Firefighters from throughout Lake Tahoe were called early Wednesday morning to a two-alarm fire at Homewood Mountain Resort on the west shore that has caused significant damage and has forced the resort to close during its busiest time of the year.
At approximately 3:02 a.m. North Tahoe Fire Protection District engines responded to a heavily involved structure fire at Homewood Mountain Resort's South Lodge. The call was originally for a commercial fire alarm, according to North Tahoe Fire Protection District. Once resources arrived on scene, a heavily involved structure fire was evident. Further resources were ordered from North Lake Fire Protection District, Truckee Fire, and Squaw Valley Fire.
No injuries have been reported, and fire suppression efforts managed to keep the fire isolated to a single structure.
Fire operations are still in knockdown stage, and numerous resources and apparatus are still on scene. State route Highway 89 is still open at this time, however it is advised to be cautious of apparatus and first responders if you must travel in the area. Tahoe Ski Bowl way is closed at this time.
According to the Homewood Mountain Resort General Manager Kevin Mitchell, the south area of the resort is closed and will remain closed until further notice. Lift operations are also closed at this time.
The following is a news release from North Tahoe and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts issued at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday:
At approximately 3:00 a.m. resources from North Tahoe Fire Protection District and Meeks Bay Fire Protection District responded to a heavily involved structure fire at Homewood Mountain Resort’s South Lodge. The call was originally for a commercial fire alarm. Once resources arrived on scene, a heavily involved structure fire was evident. Further resources were ordered from North Lake Tahoe Fire, Truckee Fire, Squaw Valley Fire, South Lake Tahoe, Lake Valley Fire, and Placer County Sheriff Office. Various mutual aid resources are being released at this time.
No injuries have been reported, and firefighters managed to keep the fire isolated to a single structure. Liberty Utilities has restored power to the area as well.
Firefighters are currently foaming the building in an effort to contain small fire flare ups within the perimeter of the structure. Fire operations are in overhaul stage, one of the final stages of fire suppression.
“We’ve progressively fought fire for the last few hours. It’s been a difficult building due to the size and volume and loading inside of structure” says Battalion Chief Steve McNamara.
Once overhaul is completed, North Tahoe Fire Marshal Chief Conradson and Placer County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an investigation. Until the investigation is complete, no further information on the cause will be released.
Please be cautious when driving in the Homewood area of the west shore of Lake Tahoe. Tahoe Ski Bowl Way is closed at this time, and will remain closed until further notice. Also use caution in the area due to ice on the roadways.
All operations at Homewood Mountain Resort will be closed for the remainder of today. Please contact Guest Services at Homewood Mountain at 530-525-2992 for further updates on Homewood Mountain Resort operations.
