WNC launches new diversity program Wednesday; Nevada System of Higher Education administrator to keynote
Western Nevada College will launch its newest student diversity program on Wednesday evening at the Carson City campus.
The new program, Continuing the Legacy of African American Student Success, is designed for students to be successful and graduate with degrees for WNC, according to College President Dr. Vincent Solis, in a Nov. 4 letter to students.
Over the last several years, the college has been working to develop student success programs that aid in students completing their educational goals. One of these programs that has been extremely successful is the Latino Cohort, said Dr. Solis.
The students in this program get specialized services that guide students to success. As a result, the students who participate in the program have some of the highest graduation rates on campus, said Dr. Solis.
Now that WNC has developed a working model that shows marked increase in success rates in students, the college is expanding its program offerings to include a similar program for African American students, said Dr. Solis.
The new program will provide the following for participants:
— A one-stop-shop for advising, questions, scholarship information, etc.
— There will be an assigned mentor to work with he group.
— There will be monthly group meetings with local personalities where students can engage and interact with community leaders and create meaningful relationships that go beyond WNC
— The program will also offer academic coaching to help address any academic and personal challenges.
The program launch will feature keynote speaker, Zelalem T. Bogale, who serves as Deputy General Counsel for System Administration at the Nevada System of Higher Education and is an adjunct professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he teaches courses on race, law and criminal justice.
The first meeting of the program is Wednesday, Nov. 13, 6 p.m. at Carson Nugget Hall, located in the Aspen Building of the WNC Carson City campus. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the event to learn more about the CLAASS program. Refreshments will be provided. If possible, RSVP at 775-445-3215.
