Carson City awarded historic marker commemorating Women’s Suffrage in Nevada
Carson City was awarded a historic landmark suffrage marker honoring Felice Cohn, a Carson City native who made significant contributions to women’s rights in Nevada. The unveiling of the historic landmark is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2019 at 1 p.m. The landmark will be unveiled in front of the Legislature, adjacent to Carson St. near the crosswalk to McFadden Plaza, previously known as 3rd St.
On June 6, 2019, the Carson City Board of Supervisors authorized the Mayor to sign a letter of intent to William G. Pomeroy Foundation and the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites (NCWHS) stating the acceptance of the gift on behalf of the citizens of Carson City. The NCWHS and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation have partnered to place historic markers in each state and territory of the US. The markers recognize significant events and people in the suffrage campaign. The historic markers project emerged from the National Votes for Women Trail, a project of the NCWHS.
Felice Cohn was a member of Nevada’s Equal Franchise Society and wrote the draft legislation that was passed by the Nevada legislature. Others being memorialized throughout Nevada include Marjorie Brown whose work with the state organization succeeded in gaining support in the middle of the state, President Delphine Squires who brought national and state suffrage speakers to the southern part of the state during the height of the campaign, and Anne Martin who organized the successful campaign, 1912-1914. You can read more about Felice Cohn here.
The first installation of a suffrage marker took place November 22, 2019 at the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah, honoring Marjorie Brown. Additional historic landmark suffrage markers will be placed in Battle Mountain (site of the first convention in 1870 to organize woman suffrage in the state), Las Vegas (the Mesquite), and Reno (the state headquarters of the Nevada Equal Franchise Society). Visit www.ncwhs.org for dates and schedules for landmark suffrage marker unveilings.
All are encouraged to join State and City Officials in celebrating Nevada’s history and honoring those whose efforts provided great strides in women’s rights.
