Chains, snow tires required over Sierra mountain passes

Snow and lower elevation rain this afternoon is expected to change to snow at all elevations this evening behind a cold front. A period of moderate to heavy snow is expected in the Sierra through early evening, with whiteout conditions possible over the passes, according to the weather service. Lake Tahoe and much of Northern Nevada is under a Winter Weather Advisory.
Snow will end tonight as the front moves into eastern and southern Nevada. Snowfall totals through this evening are forecast to be 6-12 inches over Sierra passes, 3-6 inches around Lake Tahoe (at lake level), and 1 to 3 inches for the valley floors of northeast California and western Nevada, according to the weather service.
