Carson City Rotarians to Learn the History of the Sutro Tunnel
The Sutro Tunnel in Dayton played a major role in our area’s mining history, and yet many people know nothing about it.
That could change at the Rotary Club of Carson City’s meeting on Tuesday November 30th.
Chris Pattison, Project Manager with Friends of the Sutro Tunnel will give a presentation and explain how the tunnel was designed to drain the water from the mines into Dayton.
“This tunnel, which was completed in 1979, was the very first of its kind in the United States and still operates for its original purpose as drainage. It was designed to save the mining companies money in pumping and transportation costs.”, Pattison said. “I’m hoping as a community we can work together to preserve the site for future generations and as a point of interest in Nevada.”
The public is invited to attend the meeting and Pattison hopes to encourage people to take an active interest in the tunnel.
“As public awareness increases people are becoming increasingly more interested in the site, the tunnel and helping our efforts.”
