student exhibitions in the Brick.

The Capital City Arts Initiative is an artist-centered nonprofit organization committed to community engagement in contemporary visual arts through exhibitions, arts education programs, illustrated talks, artist residencies, and online activities.

The Initiative is funded by the John and Grace Nauman Foundation, Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, Kaplan Family Charitable Fund, Southwest Gas Corporation Foundation, Steele & Associates LLC, and CCAI sponsors and members.

For additional information, please visit CCAI’s website at www.ccainv.org.
Arts and Entertainment CCAI Student Art Exhibition in the Brick Sat, 21 Sep 2024 12:59:24 +0000 132386 at https://www.carsonnow.org
