NDOW biologists seek public's help tracking moose populations in Nevada
Last week they Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) posted a video of a moose spotted walking through sagebrush in Wells, NV.
The video reached more than 277,220 people, was shared more than 3,350 times and viewed 180,000 times. These numbers are big for us!
More importantly, NDOW started receiving Facebook messages from people sharing pictures and videos of moose sightings around the state.
People may not realize it, but this is valuable information for NDOW biologists, since moose populations are so hard to track! Moose do call the Silver State home, but we don’t have large populations of them, and NDOW biologists have very little data.
The messages we received inspired us to start a “citizens science” project. NDOW biologists need the public’s help!
We are asking anyone who has spotted a moose in Nevada to tag us in their pictures and/or videos on Facebook. Also, send us a Facebook message with the pictures or videos, the location (if possible, the GPS coordinates) and date of the sighting.
Those who don’t have Facebook can email us at ndowinfo@ndow.org, but we prefer Facebook messages.
Each week, NDOW Staff Conservation Educator Coordinator Aaron Keller and NDOW Public Information Officer Ashley Sanchez will be meeting with NDOW biologists to share the information received.
NDOW biologists believe this information will help them better understand and track moose populations in Nevada.
