Carson City Sheriff's arrest log: Inmates charged with battery of another prisoner

A pair of Carson City Detention Center inmates were charged with felony battery by prisoner Friday afternoon at 12:40 p.m. at the Carson City Jail after video surveillance footage showed one inmate getting jumped by two others in a cell, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

Duffy Thomas, 28, of Carson City and 28 year-old transient, Jacob Madden, were arrested at the jail after Sheriff's deputies responded to a physical altercation between inmates.

Two inmates were found on top of a third inmate at the bottom of the pile. All three were instructed to get off each other and they complied. The bottom inmate was escorted out of the cell to separate him from the other two. On the way, he told a deputy that the two other inmates had jumped him, the arrest report said.

The victim reported that he had gone to his cell to get a score sheet for a card game when he noticed Madden following him, the report said. When the victim asked Madden what he was doing, the latter threw his arms up and moved in a threatening manner toward the victim.

Madden reportedly took the victim to the floor, the report said, proceeding to hit him in the face and mid-section. The victim also reported that Thomas had grabbed his legs to assist Madden.

On observation, the victim exhibited visible injuries to his face and right side.

Madden exercised his Miranda rights and declined to answer questions, the report said, while Thomas told deputies he had gone into the cell to stop the altercation.

Video surveillance footage showed Madde and the victim playing cards at a table. The victim was shown getting up from the table and proceeding to his cell. Madden was shown following him and partially closing the cell door upon entry, the report said.

Thomas was shown arriving later and closing the cell door behind him.

The charges were added to both inmates. Bail for each: $20,000.

In other arrests:

— A 30 year-old Carson City man was arrested late Friday night at 11:47 p.m. in the area of Roop Street and Winnie Lane for misdemeanor second-offense driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and reckless driving, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

According to the arrest report, a traffic stop was made on the suspect's vehicle after it was observed turning without a signal, failing to maintain and driving at excess speed.

Upon making contact with the driver, Sheriff's deputies observed thick, slurred speech and red, watery eyes along with an alcoholic odor emitting from the driver, the report said.

The driver complied when asked to exit the vehicle and consented to standard field sobriety tests (SFSTs), which showed signs of impairment, as well as a preliminary breath test (PBT) that yielded breath-alcohol content (BAC) of .220 percent.

The suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody at that point, transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $3,356.

— A 38 year-old Reno man was arrested late Friday night at 11:07 p.m. in the 4500 block of N. Carson Street for misdemeanor first-offense DUI, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

According to the arrest report, a Sheriff's deputy was responding to a report of a drunk driver at N. Carson Street and the northbound Interstate 580 on-ramp.

The officer met with the reporting party (RP), who waited for law enforcement arrive after observing the suspect vehicle pull into a parking lot.

Per the RP, the suspect vehicle abruptly stomped on the northbound I-580 on-ramp, then made a U-turn and began driving southbound while still in the northbound lanes. The RP reported he has to swerve to avoid getting hit by the suspect vehicle.

The deputy located the suspect vehicle, a silver sedan, in a parking lot and made contact with the driver, who was observed still seated in the driver's seat and slumped forward, the report said.

The suspect driver identified himself, but did not have his driver's license with him. He told the deputy that he was tired, his wife had left him, and he parked to figure out where he was at.

The suspect displayed red, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, the report said.

He became verbally uncooperative when the deputy informed him he had been reported as a drunk driver and he refused to consent to either SFSTs or a PBT.

The suspect stepped out of the vehicle when asked, but he was yelling and becoming increasingly agitated. The deputy detained him in handcuffs as a result, the report said.

He was taken into custody at that point and transported to the Carson City Jail. Along the way, the suspect was yelling about being taken to the Washoe County Jail.

When the deputy queried him about where he was, the suspect stated he was in Washoe County.

A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw at the jail and the suspect was booked for DUI. Bail: $1,194.

According to the arrest report, a Sheriff's deputy was dispatched for a warrant service to the suspect's place of work. The deputy made contact with the suspect, who identified himself.

A records check through Carson City Dispatch confirmed the active arrest warrant for felony possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, the report said.

He was handcuffed and taken into custody at that point, transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $25,000.

— A 58 year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday afternoon at 1:28 p.m. at the intersection of Corbett and Roop streets on an outstanding misdemeanor contempt of warrant issued by the Carson City Justice Court, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

According to the arrest report, a Sheriff's deputy was dispatched to the area on report of a suspicious subject looking into parked vehicles. The suspect was reported to be carrying a woman's purse and dressed in black and grey.

Upon arrival, the deputy spotted a subject matching the suspect's description and made contact with him.

The suspect identified himself, but denied looking into parked vehicles. The reported purse was actually a pair of large snow gloves.

A records check through Carson City Dispatch showed an active arrest warrant for misdemeanor contempt and the suspect was taken into custody at that point, the report said.

He was transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $287.
