Eagles and Raptors Make Their Return to Carson Valley
Every winter, Carson Valley becomes a nesting ground for bald eagles, golden eagles, falcons, hawks, owls and other wildlife as they congregate to the region. Carson Valley’s expansive open space and cattle ranches provide habitat for the wintering birds of prey.
Meanwhile, the calving season afterbirth provides vital nutrients for these raptors, creating a perfect scenario for these birds of prey to descend to the valley. The phenomenon has been coined Eagles and Agriculture and provides a front row seat to anyone wanting to see these magnificent creatures up close.
This year’s early winter storms have encouraged the Eagle and Agriculture season to start early, meaning wildlife enthusiasts and birders can observe predatory birds in Carson Valley right now through the end of February. The public historic parks and preserves of Dangberg Ranch and River Fork Ranch provide trails, pastures and historic buildings for self-guided tours and up-close wildlife observations.
Visitors will find physically distanced opportunities to photograph wildlife on their own time. Carson Valley offers these tips from local professional photographers on how to capture the best eagle and wild animal photographs.
Additionally, the 19th annual Eagles & Agriculture takes place Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021 to Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021. Participants have an opportunity to observe eagles and other raptors in the field, discover Carson Valley’s rich agricultural history, photograph birds and other wildlife and learn how to identify eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. In order to ensure the health and safety of the attendees, tickets are limited and staggered attendance will be implemented. Face coverings are required.
