Carson High School NJROTC raises more than $5,000 in support of Angel Tree

CARSON CITY — The Carson High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program raised more than $5,000 for the local Angel Tree gift program. The number was significantly higher than last year’s total of $3,300. CHS NJROTC has raised money for the charity for the past five years.
The cadets originally chose to adopt 8 children. But after exceeding their original goal of $3,000, they decided to adopt 8 more children, for a total of 16 “angels.”
For three weeks, donations from the cadets would be collected by each platoon (class period). The totals were announced daily, and the cadets got competitive as they attempted to donate more than the other class periods. Many cadets donated $100 or more. The largest donor this year was Cadet Earwicker.
"I'm very proud of all that the cadets have accomplished for Angel Tree this year,” said the program’s Executive Officer Cadet Gerow, who led the donation effort for the 2021-2022 school year. “Not only have we surpassed previous years, but we have nearly doubled our goal. I could hardly believe that we were able to raise 5,000 dollars! As well as this, the turnout of cadets coming to help shop and wrap was exceptional."
Others, such as Cadet Payan, were involved in several aspects of the process, from donating money to buying and wrapping the gifts.
“It was so great to be able to help families in need this year,” Payan said. “Supporting our community in this way has been a wonderful experience.”
Dan Meyer, LCDR (Lieutenant Commander Retired) U.S. Navy, noted that the money cadets donated was of their own.
“We did have a couple of the cadet families help with a donation, which was great,” Meyer said. “We are also grateful to Walmart as they supported our efforts by giving a discount for the Angel Tree gifts. They, like the cadets, were excited to give back to the community and help out those in need.”
