Carson City man jailed after investigation into alleged production of child pornography

A 67-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of production of child pornography, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.

Robbie Wayne Roberts, a Carson City resident, was taken into custody at 10:36 a.m. following an investigation.

According to the booking report, on Nov. 30, 2022 CCSO was contacted by a Roseville (California) Police Department detective who met with a juvenile victim who advised she had been communicating with a male identified with an alias through a chatroom platform. The victim admitted during her interview that she was sending sexually explicit, fully nude pictures and video of herself to the suspect.

The communication was later blocked by parental controls of the victim's cell phone device. The victim was able to continue communications through a chat using her school issued laptop computer. The suspect used a user name to continue the sexually explicit conversation with the victim.

The victim also refers to the suspect's alias in her communication with the suspect on the chat platform. These conversations were preserved on the victim's email account, the report states.

The juvenile came forward to police because the suspect told her personal information she had never shared, such as where she goes to high school, her parents name and her dog's name and breed. The victim reported she became scared when the suspect made a threat to harm her dog if she were to ever "disappear or fall off the face of the earth," according to the report.

The conversation between the victim and suspect are extremely sexually explicit in nature, the report states. The victim does as the suspect instructs and sent videos of sexual acts to the suspect, which depict what the suspect instructed, according to the report.

The suspect continues to engage in sexually explicit conversation with the victim who becomes aware of the suspect's whereabouts. These conversations are time stamped throughout the day of Sept. 15, 2022.

The suspect explains that he lives in Reno, Nev., but that he was currently in Carson City at his girlfriend's parents' home on that date and time. The sexually explicit conversations continue and the suspect continues to tell the victim what he wants the victim to sexually act out for him to see, the report states.

The victim follows these instructions and sends additional sexually explicit photos and videos of herself to the suspect, which depict what the suspect describes he wants to see, the report states.

The suspect sent a photo of himself and his girlfriend, who he identified by name, to the victim. Through the course of this investigation, the suspect was identified as Robbie Wayne Roberts.

Multiple investigative searches related to social media accounts, email accounts, casino player accounts and cell phones provided extensive evidence. The evidence acquired showed matching or similar email addresses, physical addresses and information identifying Robbie Wayne Roberts as the person using the alias, the report states. Further records showed the suspect had recently moved into a Ridgefield Drive residence in Carson City.

With the evidence location, CCSO applied for a search warrant of the residence. On Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 8:46 a.m. Robbie Wayne Roberts and his girlfriend were detained as they were leaving the residence. The search of the residence was carried out in collaboration with Washoe County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Deputies read Roberts and his girlfriend their Miranda rights. Roberts said he did not want to speak and would only speak with an attorney present. The investigating detective explained that he would explain to him the details of the investigation and the search warrant, the report states.

While explaining the investigation regarding the identified juvenile victim, Roberts interrupted and said "I know exactly who you are talking about." Roberts told the detective the victim sought him out and mentioned conversation about meeting in Reno. He told the detective he refused to meet up with her due to her age, the report states.

The detective informed Roberts that he had reviewed the conversations and saw that he continued conversation about the idea of meeting in person. The detective explained that even though it was true he disengaged conversation about meeting with the victim to engage in sexual activities due to her age, he continued to have very explicit conversations with the victim. The detective told Roberts he continued to encourage and receive very explicit video and images from the victim after the fact, the report states.

Through the search of the residence, voluminous items of sexually explicit pornographic images were located on computers, cell phones and electronic devices. A search of the man's laptop showed his social media account with the alias he had used to communicate with the victim, the report states.

Numerous chat rooms were located with the phrase "young girls." Numerous sexually explicit images were located of girls who appeared teenagers, but need further forensic verification to valid child victims, the report states. The sexually explicit video files sent to Roberts from the positively identified juvenile victim were also located on the suspect's laptop.

The detective spoke with the suspect's girlfriend who was determined not to be directly involved with this investigation, the report states.

Roberts was taken into custody for NRS 200.710 suspicion of unlawful use of a minor in producing pornography or as a subject of sexual portrayal in performance as defined as a person who knowingly uses, encourages, entices or permits a minor to simulate or engage or in or assist others to simulate or engage in sexual conduct to produce a performance.

The investigation is ongoing pending complete digital forensic analysis of the electronic devices seized from the residence. Bail: $100,000.
