Carson City area weather: Bundle up as brisk, cold conditions ahead to usher in 2019
A weather front will usher in much colder air around Carson City and Sierra along with brisk northeast winds for the final day of 2018, according to the National Weather Service.
There's a slight chance of snow showers early Monday, before 10 a.m. as the cold air moves into the region. Wind chill values will be in the teens and 20s for most lower elevations during the day Monday, then falling a bit more during the evening before winds diminish overnight.
For Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas, the high temperature Monday will be around 30, with a night time low 11.
For the upper elevations including the Sierra backcountry, expect frigid wind chills below zero and these readings will persist into the morning New Year’s Day. Gusts will approach 100 mph on some Sierra ridges with northeast wind gusts over 40 mph expected to make waters choppy and dangerous on Lake Tahoe.
For New Year’s Day, winds will be lighter lower elevations and gradually subside at upper elevations during the afternoon. However, temperatures will remain quite chilly.
Around the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, the high temperature Tuesday will be around 33 with a night time low of 15. Wednesday and Thursday should warm up some, with day time temperatures in the low to mid 40s.
Be sure to bring the pets indoors and bundle up if venturing outdoors or participating in New Year’s festivities. If traveling through the Sierra, take extra blankets and an emergency kit just in case.
