Homestead Holidays returns to Carson City this year, bringing bushels of country charm

The first Homestead Holidays quietly began at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City, bringing a free, community event to the capital city, laden with old-fashioned Christmas charm.

Now, the crowdfavorite holiday event has grown, with new events and entertaiment being added each year!

Here are some of the offerings you can expect this year:

Photos with Santa
Take a photo with Santa inside the historic Red House. Visiting Santa is free and you can take your own pictures.

Letters to Santa
Check out the 2022 Carson City Holiday Guide for a letter template or bring you own. Don’t forget to drop off your letter in our mailbox with direct delivery to the North Pole. Some letters may even be published in Carson Now!

Christmas Craft Market
Local vendors and crafters will have their holiday wares available for sale, located in the stables by the parking area.

Lights and Decorations
Over 2 miles of lights decorate the historic ranch buildings, fence lines, and trees.

Children’s Storytime
The Carson City Library will read holiday related stories from the main stage each evening around 6:30pm. Grab some food, hot apple cider, and sit on a hay bale while listening to a holiday story.

Wagon Rides
The Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch will be running mule driven wagon rides. Christmas lights will light up the path. Learn about the History of Silver Saddle Ranch. Donations to the Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch are appreciated.

Trees for Charity
Fresh Christmas trees are donated by the National Forest Service which local businesses have sponsored by decorating them and filling them with gifts. Look for the box next to each tree to place raffles and find a list of included gifts. Raffles will be sold for $5 a piece or 5 for $25. All proceeds support the For Kids Foundation. Raffles will be sold at a table by the Red House and at the drink tent.

Food and Drink
Stay warm with hot food from various food vendors and stop by our drink tent with festive hot drinks for both kids and adults to enjoy.

Live Music
Each night bands will perform holiday favorites from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Pet Adoption
Take a break from the cold and visit with some new furry friends who are available for adoption, and if you fall in love, take one home! The Nevada Humane Society will be on site in their adoption bus with animals available for adoption.

Homestead Holidays takes place this year from Dec. 9 - 11, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City.

There has been a recent rise in phone and video scams involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers.

Scammers are using phone calls and FaceTime video calls to contact citizens, posing as officers or deputies from various agencies to steal personal information or extort money.

On Thursday, Supervisors heard an update from Rob Boehmer, chair of the Carson City Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife, who presented on the annual urban wildlife report.

UPDATE 11 a.m.: Our Slide Mountain Hand Crew, in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service - Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and air support, is actively working to contain the fire.
The tree struck by lightning has been felled, and the crew is cutting line around the fire perimeter. Upon further assessment, the fire is now estimated to cover 100’ x 20’.

Incline Village, NV – The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) is responding to a lightning-caused fire in the First Creek area. The fire was reported at approximately 10 p.m. on September 18th and is estimated to cover an area of 100’ x 100’.

Before considerable scientific research by Western Nevada College Professor of Geosciences Dr. Winnie Kortemeier, it was understood that Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, was created during the Pleistocene era, also known as the Ice Age, roughly 10,000 to 2.6 million years ago.

Through her radiometric dating of rocks and examining the basalt that has interacted with the water of Lake Tahoe, Dr. Kortemeier has determined that the lake is 2.3 million years old.

CVTA's Run the Valley 5K

King St in Carson City. Doors open at 5:30 pm.
