NHP update: 2nd fatality confirmed in fiery south Carson City crash involving 8 vehicles

UPDATE 4:45PM: The Nevada Highway Patrol confirms a second fatality in Tuesday afternoon's crash involving 8 vehicles at the intersection of I-580, South Carson Street, Highway 50.

UPDATE 2:38PM: NHP says a preliminary investigation shows that a Ford F-350 pickup towing a large boat in the eastbound lane failed to obey a red traffic light which caused the fatal multi-vehicle crash. Eight vehicles were involved in the crash, four people were critically injured and three people were taken by Care Flight. The intersection is closed. Motorists should use an alternate route.

UPDATE: The Nevada Highway Patrol has confirmed at least one fatality in the fiery crash at the intersection of I-580, South Carson Street and Highway 50. As of around 1:30 p.m. a Carson City Fire Department Battalion chief said there were three critically injured, two seriously injured, two with moderate injuries and one with minor injuries. It is unknown at this time if there are more patients.
NHP crash investigators are on scene. Motorists are advised to stay clear of the area and find alternative routes.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday afternoon to a crash involving multiple vehicles in the area of Highway 50, 395 and I-580, Spooner Junction.
The crash, reported at around 12:50 p.m. involves as many as six vehicles, possibly seven, with at least two vehicle fires, according to Carson City dispatchers.
Four Care Flight air ambulances as well as ground ambulances, were ordered, with multiple people suffering serious injuries. A coroner has been called to the scene.
Three people had to be extricated from vehicles, two of whom were critically injured, according to first responders on scene.
Multiple paramedics were on the scene treating several crash victims.
All traffic on I-580 near the junction of Highway 50 is being rerouted. Motorists should stay out of the area.
Multiple emergency units have responded to the scene, including from Douglas County, and the Nevada Highway Patrol.
