Carson City Clerk/Recorder won't seek re-election; offers insight into elections, the position and more
Aubrey Rowlatt has been Carson City’s Clerk/Recorder for the past four years, and has been in charge of all local, state and federal elections taking place in Carson City. Other duties include issuing marriage licenses, facilitating all public records requests within the city, and much more.
Her four-year term will be finishing in 2022, and she has chosen not to run for re-election. Rowlatt took the time to discuss her time spent as Clerk/Recorder, what characteristics the next Clerk/Recorder should have, and what’s next for her.
Rowlatt has been involved in elections, from volunteering to administrating, for 12 years. She was the Chief Deputy Clerk of Elections for four years prior to being elected as Clerk/Recorder.
“I chose to run because my employment background was a good fit for the office, encompassing an understanding of the wide range of responsibilities held by the Clerk/Recorder,” said Rowlatt.
Some of the duties that the Clerk/Recorder undertakes, according to Rowlatt, are:
* administrates all local, state and federal elections within Carson City
* issues marriage licenses and files notary bonds
* records documents for permanent document retention
* is the Ex Officio Public Administrator for Carson City
* facilitates and tracks all public records requests submitted to the City
* serves as Clerk to the Board of Supervisors and multiple other boards and commissions within the City
“The Clerk/Recorder plays a large part in the City,” said Rowlatt. “This office has several internal departments that are public facing and interact closely with other departments, boards and commissions.”
The biggest lesson Rowlatt is taking away from her time as the Clerk/Recorder is a deep appreciation of her team.
“I am taking away pride in the office and in my staff,” said Rowlatt. “I have watched each member of my staff grow and gain confidence in their respective fields. When we started this term, many staff members were new to their duties and they all stepped up and created a true ‘team’ environment.”
As far as the new Clerk/Recorder goes, Rowlatt says there are several qualifications that should be met to fit the bill, including being conscientious and being someone who has an understanding of current election laws, knowledge of recordation of documents and document retention, knowledge of estate administration and understanding Nevada’s open meeting laws.
“I will be pursuing other avenues within the community and hope to continue to make a positive difference,” said Rowlatt. “This was a very difficult decision to make. I want to thank Carson City for the opportunity to learn from the community as well as serve the community these last four years.”
