NHP releases more details, photos of deadly Nov. 9 crash in south Carson City

On Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at approximately 12:47 p.m., Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to an injury crash involving several vehicles on US-50 at the intersection with South Carson Street in Carson City.

Preliminary investigation shows that a white 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup towing a 44-foot yacht was traveling east on US-50. The Ford F-350 failed to obey a red traffic light and entered the intersection with South Carson Street. The driver of the Ford F-350 was experiencing extreme brake failure traveling down the grade as the payload was approximately 37,000 lbs. (the Ford F-350 was rated at a max payload of 21,000 pounds.)

A silver 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup was traveling south on South Carson Street in the intersection with US- 50 and entered the path of the Ford F-350. The front of the Ford F-350 struck the right side of the GMC Sierra. The Ford F-350 rotated clockwise and separated from the yacht trailer. The yacht trailer continued east through the intersection.

A white 2013 Mercedes Benz GL-Class SUV and a silver 2005 Nissan Xterra SUV were traveling north on South Carson Street in the intersection with US-50. The tongue of the yacht trailer entered the path of the Mercedes Benz. The driver of the Mercedes Benz drove over the tongue of the yacht trailer and the Mercedes Benz burst into flames. The yacht trailer continued east and struck the left side of the Nissan Xterra. The Nissan Xterra rotated clockwise and overturned. Several other vehicles were involved in this crash resulting in minor injuries.

Two passengers from the GMC Sierra (Tana Powell, a 70-year-old Dayton resident and Don Powell, a 74-year- old Dayton resident) ultimately succumbed to their injuries sustained in the crash. A victim from the Nissan Xterra is still in critical condition at an area hospital.

The driver of the Ford F-350, Roney Gonzalez Otazo, is currently in custody at the Carson City Jail. Impairment is not suspected.

This crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol Division’s Northern Command West Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.) - Case #211100660.

SPARKS, Nev. — The Nevada Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Laboratory has confirmed seven positive rabies cases in bats in Clark and Washoe Counties. Rabies is most commonly found in bats, and bat activity tends to peak between the months of May and October throughout Nevada.

The Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation was made aware of positive COVID-19 case in the Las Vegas unemployment insurance call center on Saturday, July 11.

Upon learning of the positive result, the call center was immediately closed and remediation efforts began as set forth by state and CDC protocols. The employee is self-quarantined, and there is no immediate exposure risk to the public as the facility has been closed to the public since mid-March.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday afternoon to a laundry room fire in the 1100 block of Genoa Lane in north Carson City.

The fire was called in at around 12:30 p.m. as a structure fire inside a residence. A battalion chief on scene reports the small fire was from a clothing drier that was extinguished by the time they arrived.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management reports Sunday that the Number Fire, which started Monday night 10 miles southeast of Gardnerville, is 88 percent contained and has burned approximately 18,342 acres.

Critical fire weather conditions are expected Sunday afternoon across Carson City and much of the Sierra Front region with the worst conditions likely for locations north of Highway 50 in western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 12,484 for the week ending July 4, up 1,374 claims, or 12.4 percent, compared to last week’s total of 11,110. This is the second consecutive week of increases in regular initial claims.

Through the week ending July 4, there have been 562,486 initial claims filed in 2020, 540,834 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.
