Carson City man with hammer in waistband jailed for robbery at phone store, burglary at casino
A 53-year-old man was arrested Sunday for felony attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary and other charges after allegedly stealing cash from a casino money drawer and robbing a phone store, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.
David Shannon Jones was arrested 3:45 p.m. in the area of Winnie Lane and North Carson Streets minutes after a reported robbery happened at Metro PCS phone store in the 1900 block of North Carson Street. He also faces a felony parole and probation violation and misdemeanor destruction of property.
According to the arrest report, deputies were given a description of the suspect, wearing all black and a black baseball cap. While driving down North Carson and West Winnie streets a deputy observed a man matching the description, later identified as David Shannon Jones. The deputy observed a red bandana around the man’s neck and asked dispatch if the suspect had a red bandana. Dispatch confirmed the suspect did.
The deputy turned around and attempted to stop Jones as he was walking down Winnie Lane. He was detained and searched. In the man’s front waistband was a black plastic bag that contained a hammer inside of it. The man was positively identified as the suspect who robbed the phone store.
Deputies also learned the man had been at Woody’s Casino nearby earlier and had gone behind the counter, breaking the money drawer and stealing $336 in cash and loose change. Deputies located the amount taken from the casino in the man’s front left pocket. Security video from the store shows Jones going into the bathroom, and coming out with a bandana over his face. It also showed him go up to the money drawer, pull it open and then take money out of it.
With the robbery at Metro PCS, the suspect had been in the store, looked and then began asking for money. When the clerk said there wasn’t money, the man lifted his shirt, showing a black plastic bag and what was believed to be a gun inside. Jones again asked for money and began to go through cabinet and drawers in the store. The suspect was told the store only has debit in the store. The man walked out and stated he was going to kill them, the arrest report states.
At jail he was read his Miranda warning and was asked if he was willing to speak. Jones said he did not want to speak to anyone without his lawyer. Gloves, a red bandana, hammer and black bag were booked into evidence. Bail: $40,500.
