What Works: How do Ask for Help
If there is one lesson that 2019 has taught me, it’s that I can’t do it alone. I can’t generate business alone. I can’t work myself through that tough day alone. I can’t do my life alone. Life and business require support. Yet, so many people are afraid to ask for help. They see it as a burden that they have a need. Or, like me, they are just too stubborn to reach out for fear of looking weak or incapable.
It’s better to ask the question and reach for the light than to sit in the dark and wonder where the light switch is. Yet, that’s what so many of us do. The culture of “I’ve got this” or “Don’t ask dumb questions” has us by the neurons. Our brains get loud.
I should be able to do this alone.
If I ask, I will look stupid.
I am such a burden with my problems.
Yet, without asking the questions, without asking for help, without realizing that WE is a part of living - the prophecy is fulfilled.
It’s time to flip the script. Whoever told you that radical self-reliance meant you should never ask for help, kindly tell that part of your experience that it doesn’t merit the right to run your life anymore.
Here are some ways to self-communicate to self-advocate.
It’s ok if I can’t handle all of this. Who might enjoy helping me on this project?
I don’t know the answer and that’s ok. Who might enjoy telling me the answer?
I know I have a lot going on. Who would be a healthy person to connect with right now?
Here’s the key to the kingdom to get the help you need.
Connect by focusing on the SOLUTION and not the PROBLEM. If you are constantly connecting on the problem, it is heavy. But if you truly want a solution, it’s much easier to look to those who would enjoy sleuthing with you and helping you solve problems.
Some problems may seem insurmountable. They aren’t. It’s your self-communication that is the real mountain to climb.
What mountains are you climbing right now? If it’s a business or leadership problem you are facing, maybe I can help. All you have to do is ask the question. Post below or repost this to social media as a conversation starter. Use it to ask for a solution, if you need one. The floor is yours, Carson City.
