Annual community Thanksgiving dinner today at Carson City Plaza Event Center
More than 900 pounds of turkey will be served during the 65th annual Carson City Community Thanksgiving Feast at the Carson City Plaza Events Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
All are welcome to attend the free event. Thanksgiving staples including turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing as well as cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie will be served in the events center banquet hall. The Carson City Events Center is located at 211 E. 9th St., in Carson City.
Although this year’s meal will not be held at the Carson Nugget as it was the past 64 years, the event will once again offer community members a chance to enjoy a meal with Thanksgiving staples as has been the tradition for many years.
Made possible by Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, the event is also made possible by help from Nevada Nosh, A Catered Affaire, Busboy Mobile Cuisine and Calvary Chapel Carson City.
“We’re continuing the Thanksgiving feast the Nugget started decades ago,” said Jim Peckham, the Executive Director of FISH. “We’re providing a place for people to come and be a part of a community when they may not have family or resources to create a meal of their own,” he said.
Last year, FISH served 1,200 Thanksgiving meals to members of the community, including seniors, families and veterans. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, they also give out food baskets.
Donations of Thanksgiving items such as canned cranberries, gravy and yams are helpful right now, said Peckham.
In addition to food items, donations and volunteers are always needed at FISH. Please call 775-882-3474, if able to help.
